Running a small business in Perth involves more than attracting customers, increasing sales and delivering quality services. Business owners also need to manage financial records, understand their tax obligations, maintain healthy cash flow and make informed decisions about future growth.

As a business expands, these responsibilities often become more complicated. Decisions involving staff, equipment, business structures and investment can have significant financial consequences.

business accountant in PerthThis is where a can provide valuable support.

A business accountant helps owners understand their financial position, manage tax and reporting obligations, plan cash flow and assess important business decisions. Rather than focusing only on annual tax returns, an accountant can help businesses build stronger financial processes and prepare for sustainable growth.

Whether you operate a small retail shop, professional practice, construction business or growing company, understanding the role of business accounting can help you make more informed decisions.

What Does a Business Accountant Do?

A business accountant provides financial, taxation and accounting support to businesses. Their work may include financial reporting, tax planning, budgeting, cash flow analysis, business structure advice and assistance with regulatory obligations.

The exact services depend on the accountant's expertise, professional registrations and the needs of the business.

For many Perth business owners, accounting support starts with preparing financial statements and tax returns. However, as business operations expand, ongoing financial analysis and advisory services can become increasingly important.

Key Services a Business Accountant May Provide

Preparing and reviewing financial statements.
Assisting with business income tax obligations.
Reviewing GST and Business Activity Statement (BAS) reporting.
Monitoring financial performance.
Preparing budgets and cash flow forecasts.
Evaluating business structures from an accounting and tax perspective.
Supporting business expansion and investment decisions.
Identifying financial reporting and record-keeping issues.

A business accountant can also work alongside bookkeepers, financial advisers and other professionals to help owners understand different aspects of their operations.

1. Helping Businesses Understand Their Financial Position

One of the greatest challenges for small business owners is understanding how their business is performing financially.

Sales figures alone do not provide a complete picture.

A business might generate strong monthly revenue but still experience financial pressure because of rising operating expenses, unpaid customer invoices or unexpected tax liabilities.

Business accounting helps owners interpret the financial information behind their day-to-day operations.

Understanding Financial Statements

Three important financial reports are commonly used to assess business performance.

Profit and Loss Statement

A profit and loss statement summarises income and expenses over a particular period. It helps owners understand whether business activities are generating an accounting profit or loss.

Balance Sheet

A balance sheet provides a snapshot of assets, liabilities and equity at a particular date.

It helps business owners understand what the business owns, what it owes and its overall financial position.

Cash Flow Statement

A cash flow statement explains cash movements through operating, investing and financing activities.

It can help identify why a business has limited available cash despite reporting a profit.

Why Financial Reporting Matters

Consider a hypothetical Perth-based consulting company generating $600,000 in annual revenue.

Revenue has increased by 15%, but the owner notices that the business bank balance is declining.

An accountant reviewing the financial reports might identify rising subcontractor costs, delayed customer payments or increasing overheads.

The owner can then investigate the underlying issues before making further expansion commitments.

Accurate reporting does not guarantee business success, but it provides a stronger foundation for informed decision-making.

2. Supporting Business Tax Planning and Compliance

Tax obligations are an ongoing responsibility for Australian businesses.

Depending on their structure and activities, businesses may need to manage income tax, GST, PAYG withholding, superannuation and other reporting requirements.

Understanding these responsibilities can be difficult when business owners are also managing employees, customers and operations.

A business tax accountant can help owners understand applicable requirements and prepare for upcoming obligations.

Tax Planning Throughout the Financial Year

Effective tax planning should not be limited to the weeks before the end of the financial year.

Regular reviews allow business owners to assess income, expenditure and potential tax obligations before important decisions are finalised.

Tax planning discussions may include:

Reviewing business income and allowable deductions.
Understanding the tax treatment of business assets.
Assessing the timing and consequences of major purchases.
Reviewing PAYG instalment obligations.
Identifying applicable small business tax concessions.
Considering the tax implications of business structure changes.

The availability of deductions and concessions depends on eligibility requirements and individual circumstances.

Preparing for BAS and GST Obligations

Businesses registered for GST generally need to report relevant GST information through their Business Activity Statements.

Depending on their circumstances, a BAS may also include PAYG withholding, PAYG instalments and other tax obligations.

Accurate bookkeeping is particularly important because incorrectly classified transactions can affect BAS reporting.

An appropriately registered accountant or BAS agent can assist with reviewing transactions, identifying reporting errors and preparing relevant lodgements.

Regular financial reviews can also help owners set aside funds for their tax obligations rather than treating all money in the business bank account as available for spending.

3. Improving Cash Flow Management

Cash flow is one of the most important elements of small business financial management.

A profitable business can still experience cash shortages when customers pay late, expenses increase or significant payments become due before expected income arrives.

This distinction is particularly important for businesses experiencing rapid growth.

How Accountants Help Manage Cash Flow

Business accountants can assist with cash flow forecasting and identifying financial patterns.

A cash flow forecast estimates expected cash receipts and payments over a future period.

It can help business owners prepare for:

Employee wages and superannuation.
Supplier payments.
Rent and operating expenses.
GST and income tax obligations.
Loan repayments.
Equipment purchases.
Seasonal changes in customer demand.

Practical Example: A Perth Construction Business

Imagine a construction business that has secured several new projects.

Although the company expects to generate more revenue, it needs to purchase materials and pay subcontractors before receiving final customer payments.

Without adequate planning, the business could face cash shortages while completing profitable projects.

A cash flow forecast can help the owner estimate when funds will be required and identify potential funding gaps.

The business can then review payment terms, project schedules and available financing options before committing additional resources.

Cash Flow KitThe ATO also provides a designed to help small businesses and advisers assess cash flow management.

4. Helping Business Owners Choose and Review Business Structures

The structure of a business affects taxation, administration, reporting responsibilities and the legal relationship between the business and its owners.

Common Australian business structures include sole traders, partnerships, companies and trusts.

Each structure has different characteristics.

Business structure	General characteristics	Important considerations
Sole trader	Individual operates the business	Personal liability, individual taxation and simpler administration
Partnership	Two or more parties conduct business together	Shared responsibilities, partnership agreements and tax reporting
Company	Separate legal entity	Company reporting, director responsibilities and corporate taxation
Trust	Trustee manages assets or business activities for beneficiaries	Trust deeds, distributions, trustee obligations and taxation rules

There is no single structure that suits every business.

For example, a sole trader may initially prefer relatively simple administration. However, as their operations grow, they may wish to review whether their existing structure continues to meet their commercial, taxation and risk-management needs.

When Should a Business Structure Be Reviewed?

A review may be useful when:

The business expects significant growth.
Additional owners or investors are joining.
The business begins employing more staff.
A major asset purchase is planned.
Ownership arrangements change.
Business succession or a future sale becomes relevant.

Changing structures can also create tax, stamp duty, legal and other consequences.

A business accountant can explain accounting and tax considerations, while legal and other specialist advisers may be needed for matters outside the accountant's professional scope.

5. Supporting Budgeting and Business Growth Decisions

Growing a business requires careful planning.

Hiring additional employees, opening another location or purchasing new equipment can increase revenue potential, but these decisions can also increase financial commitments.

Business accountants can help owners assess the financial implications of growth opportunities.

Preparing Realistic Business Budgets

A business budget estimates expected income and expenses over a specific period.

Rather than relying exclusively on sales targets, a useful budget considers operating costs, staffing requirements, expected margins and available resources.

An accountant may help the owner compare budgeted figures with actual results.

For example, a Perth-based retail business may plan to open a second store.

Before proceeding, the owner should understand the likely costs of rent, fit-out, inventory, staffing, utilities and other expenses.

Financial modelling can help estimate how much additional revenue the new location would need to generate to cover these costs.

Measuring Business Performance

Regular performance reviews help identify whether the business is meeting its objectives.

Useful financial indicators may include:

Gross profit margin.
Net profit margin.
Operating expenses as a percentage of revenue.
Accounts receivable ageing.
Working capital.
Cash flow from operations.
Actual results compared with budget.

The most useful indicators depend on the industry and business model.

For example, inventory turnover may be particularly relevant to retailers, while debtor days may be important for professional service businesses.

6. Supporting Better Bookkeeping and Accounting Systems

Accurate financial records are essential for both compliance and business management.

However, bookkeeping can become difficult when transactions increase, employees are hired or the business starts operating across multiple revenue channels.

A business accountant can help review accounting processes and identify opportunities for improvement.

Why Reliable Bookkeeping Matters

Good bookkeeping provides the information needed to prepare financial reports and tax returns.

It also allows business owners to monitor expenses, customer payments and financial commitments.

Common bookkeeping problems include:

Mixing business and private transactions.
Recording expenses in incorrect categories.
Failing to reconcile bank accounts.
Losing receipts or supporting documents.
Duplicating transactions.
Recording GST incorrectly.

The ATO requires businesses to maintain appropriate records supporting their tax and superannuation affairs.

Accounting software can make record keeping more efficient, but automated systems still require accurate setup and regular review.

Using Cloud Accounting Software

Platforms such as Xero, MYOB and QuickBooks can support invoicing, bank reconciliation, expense tracking and financial reporting.

An accountant can help a business assess whether its accounting system meets its requirements.

They may also assist with reviewing account categories, financial reports and transaction classifications.

The objective is not simply to introduce more technology. It is to create reliable financial information that business owners can understand and use.

7. Providing Accounting Support as a Business Expands

The accounting needs of a business often change as its operations become more complex.

A startup may initially focus on record keeping, registrations and understanding basic tax obligations.

An established business may require more detailed management reports, cash flow forecasts and financial analysis.

A growing company may also need to assess funding, major investments or changes to its operating structure.

Accounting Needs at Different Business Stages

Business stage	Common financial priorities	Potential accounting support
Startup	Business setup, registrations and initial budgeting	Structure considerations, accounting setup and tax guidance
Early operations	Bookkeeping, cash flow and compliance	Financial reporting, BAS support and budget reviews
Growth	Staff, equipment and increased transactions	Forecasting, financial analysis and tax planning
Established business	Profitability, efficiency and ongoing obligations	Management reporting and business advisory
Expansion or succession	Investment, ownership and future planning	Financial modelling, structure reviews and specialist coordination

Not every business needs the same level of accounting assistance.

However, reviewing support arrangements as the business grows can help ensure financial reporting remains appropriate for its size and complexity.

8. Business Accountant vs Traditional Tax Return Services

Some business owners only contact their accountant when an annual tax return is due.

While tax compliance is important, ongoing business accounting can provide additional information for day-to-day decisions.

The distinction is not necessarily between two different professionals. Many accounting firms offer both tax compliance and business advisory services.

Area	Annual tax-focused engagement	Ongoing business accounting
Income tax returns	Primary focus	Included where agreed
BAS and GST	May be included	Can be reviewed regularly
Financial statements	Usually prepared periodically	May include regular management reporting
Cash flow forecasting	Not always included	Available as an advisory service
Budgeting	Generally outside basic tax preparation	Can form part of ongoing support
Business decisions	Tax implications may be considered	Broader financial analysis may be available

For a business with relatively simple affairs, annual accounting assistance may be sufficient.

For businesses managing rapid growth, multiple employees or substantial financial commitments, more frequent reviews may be beneficial.

The right arrangement depends on the business's needs, the scope of services and the fees involved.

9. How to Choose a Business Accountant in Perth

Selecting an accountant involves more than comparing fees.

Business owners should consider whether the accountant has suitable qualifications, registrations, experience and services for their circumstances.

Important Factors to Consider

Relevant business experience

An accountant familiar with businesses of a similar size or industry may be better placed to understand common financial challenges.

Tax and compliance knowledge

The accountant should have appropriate expertise and registrations for the tax services they provide.

Communication

Financial information should be explained clearly enough for business owners to understand.

Reporting and advisory capabilities

Owners seeking ongoing support should ask whether financial reviews, cash flow forecasting and business advisory services are available.

Technology and accounting systems

Experience with the business's accounting software can support efficient reporting and communication.

Transparent service arrangements

Business owners should understand the services included, fee structure, responsibilities and any additional charges.

Before engaging any provider, confirm the services offered and whether they are appropriate for your business.

10. Common Accounting Mistakes Small Businesses Should Avoid

Many accounting problems arise from everyday business practices rather than unusually complex transactions.

Identifying these issues early can reduce administrative difficulties and improve financial visibility.

Relying Only on Revenue Figures

Increasing sales does not necessarily mean a business is becoming more profitable.

Owners should also monitor operating costs, margins and cash flow.

Leaving Tax Preparation Until the Last Minute

Waiting until year-end to review financial records can make it more difficult to identify issues and understand upcoming tax obligations.

Regular reviews support more organised tax preparation.

Mixing Personal and Business Expenses

Using business funds for private expenditure without proper recording can complicate bookkeeping and create potential tax consequences.

Maintaining accurate records helps distinguish business and private transactions.

Making Major Purchases Without Financial Analysis

Purchasing equipment, vehicles or additional assets may affect cash flow and tax outcomes.

Business owners should consider the full financial cost rather than focusing only on potential deductions.

Not Reviewing Financial Reports

Accounting reports have limited practical value if they are prepared but never used.

Reviewing financial performance can help owners identify changes and make informed business decisions.

11. Practical Ways to Strengthen Business Financial Management

Small business owners do not need to become accounting specialists to improve their financial processes.

However, consistent financial habits can make managing a business easier.

Consider the following practices:

Review cash flow regularly. Compare expected receipts with upcoming payments.
Keep financial records current. Record transactions and reconcile accounts consistently.
Separate tax funds. Plan for GST, PAYG and other relevant obligations.
Monitor profitability. Understand which activities contribute most to business earnings.
Review budgets. Compare actual performance against expected results.
Seek professional assistance when necessary. Review unfamiliar or significant tax and accounting decisions before proceeding.

These practices can help improve the quality of financial information available to business owners.
