How to Choose Brushes for Your Routine

Complexion products

If you wear foundation, concealer, powder, or blush, prioritize brush shapes that suit those products. A denser brush can help spread certain cream or liquid products, while a fluffier brush may be useful for applying or diffusing powder. The ideal shape depends on the formula and finish you prefer. If you usually apply foundation with a sponge or your fingers, you may not need several complexion brushes immediately.

Eye makeup

Eye brushes can help place color, soften edges, and add detail. A flatter shape is often useful for placing pigment, while a softer, tapered shape can help blend transitions. Beginners can start with a simple approach: use one brush to place color and another clean brush to soften the edges. You can build a more complex technique as you become comfortable.

Bristle feel and material

Bristle material affects softness, flexibility, product pickup, and cleaning. The Splashis listing identifies rayon bristles, but a material name alone cannot tell you exactly how a brush will feel on your skin. If you have sensitive skin, check the product details and inspect the brush gently when it arrives. Stop using any tool that causes irritation, and keep brushes clean between uses.

Handle and ferrule construction

The handle should be comfortable to grip and long enough to control your movements. The ferrule—the section that connects the bristles to the handle—should feel secure. Avoid pulling on the bristles or soaking the handle during cleaning, since excess moisture can loosen the adhesive in many brush designs.

Why a Storage Case Is Useful

A storage holder helps keep brushes together instead of loose in a drawer or makeup bag. It can also make a kit easier to pack for travel or keep on a vanity. Storage does not replace cleaning, though. A closed case should only hold brushes that are fully dry, because trapped moisture can encourage unpleasant odors and make tools less hygienic.

How to Use a Brush Set Without Overcomplicating Your Makeup

Start with a clean face and clean hands.
Choose a brush based on the product and the area you are working on.
Use a small amount of product first, then build coverage gradually.
Blend with light strokes instead of pressing hard against the skin.
Use a separate clean brush when you need to soften edges or avoid mixing colors.
Clean the brushes regularly and allow them to dry completely before putting them away.

There is no need to use all 12 brushes every day. A daily routine might rely on only a few tools, while the rest are useful for special occasions or more detailed looks. Let your routine determine which brushes earn a permanent place on your vanity.

How to Clean Makeup Brushes Properly

Brushes collect makeup residue, oils, and dust with repeated use. Clean them according to how frequently you use them and the type of product applied. For routine cleaning, wet the bristles without soaking the handle, use a gentle brush cleanser or mild soap, and work the product through the bristles carefully. Rinse until the water runs clear, reshape the brush head, and lay the brush flat or angle the bristles downward to dry. Avoid standing wet brushes upright, because water can travel toward the handle joint.

Do not share eye or lip brushes without cleaning them, and replace a brush if the bristles shed excessively, the ferrule becomes loose, or cleaning no longer removes residue. These habits are more important than owning a large collection.

Who Is This Type of Brush Kit Best For?

A 12-piece set can suit makeup beginners who want several basic tools in one purchase, everyday users who prefer a coordinated collection, or travelers who appreciate a case.
