What is Nitric Acid Fuming?

Nitric acid fuming is a highly concentrated form of nitric acid that emits visible fumes when exposed to air. These fumes are mainly composed of nitrogen dioxide, which is formed due to the decomposition of nitric acid molecules.

Unlike standard nitric acid solutions, fuming nitric acid contains a much higher concentration of active acid. This higher concentration results in increased chemical reactivity, making it suitable for industrial processes that require powerful oxidation and rapid reaction rates.

The liquid may appear colorless when pure, but it often develops a yellow, reddish, or brown tint because of dissolved nitrogen oxides.
