Quick answer: For large families and friend groups, the best weekend getaways from Delhi are the ones within a 3–6 hour drive that offer spacious group accommodation and easy shared transport — places like Neemrana, Kasauli, Rishikesh, Jim Corbett, Lansdowne, and Chandigarh consistently work well because they combine short travel time with venues built for bigger groups.

What Makes a Getaway "Large Group Friendly"

A destination that's perfect for a couple isn't always the right fit for 15 cousins or a friend group of 20. Look for:

Resorts or villas with multiple rooms or dormitory-style stays under one property
A destination close enough that the drive itself doesn't eat into the weekend
Enough activities to keep a mixed-age group (kids, parents, grandparents, or a friend group with different interests) engaged
Easy group transport, since splitting a large group across multiple cars almost always causes delays and confusion

1. Neemrana, Rajasthan (2–3 Hours)

Best known for the Neemrana Fort Palace, this is one of the closest options for a genuine heritage-resort weekend. Large groups can book multiple connected rooms, and the property has enough courtyards and viewpoints that a big group doesn't feel cramped. It's also one of the easiest short trips to plan around a Saturday-Sunday schedule without using extra leave.

2. Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh (5–6 Hours)

Kasauli offers a quieter, less crowded alternative to Shimla with cottages and homestays that comfortably host large families. The pine forests and short walking trails work well for groups with both young kids and grandparents, since nothing requires serious trekking fitness.

3. Rishikesh, Uttarakhand (5–6 Hours)

Rishikesh works particularly well for friend groups that want a mix of adventure (river rafting, cliff jumping, bungee) and relaxation (riverside cafés, evening Ganga aarti). Riverside camps here often have group packages that include meals and activities bundled together, which simplifies planning for larger numbers.

4. Jim Corbett National Park, Uttarakhand (6 Hours)

For families that want a wildlife-focused weekend, Corbett's resorts near the park boundary often have large multi-room cottages and organize joint safaris for bigger groups. It's a good pick when the group includes both kids who want to spot animals and adults who'd rather relax by a pool afterward.

5. Lansdowne, Uttarakhand (6–7 Hours)

Lansdowne stays quieter than most Uttarakhand hill stations because of restricted tourist traffic, making it a good choice for a group that wants a genuinely peaceful weekend rather than a crowded hill-station bazaar. Colonial-era guesthouses here can host larger groups comfortably.

6. Chandigarh and Nearby Sukhna Lake (4–5 Hours)

Chandigarh works well as a slightly different kind of weekend — more city comfort, good food, and Sukhna Lake for a relaxed morning or evening out. For groups continuing further into Himachal afterward, arranging a tempo traveller hire in chandigrh locally can save the cost of sending a vehicle all the way back to Delhi and out again.

7. Agra, Uttar Pradesh (Day Trip, Not Overnight)

For groups that want a shorter one-day outing rather than a full weekend away, a same-day Agra tour from Delhi covers the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort comfortably without needing an overnight stay — useful when part of the group has limited time off.

8. Shimla-Manali, Himachal Pradesh (Long Weekend, 3+ Days)

If the group has a long weekend rather than just two days, extending the trip to cover both Shimla and Manali is worth it. A pre-planned Shimla-Manali tour package from Delhi is usually simpler for large groups than arranging hotels and transport separately for each city.

Getting a Large Group There Without the Chaos

Transport is where large-group trips most often fall apart. A few things that help:

Book one shared vehicle instead of multiple cars. For groups of 12–20, a tempo traveller on rent in Delhi keeps everyone on the same schedule and avoids the classic problem of cars getting separated on the highway.
Go bigger for larger groups. For 20 or more people, a Force Urbania on rent offers more comfortable seating and legroom for longer routes like Rishikesh, Corbett, or Himachal.
If the group is heading toward Gurgaon-side pickups or a mixed departure point, checking Urbania on rent in Gurgaon can simplify pickup logistics instead of routing everyone through Delhi first.
For a more premium family occasion (milestone birthdays, anniversaries), a luxury tempo traveller on rent, adds extra comfort for a longer ride.
Book through an established operator. A reliable tour and travel agency in Delhi can confirm vehicle size, driver, and backup arrangements in advance, which matters more with a large group than a small one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best weekend getaway from Delhi for a large family? Neemrana and Kasauli are both strong options — close enough for a two-day trip, with resort and homestay options that comfortably host bigger groups.

How do I arrange transport for a group of 15–20 people? A single tempo traveller or Force Urbania rental works best, since it keeps the entire group together on one vehicle rather than splitting across multiple cars.

Is Agra a good weekend trip or just a day trip? For most groups, Agra works better as a same-day trip from Delhi rather than an overnight stay, since the main sights can comfortably be covered in a single day.

What's a good option for a longer weekend with a large group? Shimla-Manali works well if you have three or more days, since it covers two distinct hill-station experiences without excessive daily travel.

Final Thought

The best weekend getaways for large groups aren't necessarily the most exotic ones — they're the ones where travel time, group accommodation, and transport are all planned to match the group's size. Get the vehicle and route right, and the destination itself becomes the easy part.
