RECD for DG setDiesel generators are widely used for backup and continuous power in commercial, industrial, and other facilities. Since DG sets produce exhaust emissions, proper emission-control measures are important for cleaner and compliant operation. A can be used as an emission-control solution for applicable in-use generator sets, but its performance depends heavily on correct selection, installation, and maintenance.

Common RECD installation mistakes to avoidEven a good RECD system may not perform as expected if it is installed incorrectly. In this article, we will discuss the , along with practical tips to help ensure proper installation and reliable DG-set operation.

What Is RECD Installation for DG Sets?

RECD installation for DG setsRECD, or Retrofit Emission Control Device, is an after-treatment system designed to control particulate emissions from applicable diesel generator exhaust. generally involves selecting a suitable device, fitting it into the exhaust system, checking compatibility, and ensuring that the installation follows the applicable technical and certification requirements.

The device should not simply be selected based on generator capacity alone. Engine family, exhaust configuration, operating conditions, and the applicable certification range should also be considered.

1. Choosing the Wrong RECD for the DG Set

One of the most common mistakes is selecting an RECD without checking whether it is suitable for the specific DG set.

Different engines and engine families can have different exhaust characteristics. Installing a device outside its applicable range can create performance and compliance issues.

What to do:

Check the DG set make and model.
Confirm engine power and engine family.
Check the RECD's applicable range.
Verify relevant Type Approval and certification documentation.
Consult the manufacturer or qualified installation professional when required.

2. Ignoring Exhaust Pipe Size and Configuration

The exhaust system plays an important role in RECD performance. Incorrect pipe dimensions, unsuitable bends, or poor connections can affect exhaust flow.

Before installation, the existing exhaust arrangement should be inspected carefully. The RECD should be integrated into the system according to the manufacturer's technical requirements.

Avoid making unnecessary modifications to the exhaust system simply to accommodate the device.

3. Incorrect RECD Positioning

Another common mistake is installing the RECD in an unsuitable location.

The device needs to operate within its specified temperature and exhaust-flow conditions. Poor positioning can affect performance and may also make inspection or maintenance difficult.

The installation location should provide:

Appropriate exhaust flow
Suitable temperature conditions
Adequate structural support
Safe clearance from surrounding components
Easy access for inspection and maintenance

4. Poor Installation of Exhaust Connections

Loose joints and improperly sealed exhaust connections can cause exhaust leakage.

This is not only an installation-quality issue but can also create safety and environmental concerns. All connections should be properly aligned and secured according to the installation requirements.

After installation, the exhaust system should be inspected for leakage before the DG set is returned to normal operation.

5. Not Checking Back Pressure

Exhaust back pressure is another important consideration during RECD installation.

An incorrectly installed or unsuitable device can increase exhaust restriction. Excessive back pressure may affect engine performance and operating conditions.

Therefore, back pressure should be checked against the engine manufacturer's permissible limits and the RECD manufacturer's installation requirements.

6. Installing RECD Without Checking the Engine Condition

A retrofit device cannot compensate for an engine that is already suffering from serious maintenance problems.

Before installing an RECD, the DG set should be checked for issues such as:

Excessive smoke
Poor combustion
Faulty fuel injectors
Air-filter restrictions
Lubrication problems
Abnormal engine performance

A properly maintained engine provides a better foundation for an emission-control system.

7. Ignoring DG Set Load Conditions

DG sets can operate at different loads, and exhaust temperature and flow can change with operating conditions.

Installing an RECD without understanding the generator's typical operating profile can result in an unsuitable application.

Before installation, consider the generator's normal load, operating hours, exhaust conditions, and intended application.

8. Skipping Proper Testing After Installation

Installation should not be considered complete simply because the RECD has been physically fitted.

Post-installation checks are important. The DG set should be operated and inspected to confirm that the system is functioning properly.

Depending on the applicable requirements, checks may include exhaust leakage, back pressure, operating conditions, and relevant emission-performance verification.

9. Using Incomplete or Unverified Documentation

Documentation is an important part of a proper RECD installation.

Before purchasing or installing an RECD, check the relevant certification and technical documents. Do not rely only on a sales brochure or verbal claims.

Important documents may include:

Type Approval documentation
Technical specifications
Applicable engine/engine-family range
Installation instructions
Maintenance requirements
Warranty information
Testing or compliance documentation, where applicable

10. Neglecting Maintenance After Installation

RECD installation is not the end of the process. Regular inspection and maintenance are necessary to keep the system operating properly.

The maintenance schedule should follow the RECD manufacturer's recommendations and the operating conditions of the DG set.

Regular checks can help identify problems such as blockage, excessive restriction, damaged components, or other installation-related issues before they become serious.

How to Avoid Common RECD Installation Mistakes

The easiest way to avoid installation problems is to follow a structured process:

Identify the exact DG set and engine family.
Select a compatible RECD.
Verify relevant certification and documentation.
Inspect the existing exhaust system.
Confirm pipe size and installation requirements.
Install the device correctly and securely.
Check exhaust leakage and back pressure.
Test the DG set after installation.
Maintain the RECD according to the recommended schedule.
Keep installation and maintenance records.

Why Professional RECD Installation Matters

RECD for DG setA should be treated as an engineered emission-control system rather than simply another exhaust component. Correct selection, installation, testing, and maintenance can help ensure that the system works as intended.

If you are planning a retrofit, it is important to work with a qualified and appropriately certified RECD supplier or installation agency and verify that the selected system is applicable to your particular DG set.

FAQs

What are the most common RECD installation mistakes?

Common mistakes include selecting an unsuitable device, incorrect positioning, poor exhaust connections, ignoring back pressure, skipping post-installation checks, and neglecting maintenance.

Can RECD be installed on every DG set?

No. RECD applicability depends on factors such as the DG engine/engine family, power range, applicable requirements, and the certification range of the particular RECD.

Why is exhaust back pressure important during RECD installation?

An unsuitable or incorrectly installed RECD can increase exhaust restriction. Back pressure should therefore remain within the limits specified by the engine and RECD manufacturers.

Does RECD installation eliminate the need for DG-set maintenance?

No. Regular engine and RECD maintenance are both important. A poorly maintained engine can affect overall emission-control performance.

What should I check before buying an RECD?

Check the RECD's certification, applicable engine or engine-family range, power range, technical specifications, installation requirements, maintenance instructions, and supplier support.

Conclusion

Avoiding common installation mistakes is essential for reliable RECD performance. Incorrect device selection, poor exhaust connections, unsuitable positioning, excessive back pressure, and inadequate testing can create unnecessary problems. Before installing an RECD, always verify DG-set compatibility, technical requirements, certification documents, and installation conditions. Proper installation followed by regular maintenance can support effective emission-control performance and reliable DG-set operation.
