Diesel generator (DG) sets are commonly used for backup and power-generation requirements across industries, commercial buildings, hospitals, offices, and other facilities. Since diesel combustion produces exhaust emissions, appropriate emission-control measures are important for managing pollutants from DG-set operations.

Retrofit Emission Control Device (RECD)A is an emission-control system designed to be installed on an existing diesel generator. When selecting or installing an RECD, DG-set owners need to consider the applicable environmental requirements, technical specifications, and relevant guidance issued by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

CPCB requirements for RECDUnderstanding the can help organizations evaluate an appropriate emission-control solution for their DG sets.

What Is a Retrofit Emission Control Device?

Retrofit Emission Control DeviceRECD stands for . It is a system fitted to an existing diesel generator to help control pollutants in its exhaust gases.

The device is generally integrated into the DG-set exhaust system. Depending on the technology, an RECD may help control particulate matter and other targeted pollutants before exhaust gases are released into the atmosphere.

The appropriate device depends on the generator's capacity, engine specifications, exhaust conditions, operating pattern, and applicable requirements.

Why Are CPCB Requirements Important for RECD?

CPCB requirements provide an important reference for organizations dealing with air-emission control from diesel generator sets.

Before installing an RECD, DG-set owners should determine which environmental provisions apply to their particular installation. This can depend on factors such as:

DG-set capacity
Engine specifications
Application of the generator
Location of the installation
Applicable emission standards
Operating conditions
Current regulatory requirements

Checking the latest applicable provisions is important because environmental requirements can be updated over time.

What Should Be Checked Before Installing an RECD?

Selecting an emission-control device should begin with a technical assessment of the DG set.

1. DG-Set Capacity

The capacity of the generator should be confirmed before selecting the device. The RECD must be suitable for the generator's operating range and exhaust conditions.

2. Engine Specifications

Engine make, model, fuel system, and other technical details can influence the selection of an appropriate emission-control technology.

3. Exhaust Gas Conditions

Important exhaust parameters may include:

Exhaust gas flow
Exhaust temperature
Back pressure
Exhaust pipe dimensions
Operating load

These factors should be evaluated to ensure compatibility between the RECD and the DG set.

4. Applicable Emission Requirements

The applicable emission requirements should be identified for the particular DG-set installation. The selected RECD should be evaluated against the requirements relevant to that application.

5. Technical Documentation

DG-set owners should review the available documentation for the proposed device, including technical specifications, testing information, installation instructions, maintenance requirements, and applicable certification or approval documentation.

How Does RECD Help With Emission Control?

During diesel combustion, the engine produces exhaust gases containing pollutants such as particulate matter, carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides.

An RECD is installed along the exhaust path. Exhaust gases pass through the emission-control system, where its components treat targeted pollutants before the gases are discharged.

The pollutants controlled and the level of emission reduction depend on the specific technology, device design, DG-set condition, and operating conditions.

Therefore, an RECD should be selected according to the actual technical requirements of the generator rather than assuming that every device provides the same performance.

Installation Requirements for RECD

Proper installation is important for safe and effective operation.

A typical installation process may include:

Inspecting the existing DG set.
Checking engine and generator specifications.
Evaluating the exhaust system.
Selecting a compatible RECD.
Installing the device according to manufacturer instructions.
Checking exhaust connections and mounting.
Evaluating exhaust back pressure.
Inspecting the system after installation.

The installation should follow the manufacturer's technical instructions and the applicable environmental requirements.

Importance of Exhaust Back Pressure

Exhaust back pressure is an important consideration when installing an emission-control device.

If an emission-control system creates excessive restriction in the exhaust, it may affect engine operation. Therefore, the selected RECD should be designed and installed with appropriate exhaust-flow and back-pressure considerations.

A technical assessment before installation can help identify potential exhaust-system issues.

RECD Maintenance Requirements

Installing an RECD is not the final step. Regular inspection and maintenance are necessary to keep the system in suitable operating condition.

Maintenance may include:

Checking for particulate or soot accumulation
Inspecting exhaust connections
Checking for leakage
Monitoring back pressure
Inspecting the device for physical damage
Cleaning components where required
Following the manufacturer's service schedule

The exact maintenance procedure depends on the type of RECD and its operating conditions.

DG-Set Maintenance and RECD

An RECD cannot replace regular DG-set servicing.

A poorly maintained engine may produce excessive emissions because of problems such as:

Dirty air filters
Poor fuel delivery
Incomplete combustion
Worn engine components
Poor lubrication
Cooling-system problems

Regular engine maintenance should therefore be performed along with RECD inspection and servicing.

What Are the Benefits of Following Applicable CPCB Requirements?

Following the requirements applicable to the DG-set installation can help organizations maintain a structured approach to emission management.

Potential benefits include:

Better Emission Management

A suitable emission-control solution can help manage targeted pollutants from DG-set exhaust.

Appropriate Equipment Selection

Reviewing technical and environmental requirements helps organizations select equipment suitable for their specific generator.

Better Documentation

Maintaining relevant technical and installation records can make it easier to manage the emission-control system.

Proper Maintenance Planning

Understanding the requirements and manufacturer's instructions helps organizations plan regular inspections and servicing.

Support for Environmental Compliance

Appropriate emission-control measures can support efforts to meet applicable environmental requirements.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

DG-set owners should avoid selecting or installing an RECD without evaluating the actual requirements of their generator.

Common mistakes include:

Choosing an RECD without checking DG capacity
Ignoring exhaust flow and temperature
Failing to consider back pressure
Not reviewing technical documentation
Installing the device incorrectly
Neglecting maintenance
Assuming every RECD provides the same emission reduction
Treating RECD as a replacement for engine servicing
Relying on outdated regulatory information

Checking the latest applicable CPCB provisions before installation is an important step.

How to Select an RECD for Your DG Set?

A systematic selection process can make the installation easier.

First, identify the DG-set capacity and engine specifications. Next, evaluate exhaust conditions and operating patterns. Then, compare suitable emission-control technologies and review their technical documentation.

The selected device should be compatible with the generator and appropriate for the pollutants it is designed to control.

Finally, verify the applicable environmental requirements and ensure that installation and maintenance can be carried out according to the required procedures.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
