BSc Nautical Science Salary 2026: Rank-Wise Pay

The Merchant Navy follows a clear career structure in the deck department. After completing the course, students generally begin with supervised onboard training and gradually qualify for higher officer ranks.

The following table summarizes the indicative monthly salary ranges in the official nautical officer career guide.

Rank Estimated Monthly Salary
Deck Cadet	₹25,000–₹50,000
Third Officer	₹1.2 lakh–₹2 lakh
Second Officer	₹2 lakh–₹3.5 lakh
Chief Officer	₹3.5 lakh–₹5.5 lakh
Captain or Master	₹5 lakh–₹8 lakh+
Senior Master	₹8 lakh–₹10 lakh+

These amounts should not be treated as fixed industry-wide rates. They may vary significantly according to the company, vessel type, flag state, and employment contract.

1. Deck Cadet Salary

A deck cadet is generally the first onboard position for a student entering the deck department after BSc Nautical Science. At this stage, the main objective is to gain practical experience and learn how a commercial ship operates.

The indicative stipend for a deck cadet is ₹25,000–₹50,000 per month.

The work involves learning navigation procedures, ship safety, cargo operations, watchkeeping, and emergency response under the supervision of experienced officers.

During this period, cadets must complete the required onboard training and maintain their Training Record Book. The time needed to complete the training depends on the applicable requirements and the cadet's progress.

Not every graduate receives the same stipend. Company-sponsored cadets may have different arrangements from students who must find their own training berth.

2. Third Officer Salary

The third officer is generally the first licensed officer rank after the required sea training, examinations, and certification.

The indicative salary ranges from ₹1.2 lakh to ₹2 lakh per month.

Third officers help maintain safe navigation and are responsible for assigned safety equipment and other duties on board. They may also assist with bridge watchkeeping, emergency drills, and maintaining shipboard records.

This position is an important step because it allows a newly qualified officer to gain experience and prepare for further responsibilities.

The salary may increase when an officer joins a company offering better contract terms or works on a vessel requiring specialized skills.

3. Second Officer Salary

A second officer generally earns around ₹2 lakh–₹3.5 lakh per month, according to the indicative salary guide.

The officer performs important navigation-related duties, including passage planning, chart management, and maintaining navigational publications. Medical responsibilities may also form part of the job, depending on the ship's arrangements.

Promotion to this position depends on sea service, competence, certification, and the employer's requirements.

At this stage, officers gain more responsibility and develop the experience needed to progress towards senior deck positions.

4. Chief Officer Salary

The chief officer is the second-in-command on a ship and works closely with the captain.

The indicative monthly salary is ₹3.5 lakh–₹5.5 lakh.

The chief officer supervises deck operations, cargo handling, deck maintenance, safety procedures, and assigned crew members. The role requires strong leadership, technical knowledge, planning skills, and the ability to respond calmly during emergencies.

This is a senior position that normally requires substantial sea experience and the relevant professional certificate.

Officers working on specialized vessels may receive different pay depending on their qualifications, responsibilities, and employment contract.

5. Captain or Master Salary

The captain, also known as the master, holds overall command of the vessel.

The indicative monthly salary is ₹5 lakh–₹8 lakh or more. Some senior positions may offer higher compensation, but no particular amount is guaranteed.

The captain is responsible for the ship's safe operation, navigation, crew management, compliance with maritime regulations, and protection of cargo and the marine environment.

Reaching this position requires years of experience, professional examinations, appropriate certification, and proven leadership ability.

Although the salary can be attractive, the role carries considerable responsibility because the captain must make important decisions that affect the entire vessel.

6. Senior Master Salary

Senior masters may earn approximately ₹8 lakh–₹10 lakh or more per month, according to the indicative salary progression.

Pay depends on the employer, vessel type, experience, contract length, and level of responsibility. This is not a separate guaranteed promotion available after a fixed number of years.

Some experienced masters may move into shore-based positions, such as marine superintendent, fleet operations manager, or maritime safety specialist, depending on their qualifications and career goals.

What Is the Starting Salary After BSc Nautical Science?

The starting salary after a BSc in Nautical Science depends on whether the graduate is still completing onboard training or has obtained the necessary certification to work as a licensed officer.

A graduate who joins as a deck cadet generally receives a training stipend rather than the salary of a qualified officer.

Once the required sea service, examinations, and certification have been completed, the person may become eligible for an officer position.

For example:

During training: A deck cadet may receive around ₹25,000–₹50,000 per month.
After qualifying as a Third Officer: The indicative monthly salary may be ₹1.2 lakh–₹2 lakh.
With further experience: Salary may increase as the officer progresses to higher ranks.

Students should confirm the training berth, sponsorship terms, stipend, and employment conditions before enrolling in a college. Completing the degree does not automatically guarantee a job or immediate promotion.

BSc Nautical Science Salary Per Year

Annual income depends on how many months a seafarer is paid during the year. For this reason, multiplying a monthly contract salary by 12 can give a misleading result.

The following examples use the indicative monthly salary ranges above and assume six months of paid employment at sea.

Rank Monthly Salary Earnings for 6 Paid Months
Deck Cadet	₹25,000–₹50,000	₹1.5–₹3 lakh
Third Officer	₹1.2–₹2 lakh	₹7.2–₹12 lakh
Second Officer	₹2–₹3.5 lakh	₹12–₹21 lakh
Chief Officer	₹3.5–₹5.5 lakh	₹21–₹33 lakh
Captain	₹5–₹8 lakh	₹30–₹48 lakh

These are illustrative contract earnings, not guaranteed annual salaries. They exclude any additional paid leave, bonuses, allowances, deductions, and taxes. The actual number of paid months varies by employer and contract.

Does Merchant Navy Salary Continue During Leave?

Not always. Merchant Navy compensation often works differently from a regular office job.

Some seafarers receive salary only for the months covered by their employment contract. Others may have paid leave, continuous employment arrangements, or additional benefits.

Before accepting a job, check:

The length of the onboard contract.
Whether leave is paid or unpaid.
Whether travel expenses are covered.
Whether food and accommodation are provided.
Whether the contract includes insurance and other benefits.
The currency and schedule of salary payments.

Understanding these details gives students a clearer picture of their actual yearly earnings.

Factors That Affect BSc Nautical Science Salary in 2026

Two officers holding the same rank may earn different salaries. The following factors help explain why.

1. Shipping Company

Large shipping companies may offer competitive salaries, structured training, and employee benefits. Smaller employers may have different pay structures and contract terms.

Students should compare the full employment package instead of choosing a company based only on its advertised salary.

2. Type of Ship

The type of vessel can have a major effect on compensation.

Container ships: Carry containers between ports.
Bulk carriers: Transport commodities such as coal, grain, and iron ore.
Oil tankers: Carry petroleum products and crude oil.
Chemical tankers: Transport specialized chemical cargoes.
LNG and LPG carriers: Transport liquefied natural gas or petroleum gas.

Specialised vessels may offer higher salaries for officers with the required training and experience. However, higher pay is not guaranteed on every specialised ship.

3. Sea Experience

Experience is important for promotion. A newly qualified officer normally has fewer responsibilities than a Chief Officer or Captain.

As officers gain practical skills, complete the required sea service, and obtain higher certificates, they become eligible for more senior positions.

4. Professional Certificates

Merchant Navy officers must hold the certificates required for their rank, duties, and vessel type. Additional approved training may improve employment opportunities where employers need those skills.

5. Employer and Flag State

The salary structure can differ between Indian and foreign employers and between vessels operating under different flag states. Employment agreements, applicable wage standards, and working arrangements also influence compensation.

Is BSc Nautical Science a Good Career in 2026?

BSc Nautical Science can be a good career choice for students who enjoy ships, navigation, international travel, and practical technical work.

One of its main attractions is the possibility of earning a higher salary as professional experience and rank increase.

However, students should understand the challenges before joining. Seafarers may spend months away from home, work rotating watches, face demanding weather conditions, and carry serious safety responsibilities.

The cost of education, availability of a training berth, and the reliability of employment arrangements are also important considerations.

A good decision depends on both career opportunities and whether the lifestyle suits the student.

Advantages of a Career After BSc Nautical Science

Career growth: Officers can progress to senior ranks after meeting the required standards.
International exposure: Seafarers may work on ships travelling between countries.
Practical experience: The job develops navigation, teamwork, safety, and leadership skills.
Salary potential: Compensation can increase significantly with rank and experience.
Alternative career paths: Experienced professionals may later explore suitable shore-based maritime jobs.

Challenges of Working in the Merchant Navy

Despite the attractive salary potential, this career is not suitable for everyone.

Long periods away from family.
Limited personal space and privacy on board.
Rotating shifts and demanding work schedules.
Responsibility for safety and emergency procedures.
Uncertainty about future contracts or promotion.
Medical fitness and certification requirements.

Students should research these challenges carefully rather than making a decision based only on high salary figures.
