Understanding the Jhumka Design

The classic jhumka generally consists of a dome-shaped lower section and a decorative top. Traditional versions may feature intricate filigree, granulation, embossed motifs, or small hanging beads. Contemporary designs can be considerably lighter and simpler, making them suitable for office wear, casual occasions, and smaller celebrations.

Gold, Gold-Plated, and Alloy Options

When choosing jhumkas, it is important to distinguish between solid gold and jewellery that merely has a gold-colored or gold-plated finish.

Solid gold jewellery is generally identified by its karatage, such as 22K, 18K, or 14K. Higher-karat gold contains a greater proportion of pure gold but can also be softer. Lower-karat alloys contain more additional metals, which can improve durability.

Gold-plated jhumkas contain a layer of gold over another base material. They can provide a similar visual appearance at a lower initial cost, but the coating can gradually wear with frequent use.
