Retrofit Emission Control Device (RECD) on a diesel generator setInstalling a requires careful technical planning. An RECD becomes part of the generator's exhaust system, so its selection and installation need to match the engine and operating conditions.

For businesses and organizations operating DG sets, understanding CPCB-related requirements before installation can help avoid compatibility problems and unnecessary modifications.

Why Are RECD Installation Requirements Important?

A DG set is not simply an engine connected to an electrical alternator. Its combustion system, exhaust system, cooling system, fuel system, and operating load all affect its performance.

When an emission-control device is added, it interacts with the exhaust system. Therefore, installation must be approached as an engineering activity.

CPCB's published RECD procedure establishes technical and certification requirements for retrofit devices and links their applicability to specific engine families and power ranges.

What Should Be Checked Before Installation?

Before installing an RECD, the first step is to collect complete information about the DG set.

Important information includes:

DG-set capacity
Engine make
Engine model
Engine family
Engine manufacturing details
Fuel type
Exhaust configuration
Rated power
Typical operating load
Existing exhaust equipment

This information helps determine whether the proposed RECD is appropriate.

How Does Engine Family Affect RECD Selection?

Engine family is important because retrofit certification is not necessarily universal.

CPCB's procedure explains that RECD devices and families are developed and certified for already-certified DG engine families and that their type-approval range is associated with the applicable engine family.

This means that simply choosing an RECD because its advertised capacity appears similar to the generator's capacity may not be sufficient.

What About Exhaust Temperature?

Exhaust temperature can be an important consideration in emission-control applications.

Different generators can have different exhaust conditions depending on engine design, operating load, ambient conditions, and maintenance condition.

Therefore, technical assessment should consider the actual operating characteristics of the DG set rather than relying only on theoretical specifications.

What Is Back Pressure?

Back pressure refers to resistance against exhaust gases flowing out of the engine.

When an exhaust-control device is installed, the exhaust system needs to remain within the engine manufacturer's acceptable operating limits.

For this reason, RECD installation should account for exhaust flow and back-pressure requirements.

A technically unsuitable installation could negatively affect engine operation.

What Is the Typical Installation Process?

Although the exact process depends on the RECD design, a typical project may involve several stages.

First, the DG set is inspected and its technical information is collected.

Second, the exhaust system is evaluated.

Third, a suitable RECD is selected according to engine compatibility and applicable requirements.

Fourth, the installation location and mounting arrangement are prepared.

Fifth, the device is integrated into the exhaust line.

Finally, the DG set is operated and checked to ensure that the complete system is functioning correctly.

Why Is Professional Installation Important?

The exhaust system operates at high temperatures and carries combustion gases. Incorrect installation can create safety, operational, or maintenance issues.

Professional installation also helps ensure that the device is positioned correctly and that the exhaust system remains accessible for future inspection.

What Maintenance Is Required?

After installation, both the DG set and RECD should be maintained.

DG maintenance may include:

Engine-oil inspection
Air-filter replacement
Fuel-system checks
Injector inspection
Cooling-system maintenance
Battery inspection
Exhaust inspection

The RECD should be inspected according to its manufacturer's instructions.

What Does CPCB Certification Mean for Buyers?

CPCB's published list provides information on certified RECD manufacturers and the ranges for which listed devices are applicable. The list shows that different RECD products can have different power ranges and applicability to Phase I or Phase II engines.

Therefore, buyers should ask for the relevant technical and certification information for the particular generator rather than relying on a generic “CPCB approved” claim.

What Documentation Should Be Maintained?

Organizations should maintain documentation related to the DG set and RECD.

Useful records may include:

DG-set specifications
Engine information
RECD model information
Certification documents
Installation details
Maintenance records
Testing records where applicable

Proper documentation can help during future technical inspections or compliance reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can RECD be installed on an existing generator?

Yes, retrofit systems are designed for suitable existing DG engines, subject to applicable requirements.

Is every RECD suitable for every generator?

No. Engine family, power range, technical characteristics, and certification applicability must be checked.

Why should exhaust back pressure be checked?

The exhaust system must remain compatible with the engine's operating requirements.

Does installation eliminate the need for DG maintenance?

No. Generator maintenance remains necessary.

Conclusion

RECD installation should be planned carefully using the DG-set's actual technical information. Engine family, power range, exhaust conditions, installation arrangement, maintenance requirements, and applicable CPCB information should all be reviewed.
