Why two pharmacies may quote different prices

best price for modafinil in 2026If you are trying to find the , seeing different prices at different pharmacies can be confusing. One pharmacy may quote more than another even when the medicine appears to be the same.

Price differences can happen for several ordinary reasons, including pack size, supply arrangements, pharmacy pricing, subsidy arrangements and delivery.

1. The pack size may be different

Always compare the number of tablets. A small pack can have a lower total price but a higher price per tablet.

For a useful comparison, write down the quantity and calculate the cost per tablet. This prevents a small package from looking cheaper than it really is.

2. The strength may differ

A different strength is not the same product for price-comparison purposes. Check the prescribed strength before comparing prices.

Never change strength simply because another listing is cheaper. Any change should be discussed with your prescriber.

3. Brand and generic products can be priced differently

Where an appropriate generic option exists, it may have a different price from a branded product.

The right choice depends on your prescription and clinical situation. Ask your pharmacist rather than switching based on an online listing.

4. Subsidy arrangements can change the patient price

PBS arrangements can affect what eligible patients pay. Healthdirect explains that PBS medicines can be supplied at reduced cost for eligible people, while medicines outside those arrangements may require full payment.

So, two people can sometimes see different out-of-pocket costs depending on their circumstances and prescription arrangements.

5. Pharmacy costs are not identical

Pharmacies have different operating costs, suppliers and pricing arrangements. That can lead to differences in the final amount.

A small price difference is not automatically evidence that a pharmacy is doing something wrong. The better question is whether you are comparing the same product and total service.

6. Delivery can change the final amount

For an online order, add shipping to the medicine price. A pharmacy with a slightly higher medicine price may have cheaper delivery.

The final total is what matters. Keep the comparison simple and record every charge.

7. Overseas listings are a separate category

Do not treat an overseas website as just another Australian pharmacy. The TGA warns that products from overseas sites may not be approved for supply in Australia and may be counterfeit or incorrectly labelled.

A very low price can come with a much higher level of uncertainty.

How to compare prices properly

Use a simple worksheet with six columns: product, strength, quantity, medicine price, delivery and total.

If the prescription or consultation adds a cost, record that too. Then calculate the final cost per tablet. This gives you a much cleaner comparison than searching for the lowest headline price.

What if one price looks unusually low?

Take a closer look. Check whether the product is the same, whether a prescription is required, whether the seller is Australian and whether the total includes delivery.

If the website refuses to provide basic information, there is no reason to rush. A transparent pharmacy should be able to explain what you are paying for.
