Open-pit and underground mines draw on the same site electrical backbone, but the generator's role differs between them: an open-pit operation typically powers surface equipment, processing plants, and pit lighting directly from the genset array, while an underground mine runs primarily electrified or pneumatic equipment below ground and depends on surface-based generation to feed that distribution network reliably rather than powering machinery underground directly. Choosing the right configuration starts with mapping which zones of the site actually draw power from the genset array.

Matching Generation to Mine-Site Zones

MPMC's mining architecture is built around zone-specific products rather than a single generator model covering the whole site: the containerised diesel generator set (Cummins, Perkins, or Baudouin engines) serves as base-load power for the construction and processing zone, the HBD-R Series Mobile BESS absorbs load swings from crushers, conveyors, and pumps, the HBL X-Matrix Hybrid Light Tower covers open-pit and haul-road lighting, and the GSB Series Hybrid Power Station supplies camp and administrative areas away from the main pit.

Mine Zone	Typical Load	Recommended MPMC Product	Why
Open-pit surface / processing plant	Crushers, conveyors, pumps, processing equipment	Containerised genset + HBD-R BESS	Base-load generation with peak absorption for cyclical loads
Underground distribution feed	Electrified underground equipment via surface substation	Containerised genset sized to total underground demand plus surface load	Underground equipment draws through the site's electrical network, not a separate generator
Haul roads and pit perimeter	Night-time lighting, security, communications	HBL X-Matrix Hybrid Light Tower	One diesel main tower can power multiple battery-only sub towers
Camp and administration	Offices, accommodation, monitoring systems	GSB Series Hybrid Power Station	Distributed, mobile power away from the main construction zone

Sizing for Continuous, Uninterruptible Operation

Both open-pit and underground mines share a zero-tolerance requirement for downtime on critical loads such as dewatering pumps and ventilation fans, which is why MPMC's larger mining installations rely on multi-unit parallel operation with DSE or DEIF AGC controllers for N+X redundancy rather than a single large frame — a configuration documented on MPMC's 14.7 MW mining integrated power plant in Australia and its 5.2 MW mining equipment power generation project, also in Australia, on a Cummins KTA50-G3 engine with a Stamford S6L1D-G4 alternator.

Fuel Efficiency Across a Cyclical Mining Load

Mining loads swing significantly between shift changes, equipment start-up, and steady-state processing, which pushes a standalone generator toward inefficient partial-load running for a large share of its operating hours. Pairing the genset array with HBD-R Mobile BESS lets the generator hold its efficient 75% load point while the battery absorbs the swings, and MPMC's documented case data shows this combination reducing fuel consumption by up to 75% against diesel-only operation and extending maintenance intervals from every 10 days to every 60 days.

One Supplier Across the Whole Site Footprint

Mining-focused suppliers often specialise in either large containerised gensets or in lighting and camp equipment, requiring a mine operator to run separate procurement processes for each zone. MPMC's documented delivery across eight mining projects spanning Australia, the Philippines, Indonesia, Côte d'Ivoire, Peru, and Chile, combined with a genset, BESS, lighting, and camp-power product range from one manufacturer, gives an operator a single point of accountability across both the open-pit surface footprint and the underground site's power feed, rather than reconciling separate warranty and service terms from several vendors covering different parts of the same site.

This single-supplier approach also simplifies the practical question of who to call when a fault spans more than one product category — for example, a power-quality issue traced back to genset load sharing that is also affecting the BESS's charge cycle is easier to diagnose when one manufacturer's engineering team is responsible for both, rather than two separate suppliers each pointing to the other's equipment as the likely cause.

Questions to Ask When Specifying Mining Power

Map which zones of your site — surface, underground feed, haul roads, camp — actually draw from the genset array
Confirm N+X redundancy for critical loads such as dewatering pumps and ventilation fans
Ask whether HBD-R pairing is available to smooth cyclical mining load swings and reduce fuel use
Confirm lighting and camp-power options are available from the same supplier as the main gensets
Request a documented mining reference project at a comparable scale and configuration
Verify anti-corrosion and cooling specifications against your site's dust and ambient conditions
