A DG Set RECD Device can be considered for an older diesel generator when the generator is technically compatible with the selected retrofit emission-control system. Retrofit technology is specifically intended to provide emission-control options for existing equipment. However, the age of the DG set alone does not determine suitability; engine specifications, exhaust conditions, and applicable requirements must also be evaluated.

What Is a Retrofit Emission Control Device?

RECD stands for Retrofit Emission Control Device.

Unlike replacing the complete DG set, a retrofit device is designed to be added to an existing exhaust system.

Can Every Old DG Set Use RECD?

No.

An older DG set should first be evaluated for compatibility.

Important factors include:

Engine model
DG capacity
Exhaust flow
Exhaust temperature
Back-pressure limit
Physical exhaust arrangement
Engine condition

Why Consider RECD for an Existing DG?

Replacing a complete generator may not always be practical.

If an existing DG set is otherwise suitable for continued operation, an appropriate retrofit emission-control system can be considered as part of an emission-management strategy.

What Should Be Checked Before Installation?

Engine Condition

The engine should be in suitable operating condition.

Exhaust System

The existing exhaust arrangement should be inspected for leakage, damage, corrosion, and dimensions.

Exhaust Parameters

Flow, temperature, and permissible back pressure should be evaluated.

Applicable Requirements

The facility should identify the environmental and regulatory requirements applicable to its specific DG installation.

Can RECD Improve an Old DG's Emission Performance?

A suitable RECD is designed to control targeted emissions from the exhaust.

However, its performance depends on the condition of the engine and the operating environment.

A poorly maintained engine can continue to produce excessive emissions even after an emission-control device is installed.

What About Maintenance?

Older DG sets may require more attention because of their operating age and maintenance history.

After RECD installation, both systems should be maintained properly.

Conclusion

A DG Set RECD Device can potentially be used with an older diesel generator if the generator meets the technical compatibility requirements of the selected system. Before installation, engine condition, exhaust parameters, back pressure, physical arrangement, and applicable requirements should be evaluated. Proper maintenance remains essential for both the generator and the RECD.

FAQs

1. Can RECD be installed on an old DG set?

Yes, provided the DG set is technically compatible with the selected RECD.

2. Does DG age determine RECD suitability?

No. Technical specifications and operating conditions are more important.

3. Should an old DG engine be serviced before RECD installation?

The engine should be in proper operating condition, so any required maintenance should be addressed.

4. Can RECD replace an old DG set?

No. RECD is an emission-control retrofit device, not a replacement for the generator.

5. What should be checked before buying an RECD?

Engine details, DG capacity, exhaust flow, temperature, back pressure, and applicable requirements should be checked.

Can a DG Set RECD Device Be Used for Old Diesel Generators?

Unlike replacing the complete DG set, a retrofit device is designed to be added to an existing exhaust system.
