It looks like a small decision, but whether to buy dining chairs with armrests or without them affects comfort, space, style and even how many people can sit at your table. Many buyers choose on looks alone, then find that the chairs do not fit under the table, block walkways or feel cramped.

This guide compares armchairs and armless dining chairs in practical terms, so you can pick the right option for your table, your room and your household.

The Basic Difference

An armless dining chair (often called a side chair) has a seat and backrest only. An armchair, sometimes called a carver chair, adds armrests on either side of the seat.

Both can be beautifully made. The right choice depends on how you use your dining space.

The Case for Armless Dining Chairs

They Save Space

Armless chairs are narrower and tuck fully under the table, which keeps walkways clear. In smaller dining areas, this makes a visible difference. You can also fit more of them around a table, which helps when hosting.

They Are Flexible

Without arms, you can sit at slight angles, shift positions and move chairs easily. Families with children and busy households often prefer this freedom.

They Suit Most Tables

Armless chairs work with almost any table shape, including round, square and rectangular. A wooden dining chair without arms is the most common choice for everyday dining, because it combines comfort with versatility.

They Are Easier to Pair in Sets

A dining chairs wooden set of 4 in an armless design is a practical starting point for many homes, offering matching style at a reasonable footprint.

The Case for Dining Armchairs

They Offer Extra Comfort

Armrests give your arms a place to rest, which makes long meals and conversations more comfortable. Many people find armchairs more relaxing, particularly during lengthy dinners.

They Help with Standing and Sitting

Armrests provide something to push against when rising, which is helpful for older family members or anyone with stiff joints.

They Look Formal and Substantial

A pair of armchairs at the ends of a rectangular table creates a classic, formal look. This “head of the table” arrangement adds visual structure, and it is popular in traditional and transitional interiors.

They Support Posture

A well-designed armchair with supportive arms can help maintain a more upright, relaxed posture, especially in an upholstered dining chair with a generous seat and back.

The Downsides to Consider

Armchairs:

They take up more width, so fewer fit around a table.
They may not slide fully under the table if the arms are too high.
They can scrape or damage table edges if poorly proportioned.
They are less suited to compact rooms.

Armless chairs:

They offer no arm support, which some people miss during long meals.
They provide less help for standing up.
They may feel less formal at the head of a large table.

Key Measurements to Check

Whichever type you choose, measure carefully.

Seat-to-table clearance: Around 25 to 30 cm between the seat and the underside of the table top.
Arm height: For armchairs, the top of the armrest should sit below the table apron, ideally by a few centimetres, if you want the chair to tuck in.
Width per person: Armless chairs need about 55 to 60 cm of table length each. Armchairs may need 65 cm or more.
Space behind chairs: Leave about 90 cm so people can pass and stand up easily.

The Best of Both: Mixing Armchairs and Side Chairs

A popular solution is to combine the two styles. Place armchairs at the two ends of a rectangular table and armless chairs along the sides. You get the formal look and extra comfort for the hosts, while keeping the sides compact and tidy.

For this to look intentional, keep the wood tone, finish and design language consistent. A handcrafted wooden dining chair collection that includes both armless and arm versions in the same style makes this easy.

Material Matters Too

Wood: A teak wood dining chair, with or without arms, gives a durable, long-lasting frame that handles heavy family use. In an armchair, strong joinery at the arm joints is especially important, since arms take extra stress when people push up on them.

Rattan: A rattan dining chair with arms adds a relaxed, resort-like feel, while an armless version keeps the look light. Check that the weave is tight and the edges are smooth.

Upholstery: Padded armchairs deliver the highest comfort for long dining sessions, but fabric and padding quality matter. Choose stain-resistant fabrics and high-density foam.

Which Option Suits Which Table?

Round tables: Armless chairs usually work better, as they tuck in neatly and keep the circle tidy. A compact choice such as the Ghumav Wooden Round Dining Table Set 4 Seater pairs well with simple, armless designs that save space.

Rectangular tables: Armless chairs along the sides with armchairs at the ends is the classic arrangement.

Square tables: Armless chairs keep the proportions balanced and the space flexible.

Small tables or tight rooms: Armless chairs are almost always the more practical choice.

Choosing for Commercial Spaces

For cafés, restaurants and offices, armless chairs usually maximise seating capacity and make cleaning easier. Armchairs work well in lounges, premium dining rooms or boardrooms where comfort and a formal look are the priority.

If you are furnishing a business, a dining chair manufacturer can supply both options in matching designs and customise dimensions to your layout. A reliable dining chair supplier should provide samples so you can test comfort and fit. For larger orders, a dining chair wholesale supplier can offer consistent quality and better pricing across the batch.

Quick Decision Guide

Choose armless if: your space is compact, you host often, you have young children or you want maximum flexibility.
Choose armchairs if: you value comfort during long meals, have older family members, or have a large table and want a formal look.
Mix both if: you have a rectangular table and want comfort and good proportions.

Care Tips

Armchairs have extra joints and surfaces, so give them a little more attention. Tighten loose arm joints early, wipe spills promptly, use felt pads under the legs, and keep wood away from direct heat and harsh sunlight. Refresh finishes with polish or oil every few months, vacuum upholstery regularly and dust rattan with a soft brush.

Final Thoughts

There is no single right answer in the armchair versus armless debate. Armless chairs win on space and flexibility, while armchairs win on comfort and formality. The best choice depends on your table, your room and your family. Measure carefully, think about how you actually dine, and choose well-built chairs that suit your daily routine.
