“CPCB-approved RECD for DG sets”The phrase is commonly used when people search for retrofit emission-control solutions. However, buyers should understand what certification and applicability actually mean before purchasing an RECD.

CPCB approvedAn emission-control device should not be selected solely because an advertisement uses the words “.” The buyer should verify the relevant technical documentation, certification details, engine applicability, and current regulatory requirements.

What Is RECD?

RECD means Retrofit Emission Control Device.

It is designed to be installed on suitable existing diesel generator engines to control targeted exhaust emissions.

The device becomes part of the generator's exhaust system and must therefore be technically compatible with the engine.

What Does CPCB Have to Do With RECD?

CPCB has established procedures relating to the certification and applicability of retrofit emission-control devices.

Its published RECD procedure describes type approval and conformity-of-production requirements and explains that RECD devices are developed and certified for already-certified DG engine families.

This is important because certification is not simply a statement that an RECD can be installed on every diesel generator.

Why Is Engine Applicability Important?

An RECD is designed around particular technical characteristics.

CPCB's procedure discusses RECD families and the engine characteristics used to determine applicability.

Therefore, buyers should provide complete engine information when requesting an RECD.

Important details include:

Engine make
Engine model
Engine family
Engine power
DG capacity
Manufacturing details
Fuel type
Exhaust configuration

What Does the CPCB Certified Manufacturer List Show?

CPCB publishes a list of manufacturers certified for RECDs applicable to diesel genset engines up to 800 kW. The list identifies different manufacturers and shows different engine-power ranges and applicability categories.

This demonstrates that RECD applicability varies from one device to another.

For buyers, this means that checking the specific device and its applicable engine range is essential.

Should Buyers Ask for Documents?

Yes.

Before purchasing, buyers should request relevant documentation.

This can include:

Technical specifications
Certification documents
Applicable engine range
Test information
Installation instructions
Maintenance instructions
Warranty information

Documentation should correspond to the actual product being offered.

Is “CPCB Approved” Enough?

No.

A general marketing statement does not provide enough technical information to establish whether a device is suitable for a particular DG set.

The buyer should ask:

Which engine family is the device certified for?

What power range does the certification cover?

Which certification agency performed the relevant testing?

What are the installation requirements?

What documentation is provided?

These questions help create a clearer technical picture.

Why Does Installation Matter?

Even a suitable RECD needs correct installation.

The device becomes part of the exhaust system, so exhaust flow, temperature, mounting, and back pressure need to be considered.

Installation should follow the manufacturer's instructions and should provide appropriate access for inspection and maintenance.

What About Generator Maintenance?

A properly maintained engine is important for emission control.

Regular maintenance should address:

Fuel filters
Air filters
Engine oil
Injectors
Cooling system
Exhaust system
Battery
Engine performance

If the generator has an underlying mechanical problem, that issue should be addressed separately.

Can RECD Guarantee Compliance?

Compliance should be evaluated against the applicable regulatory requirements for the particular DG set.

An RECD should not be described as automatically making every generator compliant under every circumstance.

The actual situation depends on the generator, device, installation, operating conditions, applicable regulations, and required documentation.

What Should Organizations Consider Before Buying?

Organizations should compare products based on technical suitability rather than only price.

Important factors include:

Certified applicability
Engine compatibility
Power range
Installation requirements
Maintenance
Documentation
Supplier support
Warranty

This approach can help avoid purchasing a device that does not match the generator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should “CPCB-approved RECD” mean to a buyer?

The buyer should verify the actual certification and applicability information rather than relying only on the phrase.

Can an RECD work on any DG set?

No. Applicability depends on the device and engine characteristics.

Does CPCB publish RECD information?

Yes. CPCB publishes information concerning certified RECD manufacturers and applicability ranges.

Should buyers keep certification documents?

Yes. Relevant technical and certification records should be maintained.

Conclusion

Buying a CPCB-related RECD requires careful verification. The most important point is that certification and applicability should be considered in relation to the specific DG engine.

Buyers should verify official information, review technical documents, confirm engine compatibility, use appropriate installation practices, and maintain the equipment correctly.

This makes the RECD purchasing process more transparent and technically informed.
