Parshuram word meaning:

Parashuram is made up of two words. Parashu means “axe” and “Ram” . Combining these two words gives the meaning “Ram with axe” . Just like Ram is an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, Parashuram is also an incarnation of Vishnu. Therefore, Parashuram is also considered as powerful as Vishnuji and Ramji.

Parashurama has many names. He is also known as Rambhadra, Bhargava, Bhrigupati, Bhriguvanshi (descendant of sage Bhrigu), Jamadagni (son of Jamadagni).

Who was Parshuram?

Parashurama was the fifth son of Rishi Jamadagni and Renuka. Rishi Jamadagni was one of the seven sages.

Parashuram was a living example of bravery.

In Hinduism, there is a belief about Parashuram that he is immortal since Treta Yuga and Dwapar Yuga.

Lord Parshuram Astra:

Parashuram's main weapon is considered to be "axe" . It is also called Farsa, Parashu. Parashuram was born in a Brahmin family, but he was more interested in war etc. That is why his ancestors Chyavana, Bhrigu ordered him to do penance of Lord Shiva. By the order of his ancestors, Parashuram did penance of Lord Shiva and pleased him. Lord Shiva asked him to ask for a boon. Then Parashuram folded his hands and prayed to Lord Shiva and asked for a divine weapon and the art of being proficient in war. Lord Shiva ordered Parashuram to go on a pilgrimage to master the art of war. Then Parashuram did a tough and severe penance of Lord Shiva on the Mahendra mountain of Mahendragiri in Odisha.

Once again, Lord Shiva was pleased with his penance. He gave a boon to Parashuram and said that Parashuram was born to destroy the demons on earth. That is why Lord Shiva gave Parashuram the boon of being able to kill all the enemies of the gods, demons, monsters and devils.

Parashuram was an expert in the art of war. Scholars and scholars who believe in Hinduism say that among the people living on earth, only Parashuram and Ravana's son Indrajit had the most dangerous, unique and powerful weapons - Brahmanda Astra, Vaishnav Astra and Pashupat Astra.

Parashuram was a devotee of Lord Shiva. He learnt the most difficult martial art "Kalaripayattu" from Lord Shiva. By the grace of Lord Shiva, he also received divine weapons of many gods.

“Vijaya” was his bow and arrow, which was given to him by Lord Shiva.

According to Varaha Purana, by fasting on this day and worshipping Parashuram, one gets the opportunity to become a king in the next birth.

Parshuram story

Devotion to parents, for which he killed his mother:

Parashuram was a living example of bravery. He was completely devoted to his parents. Once Parashuram's father, sage Jamadagni got angry with his wife Renuka. Renuka once went to the river bank to fill water with an earthen pot, but due to the arrival of some gods on the river bank, she got delayed in returning to the ashram. Sage Jamadagni, with his powers, found out the reason for Renuka's late arrival and became very angry with her. In anger, he called all his sons and ordered them to kill their mother. But the sage's four sons Vasu, Visva Vasu, Brihudhyanu, Brutvaknav, expressing love for their mother, refused to obey their father's order. Due to this, sage Jamadagni, in anger, cursed all his sons to turn into stones. After this, sage Jamadagni ordered Parashuram to kill his mother. Following his father's command, Parashuram picked up his weapon, the axe, and bowing his head at his feet, immediately killed his mother Renuka. Jamdagni was pleased with his son and asked Parashuram to ask for a boon of his choice. Parashuram very cleverly and wisely asked for the boon of bringing his mother Renuka and his brothers back to life out of love for them. His father fulfilled his wish and gave new life to his wife Renuka and his four sons. Sage Jamdagni was very pleased with his son Parashuram. Parashuram set an example of his love and dedication towards his parents.

Oath to destroy the Kshatriyas:

Once the king of Kshatriyas on earth, Kartavirya Sahasrajuna killed Parshuram's father, sage Jamadagni and his Kamdhenu cow. This made Parshuram very angry and in anger, Parshuram took an oath to kill all the Kshatriyas and free the whole earth from the dictatorship of Kshatriya kings. When all the Kshatriyas on earth heard this oath, they started leaving the earth and running away. There was no Kshatriya left to protect the earth. Therefore, sage Kashyap ordered Parshuram to leave the earth. Following the orders of sage Kashyap, Parshuram went to live on the Mahendra mountain of Mahendragiri. He did penance there for many years. From then till today, Mahendragiri is considered to be the abode of Parshuram. Mahendragiri is located in Gajapati district of Odisha.

How did Parshuram die?

During the end of the Vedic period, Parashurama became a hermit from a warrior. He started his penance at many places. His presence is still believed to be in Mahendragiri of Orissa. Along with the famous saints Vyas, Kripa, Ashwatthama in the Puranas, Parashurama is also worshipped as a sage in Kaliyug. He is counted as the eighth human king and one of the Saptarishis. He is immortal and never died.
