A diesel generator is more than just an engine that produces electricity. It is an integrated system in which the diesel engine provides mechanical power and the alternator converts that mechanical energy into electrical output. Understanding this relationship becomes especially useful when planning upgrades or emission-control solutions for an existing generator.

RECD for DG SetWhen businesses consider an , the primary focus is naturally on exhaust emissions and retrofit compatibility. However, understanding the complete DG set configuration—including the alternator, engine, exhaust and control systems—helps create a more practical approach to retrofit planning.

What Is an Alternator in a Diesel Generator?

An alternator is the electrical-generation component of a diesel generator. The diesel engine rotates the alternator, and the alternator converts that mechanical rotation into electrical energy.

A typical DG set includes a diesel engine, alternator, cooling and exhaust systems, fuel system and control panel. BIS material on DG sets also describes the alternator as the component responsible for the electrical-generation portion of the system.

While the alternator handles electrical generation, the engine's combustion process produces exhaust gases. This distinction is important when discussing retrofit emission-control systems.

How Does a Diesel Generator Alternator Work?

The basic operating process can be understood in a few steps.

First, diesel fuel is burned inside the engine to produce mechanical power. The engine crankshaft transfers this rotational energy to the alternator.

Inside the alternator, rotating and stationary electromagnetic components work together to generate alternating electrical current. The generated electricity is then regulated and supplied to the connected electrical load.

The alternator therefore plays a central role in determining the electrical output of the DG set, while the engine is responsible for providing the mechanical input.

What Is the Difference Between the Engine and Alternator?

The engine and alternator perform two different but connected jobs.

Diesel engine: Converts the chemical energy of diesel fuel into mechanical energy.

Alternator: Converts the mechanical energy supplied by the engine into electrical energy.

RECD for DG SetThis distinction is useful when considering an because an RECD is associated with the engine's exhaust emissions rather than the alternator's electrical-generation function.

The retrofit device is integrated into the exhaust system, while the alternator continues performing its electrical-generation role.

Where Does RECD Fit Into a DG Set?

A retrofit emission control device is installed as part of the exhaust-side emission-control arrangement.

The Central Pollution Control Board has published a specific procedure for emission-compliance testing of retrofit emission control devices for diesel power-generating-set engines up to 800 kW gross mechanical power.

RECD for DG SetThis means that when evaluating an , the engine and exhaust configuration are critical considerations.

The alternator remains an important part of the overall DG set, but it is not the component where the RECD performs its emission-control function.

Why Engine Information Matters More for RECD Selection

Two DG sets may have similar electrical ratings but still have different engine configurations.

For an RECD retrofit, technical information such as the engine make, model, engine family, power range and exhaust configuration can therefore be important.

CPCB's RECD procedure establishes testing and compliance requirements for applicable diesel power-generating-set engines.

A buyer should therefore avoid selecting an RECD based only on the generator's kVA rating.

A proper technical assessment should consider the actual engine and exhaust arrangement before the retrofit system is finalised.

How Alternator Performance Relates to Generator Operation

Although the alternator is not directly responsible for exhaust emissions, its operation is closely linked with the engine.

When the electrical load changes, the engine has to respond to the corresponding mechanical demand. Generator controls help maintain appropriate voltage and frequency while the engine and alternator work together.

This is one reason why the overall operating condition of a DG set matters during technical evaluation.

An emission-control retrofit should not be considered separately from the generator's normal operating requirements. The engine, exhaust system, controls and electrical load all form part of the operating environment.

Load Conditions and RECD Planning

DG sets rarely operate at exactly the same load all the time. Depending on the application, a generator may experience low, medium or high loading conditions.

These operating conditions can influence engine performance and exhaust characteristics.

RECD for DG SetWhen planning an , it is therefore useful to understand how the generator normally operates rather than relying only on its nameplate rating.

For example, a generator used for emergency backup may operate differently from one used for regular prime-power applications.

Understanding the actual operating profile can help engineers assess the retrofit requirements more effectively.

Key DG Set Components to Review Before Retrofit

Before installing an RECD, it is useful to document the major components of the generator.

1. Diesel Engine

Record the manufacturer, model, power rating and other relevant technical information.

2. Alternator

Identify the alternator rating and configuration. This helps establish the overall electrical characteristics of the generator.

3. Exhaust System

Inspect the exhaust pipe, silencer, outlet position and available space for retrofit equipment.

4. Control System

Check the generator controller and relevant monitoring arrangements.

5. Fuel System

The fuel system and engine condition can influence combustion performance and should be considered during technical assessment.

6. Installation Environment

The location of the DG set can affect accessibility, exhaust routing, maintenance and equipment protection.

Why Exhaust Configuration Deserves Attention

The alternator may be responsible for electrical output, but the exhaust system is where an RECD is physically integrated.

Therefore, an installation survey should identify the exhaust outlet, pipe diameter, silencer arrangement, available mounting space and potential routing requirements.

An incorrectly planned installation can create avoidable difficulties during commissioning or maintenance.

This becomes particularly important when retrofitting an existing DG set because the available space and exhaust arrangement may have been designed before the RECD was considered.

Choosing an RECD for an Existing DG Set

A good retrofit decision should start with technical information rather than simply choosing a device based on price or physical size.

The following points can be useful:

Identify the exact engine and DG set details.
Check the applicable engine power range.
Review the existing exhaust configuration.
Understand the generator's typical operating load.
Verify applicable certification and testing documentation.
Assess installation space and maintenance access.
Confirm that the selected system is appropriate for the intended application.

CPCB publishes technical documentation and information related to RECD compliance and testing, making its resources useful when evaluating retrofit requirements.

For broader DG-set and alternator standards, the Bureau of Indian Standards also provides information on standards covering reciprocating internal-combustion-engine-driven generating sets and alternators.

Engine, Alternator and RECD: Understanding the Relationship

It is useful to think of the DG set as a connected system:

Diesel engine → Mechanical power → Alternator → Electrical output

At the same time:

Diesel engine → Combustion → Exhaust gases → Emission-control system

The alternator is therefore essential for electricity generation, while the RECD addresses the emission-control side of the generator.

Understanding both pathways helps facility managers and procurement teams communicate more effectively with DG-set and emission-control specialists.

Final Thoughts

A diesel generator's alternator is a key component responsible for converting the engine's mechanical energy into electrical power. However, when an existing generator is being evaluated for emission-control retrofitting, the engine and exhaust system become particularly important.

RECD for DG SetAn should therefore be selected after reviewing the complete technical configuration rather than looking only at the generator's electrical rating.
