Choosing an emission-control system for a diesel generator is an important technical decision. While generator capacity is often the first specification businesses consider, it is not the only factor that determines whether an RECD is suitable. Engine characteristics, exhaust configuration, operating conditions, installation environment, and regulatory requirements can all influence the final selection.

A structured evaluation can help DG-set owners identify an emission-control solution that matches their particular application.

What Is an RECD?

RECD stands for Retrofit Emission Control Device. It is an emission-control system designed for integration with an existing diesel generator.

The retrofit approach is different from replacing the complete DG set. Instead, it focuses on adding appropriate emission-control technology to existing equipment.

This can be useful for organizations that have functioning generators and want to explore emission-control improvements while retaining their existing power infrastructure.

Begin With Complete Generator Information

Before selecting a system, collect accurate information about the generator.

Useful information includes:

Generator capacity
Engine manufacturer
Engine model
Fuel type
Exhaust dimensions
Exhaust configuration
Typical operating load
Average operating hours
Installation environment
Available installation space

Having these details available can make technical discussions with an RECD supplier much more productive.

suitable RECD solution for their DG setOrganizations looking for a should provide complete generator information before requesting a final technical recommendation.

Consider the Generator's Operating Pattern

The way a DG set operates can have a significant impact on emission-control planning. Some generators operate only during occasional power failures, while others may run for extended periods because of the nature of the facility.

Load patterns can also vary. A generator operating under changing loads may have different requirements from one operating consistently at a high load.

Understanding the actual operating profile therefore helps create a more realistic technical assessment.

Examine the Exhaust System

An RECD is installed as part of the generator's exhaust arrangement, making exhaust configuration an important consideration.

Before installation, businesses should evaluate pipe dimensions, available space, equipment positioning, exhaust routing, accessibility, and structural requirements.

A site assessment can be especially valuable when several generators are installed in the same location or when the available space around the exhaust system is limited.

Review Applicable Regulatory Requirements

Environmental regulations and technical requirements should always be reviewed before selecting an emission-control system.

Businesses should identify the requirements applicable to their specific generator, location, installation type, and operating conditions. They should also request relevant technical documentation from the supplier.

Because requirements can change, organizations should verify current requirements rather than relying on outdated information or generic online claims.

Evaluate Technical Compatibility

Not every RECD is suitable for every DG set. Compatibility should be evaluated based on the engine and exhaust characteristics.

The technical evaluation may consider exhaust temperature, flow conditions, available back pressure limits, physical dimensions, and other relevant parameters.

This is why selecting an RECD solely on the basis of price or generator capacity can be risky.

Think Beyond Initial Purchase

An emission-control project should be evaluated over its complete operating life.

Businesses should ask about installation, commissioning, routine inspection, maintenance requirements, replacement components, service support, and technical assistance.

A system that is easy to maintain can be more practical for long-term industrial operation.

Compare Suppliers on More Than Price

Cost is an important part of any project, but it should not be the only consideration.

Businesses should compare suppliers based on technical expertise, product documentation, installation capability, after-sales support, and experience with DG-set applications.

A reliable supplier should be able to explain how the proposed system fits the specific generator rather than simply presenting a generic product.

Making the Right Decision

The right RECD is the one that is technically appropriate for the generator and practical for the operating environment.

By collecting accurate generator information, reviewing exhaust conditions, understanding operating patterns, checking applicable requirements, and evaluating supplier support, businesses can make a better-informed decision.

A detailed technical assessment before procurement can ultimately make the retrofit process smoother and help organizations build a more effective approach to diesel-generator emission management.
