Food makes or breaks an event. Venue and decoration notwithstanding, the first thing that comes to mind after an event, in case there was something wrong with the food, is the food. This is why selecting a catering servics in Kolkata for your wedding, birthday party, corporate event, or even your family gathering needs some serious thought.

Initiative Caterer offers selected menus at a cost of Rs. 700 per plate for around 200 guests, totaling around Rs. 1,40,000 for food alone. But before you confirm on any quotation, let us know what you want.

What Kind of Event Are You Planning?

No two events need the same menu. A Bengali wedding calls for something traditional — fish, rice, dal, sweets, the works. A kid’s birthday party needs snacks and stuff children will actually eat, maybe a live counter or two. A corporate lunch just needs to be quick, clean, and get everyone fed without holding up the meeting.

Initiative Caterer handles most of these:

Weddings, receptions, engagements
Birthdays, anniversaries, housewarmings
Family functions and private parties
Office lunches, conferences, product launches
Buffet setups and live-counter service

The menu gets built around whatever the occasion calls for — not the other way around.

Wedding Catering in Kolkata

Catering for the wedding is not limited to the buffet service alone. Everything from the menu, quantity, time, staff, and serving of food should go together as hundreds of people could come in no time at all.

In case of Bengali weddings, the foods that will be served would include the traditional foods which include luchi or kachuri, choler dal, begun bhaja, basanti pulao, fish fry, bhetki and chingri preparations, chicken or mutton, Bengali chutney, rosogolla, sandesh, and mishti doi.

Bengali cuisine can blend with the North Indian or Mughlai food.

Bengali Catering in Kolkata

If you want something rooted in Bengali flavours — for a wedding, an anniversary, or just a family gathering — here’s roughly how it breaks down:

Course

Typical options

Starters

Fish fry, beguni, vegetable starters

Main course

Rice, pulao, dal, fish, chicken, mutton

On the side

Chutney, papad, seasonal items

Sweets

Rosogolla, sandesh, mishti doi, payesh

You don’t need a huge spread to make it feel complete. A tighter, well-picked menu often works better than an overloaded one, and it’s easier on the budget too.

Birthday and Private Party Catering

A birthday at home is nowhere near the scale of a wedding, so the menu shouldn’t try to be. Starters, a few snacks, a proper main course, dessert, drinks, and something the kids will actually eat — that covers it for most home parties.

For bigger celebrations, live counters help liven things up — puchka, chaat, pasta, BBQ, grill stations, dessert or drinks counters. Just pick based on who’s coming; a 10-year-old’s birthday and a 40th anniversary party need very different counters.

Corporate Events Catering in Kolkata

Office catering runs on different rules entirely. A conference or a client lunch needs food that shows up on time, gets served fast, and doesn’t get in the way of whatever business is actually happening.

Things worth sorting out ahead of time: when the food needs to arrive, how the buffet’s laid out, headcount, veg/non-veg split, whether you need serving staff, tea and coffee arrangements, and who’s handling cleanup after. At a certain scale, corporate events catering starts looking more like logistics planning than cooking.

So What Does ₹700 a Plate Actually Get You?

For selected menus, Initiative Caterer’s starting price is ₹700 per plate for around 200 guests:

200 guests × ₹700 = ₹1,40,000

This is a starting food budget, not a universal package price. The final quotation can change depending on the number of starters, main-course selection, fish, chicken or mutton, premium ingredients, desserts, beverages, live counters, buffet or sit-down service, serving staff, crockery and equipment, venue, transportation, on-site cooking and other event requirements.

This is why two caterers quoting ₹700 and ₹900 per plate may not necessarily be offering comparable menus. The useful question is: what exactly is included in the quoted price?

Planning for Around 200 Guests

If your guest list is roughly in that range, four things matter before you even start collecting quotes:

Guest count — go with your realistic number, not the optimistic one.

Budget per plate — ₹700/plate at 200 guests puts you around ₹1.40 lakh to start.

Menu type — veg, Bengali, multi-cuisine, premium, live-counter — decide the direction first.

Service style — buffet vs sit-down, live counters, staffing, crockery, on-site cooking.

The more specific you are upfront, the closer the first quotation will be to what you actually pay.

Why Headcount Changes Everything

A 50-person dinner and a 200-person reception aren’t just different in scale — they’re different in kind. Even two 200-person events can look completely different operationally if one has a single buffet line and the other has four live counters running at once.

Getting the caterer an accurate number early helps with food quantities, staffing, buffet setup, and — obviously — the final cost.

Customised Catering Menus in Kolkata

A cheaper package on paper isn’t always the better deal once you look at what’s actually on the plate. A few examples of how this tends to play out:

Wedding — Bengali or multi-cuisine, starters, fish/chicken/mutton, rice, dessert, maybe live counters
Birthday — starters, snacks, main course, dessert, kid-friendly options
Corporate lunch — a clean buffet covering veg and non-veg, drinks, dessert
Anniversary — a tighter menu, fewer items but well chosen
Housewarming — usually vegetarian or a light mixed menu, depending on the family

Initiative Caterer builds around these rather than pushing a one-size package.

Live Counters for Weddings and Events

Puchka, chaat, pasta, BBQ, grill, dessert stations, coffee or drinks counters — these add energy to an event, no question. But more counters isn’t automatically better. Past a certain point you’re just adding cost without adding much to the experience. Match the counters to the guest count and the vibe of the event, not the other way around.

Before You Book Anyone

A few questions worth asking any caterer, not just this one: What’s actually included in the per-plate price? Can the menu be changed? How many starters come with it? What fish or meat options are on offer? Are desserts part of the deal? Is there an option for live counters? How many staff will be on-site serving? Does the quote include crockery and transport? Can they cook on location? And can you taste the food before you commit?

Get it in writing. A verbal quote leaves too much room for “that wasn’t included.”

Where They Operate

Initiative Caterer is based out of Salt Lake and covers events across Kolkata — Salt Lake, New Town, Rajarhat, Ballygunge, Gariahat, Central and South Kolkata, Howrah, and nearby areas. They’ve been at this since 1998, so that’s 28 years in the business at this point.

Booking Timeline

For weddings and bigger events, don’t wait too long to start the conversation. Have your date, venue, headcount, event type, cuisine preference, veg/non-veg call, rough budget, and service style ready to share — it lets the team check availability and put together something that actually fits.
