Quartz is a brilliant all-rounder, but it is not the only option, and for some kitchens it is not even the best one. Maybe you want something with more natural character, maybe your budget will not stretch to premium quartz, or maybe you simply prefer the way a different stone catches the light. Here are five genuine alternatives to quartz worth considering before you commit.

1. Marble Kitchen Worktops: The Classic Choice for Character

Nothing quite matches the look of real marble kitchen worktops. The veining is unique to every slab, so no two kitchens ever look identical. Marble is softer than quartz, which means it is more prone to scratches and can etch if acidic liquids such as lemon juice or wine are left on the surface. It also needs sealing every six to twelve months. In return, you get a surface with genuine depth and warmth that manufactured stone struggles to fully replicate. Expect to pay from around £300 per square metre upwards, with premium Calacatta or Statuario marble reaching £600 or more.

2. Granite: A Tougher Natural Stone Alternative to Quartz

alternatives to quartzGranite is arguably the most direct rival among the , since it matches quartz on hardness and heat resistance while offering a completely natural look. Every slab is one of a kind, and darker colours in particular hide everyday marks well. Granite does need resealing roughly once a year, but otherwise it is a low-fuss surface that suits busy family kitchens. Pricing typically sits between £270 and £600 per square metre installed.

3. Quartzite: Nature's Answer to a Quartz Kitchen Worktop

Confusingly named, quartzite is a genuine natural stone rather than an engineered one, formed from sandstone under intense heat and pressure. It looks similar to marble but is significantly harder and more resistant to scratching. It has become one of the trendiest alternatives to quartz for homeowners who want the marble aesthetic without quite as much of the maintenance worry. Quartzite typically starts around £400 per square metre and can climb well past £900 for rare colours such as Calacatta Macaubas.

4. Solid Wood: A Warm, Renewable Alternative

For a completely different feel, solid wood worktops bring genuine warmth to a kitchen and are one of the more affordable alternatives to quartz, generally priced between £100 and £250 per square metre. Oak, walnut and iroko are common choices. Wood needs regular oiling to stay protected from water and heat, and it will show wear over time, though many owners see that patina as part of the charm rather than a downside.

5. Laminate: The Budget-Friendly Alternative to Quartz

marble kitchen worktopsModern laminate has come a long way and can convincingly mimic or a quartz kitchen worktop at a fraction of the cost, often as little as £60 to £150 per square metre fitted. It will not match natural or engineered stone for durability and cannot be repaired if it chips or burns, but for rental properties, tight budgets or a kitchen you plan to update again in a few years, it remains a sensible option.

Which Alternative to Quartz Should You Choose?

If durability with low maintenance is the priority, granite is the closest match. If you want the most striking natural look and are prepared to reseal it, marble kitchen worktops or quartzite are worth the extra care. If budget is the main driver, laminate or wood will get you a great-looking kitchen without the stone price tag.

How Do These Alternatives to Quartz Compare on Maintenance?

Maintenance is often the deciding factor once looks and budget are settled. Marble kitchen worktops and quartzite both need resealing, marble roughly every six to twelve months and quartzite closer to once a year, while granite sits somewhere in between depending on the specific stone. Wood needs periodic oiling to stop water damage around the sink, and laminate needs almost no maintenance at all, though it also cannot be repaired if damaged. If low ongoing effort matters more to you than a completely natural finish, that is worth weighing just as heavily as any of the other alternatives to quartz covered here.
