Citigold jewellery75.1 tonnes in Q2 2026₹1.13 trillion represents a broad category of gold ornaments designed for everyday wear, festive occasions, weddings and special events. Gold jewellery remains deeply connected with Indian household consumption and cultural traditions, although current market conditions are changing how consumers buy it. According to the World Gold Council, India’s jewellery demand reached , down 15% year-on-year, while the value of jewellery demand increased 34% year-on-year to approximately .

Understanding Gold Jewellery

Gold jewellery is produced by combining gold with other metals to achieve the required hardness, durability, colour and working characteristics. Pure gold is relatively soft, so jewellery is commonly manufactured in different levels of fineness.

Common gold purities include:

14K (585) – 58.5% gold
18K (750) – 75% gold
20K (833) – 83.3% gold
22K (916) – 91.6% gold
23K (958) – 95.8% gold
24K (995) – 99.5% gold

These are among the gold fineness grades permitted under the relevant Indian hallmarking standards.

Why Gold Purity Matters

Purity directly affects the gold content and therefore contributes significantly to the value of an ornament. Higher-purity gold generally contains a greater proportion of the precious metal, while lower-purity alloys contain more other metals.

For jewellery buyers, understanding purity is particularly important because two visually similar ornaments can contain different amounts of gold.

The price of an ornament can also include:

Gold value
Making charges
Wastage or manufacturing-related charges, where applicable
Gemstone costs
Taxes
Design or finishing costs

Therefore, comparing only the displayed gold rate may not provide the complete cost of a jewellery item.

Hallmarking and HUID

Hallmarking is an important consumer-protection mechanism in India's precious-metals market. According to the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), hallmarking provides an official indication of precious-metal purity or fineness.

Hallmarked gold jewellery carries three key components:

BIS logo
Purity/fineness mark
Six-digit alphanumeric HUID

The HUID, or Hallmark Unique Identification number, is unique to the individual hallmarked article and can be verified through the BIS Care application.

Buyers should therefore examine the hallmark and verify the HUID before completing a purchase.

How to Buy Gold Jewellery Carefully

Before purchasing, consumers should consider several factors:

Check purity: Confirm the stated carat and fineness.

Verify hallmarking: Look for the BIS mark, purity information and HUID.

Compare total prices: Examine the final bill rather than comparing only the gold rate.

Understand making charges: Ask whether charges are calculated by weight, percentage or a fixed amount.

Check gemstones: If gemstones are included, understand their type, quality and pricing separately.

Request documentation: Keep the invoice and relevant purchase information for future reference.

Caring for Gold Jewellery

Proper maintenance can help preserve the appearance of gold ornaments. Jewellery should be stored separately to reduce scratching and tangling. Exposure to perfumes, cosmetics, household chemicals and harsh cleaning substances should be minimized.

Regular professional inspection can also help identify loose stones, damaged clasps, weakened links or other structural problems.

Final Considerations

Gold jewellery combines precious-metal value, craftsmanship and personal or cultural significance. Current Indian market data shows that consumers are adapting to elevated gold prices by considering lighter pieces, different purities and exchange options. At the same time, spending on jewellery remains substantial despite lower physical volumes.
