Buying a diesel generator is an important decision for businesses, industries, offices, hospitals, construction sites, and commercial facilities. A generator is a long-term investment, so choosing the right model and supplier is just as important as checking the price.

Many buyers focus mainly on generator capacity and cost. However, there are several other factors that can affect performance, reliability, maintenance, and ownership costs.

questions to ask a generator dealerBefore purchasing, asking the right can help you understand exactly what you are buying and whether the generator is suitable for your application.

Here are 10 important questions to ask before finalizing your generator purchase.

1. What Generator Capacity Do I Need?

The first question should be about the required generator capacity.

Generator capacity is commonly expressed in kVA. The correct size depends on the total electrical load, starting loads, equipment type, and whether the generator will be used for standby or prime power.

A generator that is too small may become overloaded, while an unnecessarily large generator can increase fuel and operating costs.

Ask the dealer to calculate or confirm the recommended capacity based on your actual load requirements.

2. Which Generator Brand and Model Do You Recommend?

Ask the dealer which brand and model is suitable for your application and why.

A reliable dealer should be able to explain:

Engine specifications
Alternator specifications
Rated power
Fuel consumption
Operating speed
Control panel features
Available service support
Recommended applications

Don't choose a generator simply because the brand is popular. The model should also match your power requirements and operating conditions.

3. Is the Generator New or Used?

If you are considering a used or refurbished generator, clearly ask about its condition.

For a used generator, ask for information such as:

Manufacturing year
Total operating hours
Maintenance history
Previous application
Major repairs
Engine condition
Alternator condition
Battery condition
Load-test results

If you are buying a used generator, a proper inspection is essential before making the payment.

4. What Is the Generator's Fuel Consumption?

Fuel cost can become a significant part of the total operating cost of a diesel generator.

Ask the dealer about expected fuel consumption at different load levels, such as 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%.

Actual fuel consumption can vary depending on the engine, load, operating conditions, maintenance, and other factors. Therefore, use the manufacturer's specifications as a reference and avoid relying only on general estimates.

Understanding fuel consumption helps you compare different generator models more effectively.

5. What Warranty Is Included?

Warranty coverage is an important point that should never be ignored.

Ask the dealer:

How long is the warranty?
What components are covered?
What conditions can affect warranty coverage?
Are labour charges included?
Are replacement parts covered?
Where can warranty service be obtained?

Get the warranty terms in writing instead of relying only on verbal promises.

A clear warranty can provide additional confidence when purchasing a high-value piece of equipment.

6. Do You Provide Installation and Commissioning?

Buying the generator is only one part of the process. Proper installation is also important for safe and reliable operation.

Ask whether the dealer provides installation and commissioning support.

Installation may involve:

Generator positioning
Electrical connections
Earthing
Fuel-system connections
Exhaust arrangements
Ventilation
Control-panel connections
Testing and commissioning

The exact requirements depend on the generator and site conditions.

Professional installation can help prevent problems caused by incorrect connections or unsuitable installation conditions.

7. What After-Sales Service Do You Provide?

questions to ask a generator dealerOne of the most important is about after-sales support.

A generator may operate reliably for years, but it still requires periodic servicing and occasional repairs.

Ask the dealer:

Do you provide maintenance services?
Is technical support available?
How quickly can technicians respond?
Do you provide emergency breakdown support?
Are spare parts readily available?
Do you offer annual maintenance contracts?

A dealer with reliable after-sales support can be more valuable than a supplier offering only a lower purchase price.

8. What Maintenance Does the Generator Require?

Ask the dealer about the recommended maintenance schedule before purchasing.

diesel generator maintenanceRegular may include:

Engine oil replacement
Oil-filter replacement
Fuel-filter inspection or replacement
Air-filter maintenance
Coolant checks
Battery inspection
Belt and hose inspection
Alternator checks
Control-panel inspection
Exhaust-system inspection

Maintenance requirements can vary between models, so ask the dealer for the manufacturer's recommended service schedule.

9. Are Spare Parts Easily Available?

Spare-parts availability can have a major effect on generator downtime.

Ask the dealer whether genuine or recommended replacement parts are available for the generator.

Important parts may include:

Filters
Belts
Hoses
Batteries
Sensors
Engine components
Electrical components
Control-panel parts

If a critical component is difficult to obtain, even a minor failure could keep the generator unavailable for an extended period.

Before buying, ask about typical spare-parts availability and expected delivery times.

10. What Is the Total Cost of Ownership?

The purchase price is not the only cost associated with a generator.

Ask the dealer to help you understand the overall cost, including:

Purchase price
Installation
Fuel consumption
Routine servicing
Spare parts
Repairs
Battery replacement
AMC or service contracts
Transportation
Other site-related costs

A generator with a lower purchase price may not always be the cheapest option over several years.

Comparing total ownership costs can help you make a more informed buying decision.

Why Choosing the Right Diesel Generator Dealer Matters

diesel generator dealerChoosing the right can make the purchasing process much easier.

A professional dealer should be able to provide clear information about the generator's specifications, installation requirements, warranty, maintenance, spare parts, and service support.

A good dealer should also ask questions about your application rather than simply recommending the most expensive or largest generator.

For example, they may ask about:

Your connected electrical load
Starting loads
Operating hours
Standby or prime-power requirements
Site conditions
Equipment being powered
Installation location
Future power requirements

This information helps the dealer recommend a more suitable solution.

What Documents Should You Ask the Dealer For?

Before completing the purchase, ask for the relevant documentation.

Depending on the generator, this may include:

Technical specification sheet
Warranty documents
User manual
Maintenance schedule
Installation instructions
Test reports
Invoice and purchase documents
Service information

For used generators, maintenance records and previous service documentation can be particularly useful.

Keeping these documents can also make future maintenance and troubleshooting easier.

Should You Compare Multiple Generator Dealers?

Yes. Comparing multiple dealers can help you understand the market and identify differences in pricing, specifications, warranty, and service support.

Don't compare only the quoted price.

Instead, compare:

Factor	What to Check
Generator	Brand, model and capacity
Price	Complete purchase cost
Warranty	Duration and coverage
Installation	Included or additional
Service	Availability and response
Spare parts	Availability and cost
Maintenance	Service schedule
AMC	Coverage and charges
Documentation	Manuals and test reports
Support	Technical and breakdown assistance

This approach gives you a clearer picture of the actual value offered by each dealer.
