Retrofit Emission Control Device (RECD)Diesel generator sets remain an important source of backup and prime power for factories, commercial buildings, hospitals, data centers, construction sites, and institutions. However, diesel combustion produces exhaust emissions that require effective management. A is designed to help control emissions from an existing diesel generator without replacing the complete generating system. This guide explains what an RECD is, how it works, its benefits, installation, maintenance, and selection considerations.

What Is an RECD System?

RECD stands for Retrofit Emission Control Device. It is an emission-control solution installed on an existing diesel generator to reduce targeted pollutants in exhaust. Instead of replacing the complete generator, a suitable retrofit system can be integrated with the existing exhaust arrangement. Configuration depends on generator rating, engine characteristics, exhaust temperature, operating conditions, and requirements.

An RECD package may include filtration or catalytic components, sensors, controls, connecting sections, and safety accessories.

How Does RECD Technology Work?

The working principle depends on the specific RECD technology. In general, exhaust gases produced by the diesel engine pass through the retrofit emission-control unit before being released. Treatment components can capture, oxidize, or otherwise reduce targeted pollutants.

Some systems use particulate filtration, while others use catalytic processes or combinations of technologies. Advanced systems may monitor operating parameters to support consistent performance. Because engines differ, RECD selection should be based on actual generator specifications.

Why Consider RECD for a DG Set?

One advantage of retrofit technology is that it can improve emission management while allowing an existing generator to remain in service. This can help where generator replacement involves high cost, installation work, space requirements, or disruption.

A properly selected system can support cleaner generator operation and help organizations address applicable environmental requirements. It can also provide a structured upgrade for older equipment. However, emission-control performance depends on technology, installation quality, generator condition, fuel, operating profile, and maintenance.

Choosing the Right RECD System

Before purchasing an RECD, collect important generator information. This normally includes manufacturer and model, rated power, engine specifications, exhaust dimensions, fuel type, operating hours, typical load profile, and installation environment. These details help determine compatibility.

The expected emission-control requirement should also be identified. Buyers should ask suppliers for technical documentation, performance information, installation requirements, maintenance procedures, and applicable compliance documentation. Where certification or conformity is required, verify documents for the specific product rather than relying on marketing claims.

Installation Considerations

Installation should be planned carefully because the exhaust system operates at high temperature and may experience vibration, pressure changes, and thermal expansion. The retrofit unit should be installed according to manufacturer instructions and applicable safety requirements.

Provide access for inspection, cleaning, servicing, and component replacement. Exhaust routing, back pressure, mounting arrangements, insulation, and clearances should be evaluated before commissioning. Poor installation can reduce performance and may affect engine operation.

The installation team should confirm that the modified exhaust arrangement does not create unacceptable back pressure. Commissioning checks should verify operating conditions before routine service.

Maintenance and Performance

An RECD is not a fit-and-forget component. Regular maintenance is important for emission-control performance. The schedule depends on technology and operating conditions, but common activities include checking connections, inspecting sensors, monitoring pressure or temperature parameters, servicing filtration components, and examining the exhaust system for leaks or damage.

Generator maintenance is equally important. Poor engine condition, incomplete combustion, unsuitable fuel, excessive oil consumption, or unsuitable loads can increase emissions and place additional stress on an emission-control device. RECD maintenance should be part of the DG set maintenance program.

Benefits for Industrial and Commercial Users

RECD systems can offer practical benefits when correctly selected and maintained. They can provide an emission-control upgrade for existing diesel generators, support environmental management programs, and potentially reduce the need for complete generator replacement. Retrofit solutions may also help where available space, project schedules, or operational continuity make replacement difficult.

Businesses can plan emission-control improvements around existing equipment while continuing established power operations.

Important Buying Checklist

Before purchase, compare compatibility, technology, generator rating, installation, maintenance, warranty, service, documentation, and total ownership cost. Do not select a system solely because of a low purchase price.

Ask whether the supplier provides site assessment, installation, commissioning, after-sales service, and components. Confirm that the quoted product and configuration are suitable for the exact DG set. If CPCB-related compliance is part of the requirement, verify current applicable requirements and product documentation with the supplier and relevant authorities.

For facility managers, the selection process should also consider the generator’s duty cycle and working environment. A system used occasionally for emergency backup may have different service needs from one operating for extended periods. Record installation details, inspection results, and maintenance activities for future reference. Clear documentation helps operators understand the equipment, plan servicing, and communicate technical requirements with suppliers, maintenance teams, and compliance professionals and future upgrades or replacements.

Conclusion

An RECD system can be a practical way to upgrade emission control on an existing diesel generator set. Good results depend on matching the device to the engine, exhaust system, operating profile, and applicable requirements. Proper installation, regular maintenance, and documented performance are equally important.

Organizations should begin with accurate DG set information, define their objective, evaluate suitable options, and verify documentation before purchase. Retrofit technology can support cleaner generator operations without immediate replacement of the complete power system.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What does RECD stand for?

RECD means Retrofit Emission Control Device. It controls targeted exhaust emissions from an existing diesel generator.

2. Can an RECD be installed on an existing DG set?

Yes. Retrofit systems are designed for existing generators, subject to technical compatibility.

3. Does every DG set use the same RECD?

No. Generator rating, engine design, exhaust conditions, and required performance differ.

4. Is professional installation required?

Professional installation is recommended because exhaust systems involve high temperatures, vibration, pressure, and safety considerations.

5. How often does an RECD require maintenance?

Frequency depends on technology, usage, operating conditions, and manufacturer recommendations.

6. Does RECD replace the DG set?

No. It upgrades the exhaust emission-control arrangement instead of replacing the generator.

7. What information is needed to select an RECD?

Useful information includes DG rating, engine model, exhaust specifications, load, fuel, usage pattern, and applicable requirements.

8. What should buyers verify before purchasing?

Verify compatibility, performance documents, installation, maintenance, warranty, service, and applicable certification documents.

9. Can RECD help with environmental compliance?

It can support emission-control objectives, but compliance depends on applicable requirements, configuration, measured performance, and regulations.

10. Where can businesses source an RECD system?

Businesses should choose suppliers offering technical assessment, documentation, installation support, and after-sales service.
