Indonesia is made up of thousands of islands, and many of them are surrounded by coral reefs, warm clear water and an enormous variety of marine life. From the remote reefs of Raja Ampat to the steep walls of Bunaken and the manta rays around Komodo and Nusa Penida, there's something for every level, whether you're a keen diver or you've never put on a mask before.

If you're travelling from the UAE and thinking about an island holiday, Indonesia tour packages from Dubai can make the planning simpler. They let you combine time in the water with beaches, culture and island sightseeing. The right destination depends on what you want to see, how experienced you are, and when you're travelling. Here are the best diving and snorkelling destinations in Indonesia.

Raja Ampat: A Marine Biodiversity Hotspot

Raja Ampat is one of Indonesia's most celebrated dive destinations, and it's known for having some of the richest marine life on the planet. The archipelago is in Southwest Papua and has limestone islands, hidden beaches, clear lagoons and large coral reefs. Reef fish, manta rays and turtles are all common, especially around the Dampier Strait, Misool and Arborek.

Both divers and snorkellers are well served. Many shallow reefs have coral gardens you can enjoy from the surface, while divers can explore walls, channels and deeper reefs. Currents can be strong or unpredictable at some sites, so choose dives to match your experience and listen to your local guides. It's also remote, so allow extra travel time to get there.

Komodo National Park: Reefs, Mantas and Island Scenery

Komodo National Park is best known for its dragons, but the water around it is just as impressive. Clear seas, colourful reefs and dramatic island scenery make it a great base for underwater trips, with Labuan Bajo as the usual starting point.

Manta Point is a popular stop for people hoping to see manta rays, and Batu Bolong is known for the amount of life packed around a small rock. Be aware that currents in Komodo can be strong, so many of the best dive sites suit experienced divers, while snorkellers can still enjoy suitable shallow spots. A visit here can combine boat trips, beaches, viewpoints and wildlife as well as time in the water.

Bunaken National Park: Coral Walls in North Sulawesi

Bunaken National Park lies off North Sulawesi, in the Coral Triangle, and is famous for its rich coral and fish life. It's best known for steep underwater walls that drop away close to the shore, covered in coral.

Dive sites are spread around Bunaken, Siladen and the nearby islands, with different options for different conditions and experience levels. Snorkellers have it easy too, since there are shallow areas where you can see coral and fish from the surface. It's a good choice if you want to combine proper reef time with a relaxed island atmosphere.

Wakatobi: Remote Reefs in Southeast Sulawesi

Wakatobi, in Southeast Sulawesi, takes its name from its four main islands: Wangi-Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia and Binongko. It's remote, and that's a big part of the appeal if you'd like a quieter sea holiday away from the usual tourist routes.

Tomia is known for its dive sites and varied marine life, and Hoga is a popular place to snorkel. The coral, reef fish and different underwater habitats also make it a favourite with underwater photographers. Conditions differ from site to site, so check local advice before getting in the water.

Bali: Easy Access and Plenty of Variety

Bali is one of the easiest places in Indonesia for visitors, and it offers good diving and snorkelling alongside temples, culture, beaches, shopping and wellness. It suits trips where the underwater time is one part of a wider holiday.

Nusa Penida and Nusa Lembongan are the best-known spots for marine activities. Nusa Penida is famous for its manta rays, as well as coral reefs and tropical fish. Bali has sites for all experience levels, but conditions and currents vary a lot, and Nusa Penida in particular can be demanding. Choose a reputable operator and check the sea conditions before you go in.

Gili Islands: Relaxed and Beginner-Friendly

The Gili Islands lie just off Lombok and are known for their relaxed atmosphere and clear tropical water. Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air all have swimming, snorkelling and diving, and there are no motorised vehicles on the islands, which adds to the slow feel.

Snorkellers often see colourful fish, coral and sea turtles. Some reef areas can be reached by boat, and some from the shore. Dive centres offer courses and guided dives for different levels, which is why the Gilis suit couples, families and solo travellers alike.

Why Indonesia Works So Well for Diving and Snorkelling

The biggest advantage is variety. Across the islands you'll find coral reefs, walls, sandy slopes, lagoons, channels and many other habitats. That means you can shape a trip around what interests you most, whether that's mantas, coral photography, turtles or an easy snorkel.

You can also pair the water time with the rest of Indonesia: traditional villages, local food, waterfalls, beaches, hiking and island trips. Not every day has to be a water day, which makes it a good choice for mixed groups.

Staying Safe and Respecting the Reefs

Match the site to your experience and comfort in the water. Beginners should pick calm spots and use qualified instructors or guides, and experienced divers should follow local advice, since currents and visibility change. Make sure you get a proper safety briefing and use the right equipment. Allow enough time between your last dive and your flight home, and follow your operator's guidance on that.

Look after the reefs too. Don't touch, stand on or take coral, and don't chase or disturb marine animals. Use reef-friendly sunscreen, don't leave litter, and follow national park rules. Seasons also differ across the archipelago: very roughly, Raja Ampat is best from October to April, Komodo from April to December, and Bali and the Gilis from April to October, so check the best months for the area you choose.

Conclusion

Indonesia has an underwater experience for almost every traveller. Raja Ampat is renowned for its diversity, Komodo for its landscapes and mantas, Bunaken and Wakatobi for coral, and Bali and the Gilis for easy access and beaches. Each one offers different scenery, conditions and activities, so you can pick the one that fits your comfort level.

A bit of planning goes a long way. Think about the location, season, sea conditions, your skill in the water and the operator you book with, and you'll have a safer and more memorable trip, with the beaches, culture and natural beauty of Indonesia thrown in.
