The Dubai Metro Blue Line is one of the biggest upcoming additions to Dubai’s public transportation network. Designed to connect several rapidly growing residential, business, academic, and tourism areas, the new line will improve access to parts of Dubai that currently have limited metro connectivity.

The Blue Line is planned as a 30-kilometre route with 14 stations, including connections to the existing Red and Green Lines. Construction is underway, with the official opening targeted for 9 September 2029.

What Is the Dubai Metro Blue Line?

The Dubai Metro Blue Line will become a major new metro route linking important communities across the eastern and central parts of Dubai. It has been designed to integrate with the existing Dubai Metro network and provide easier journeys between residential communities, educational institutions, technology hubs, shopping areas, and major development zones.

According to Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), the project covers approximately 30 km, including 15.5 km of underground track and 14.5 km of elevated track. The route will include 14 stations and three major interchange points.

The project is expected to make public transportation more accessible to communities that are currently not directly served by the Red or Green Metro Lines.

Dubai Metro Blue Line Opening Date

The planned opening date for the Dubai Metro Blue Line is 9 September 2029. Construction began in 2025, and RTA has continued to report progress on the project.

In May 2026, tunnelling works for the Blue Line were officially launched. RTA stated that the project has an investment of more than AED 20.5 billion and is progressing toward its planned completion.

Because the line is still under construction, passengers cannot currently use the Blue Line. The existing Dubai Metro network currently consists of the Red and Green Lines, while the Blue Line is being developed as a major future expansion.

Dubai Metro Blue Line Route

The Blue Line consists of two main routes that meet at International City 1.

The first route starts from Creek Interchange Station on the Green Line in Al Jaddaf. From there, it travels through Dubai Festival City, Dubai Creek Harbour, Ras Al Khor Industrial Area, and International City. It then continues toward International City 2 and 3, Dubai Silicon Oasis, and finally Dubai Academic City.

This section covers approximately 21 km and includes 10 stations.

The second route starts at Centrepoint Interchange Station on the Red Line in Al Rashidiya. It passes through Mirdif and Al Warqa before connecting with International City 1. This section is approximately 9 km long and includes four stations.

Areas Served by the Blue Line

One of the biggest advantages of the Blue Line is the number of important communities it will connect. The route is designed to serve nine key areas, including:

Dubai Creek Harbour
Dubai Festival City
Ras Al Khor
International City
Dubai Silicon Oasis
Dubai Academic City
Mirdif
Al Warqa
Al Jaddaf

The line will provide better public transportation access to residential communities as well as major academic and economic areas.

RTA estimates that the areas served by the Blue Line will have a combined population of around one million people under Dubai's long-term urban development plans.

Dubai Metro Blue Line Stations

The Blue Line will have 14 stations in total. These include interchange stations that allow passengers to move between the Blue Line and the existing Dubai Metro network.

The three major interchange locations are:

Creek Station

Creek Station will connect the Blue Line with the existing Green Line. It is located in the Al Jaddaf area and will provide an important connection for passengers traveling between eastern Dubai and other parts of the city.

Centrepoint Station

Centrepoint will connect the Blue Line with the Red Line. This interchange will be particularly useful for passengers traveling from areas such as Mirdif and Al Warqa toward central Dubai and other destinations served by the Red Line.

International City 1

International City 1 will serve as a major interchange within the Blue Line itself. RTA describes this as a major underground interchange station designed to handle a significant volume of passengers.

Dubai Creek Harbour Iconic Station

One of the most exciting features of the Blue Line is the planned iconic station at Dubai Creek Harbour.

The station is being designed as an architectural landmark and is intended to complement the modern development surrounding Dubai Creek Harbour. RTA has stated that the station will be designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM), the architectural firm associated with major landmarks including Burj Khalifa.

The station is expected to become more than just a transportation facility. Its distinctive architecture is intended to contribute to the identity of Dubai Creek Harbour and the wider Dubai skyline.

World’s Highest Metro Station

Another notable feature associated with the Blue Line is its iconic Emaar station. RTA says the station will stand approximately 74 metres high, making it the world's highest metro station.

This landmark station demonstrates Dubai's focus on combining transportation infrastructure with distinctive architecture and modern urban development.

Underground and Elevated Sections

The Blue Line will use a combination of underground and elevated tracks.

The total route is approximately 30 km, with 15.5 km underground and 14.5 km elevated. This combination allows the metro to pass through different types of urban environments while connecting established communities and newer development areas.

The project includes multiple underground stations as well as elevated stations, creating a modern transportation corridor across the areas it serves.

Dubai Metro Blue Line and Dubai International Airport

The Blue Line will also improve connections between Dubai International Airport and several communities along the route.

RTA expects direct journeys between the airport and areas served by the Blue Line to take approximately 20 minutes in relevant connections. The wider project is expected to make travel between the airport and communities such as Mirdif, Al Warqa, International City, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Academic City, Ras Al Khor, Dubai Creek Harbour, and Dubai Festival City more convenient.

This could be particularly useful for residents, students, employees, and visitors staying in areas east of central Dubai.

Expected Number of Passengers

The Blue Line has been designed to support Dubai's growing population and increasing demand for public transportation.

RTA expects the line to serve around 200,000 passengers per day by 2030, with daily ridership projected to rise to approximately 320,000 passengers by 2040.

The line will also have substantial passenger-handling capacity, helping Dubai accommodate future population growth without relying entirely on private vehicles.

Benefits of the Dubai Metro Blue Line

The Blue Line is expected to provide several benefits for residents and visitors.

First, it will improve public transportation access to communities that currently have fewer metro options. Residents of Dubai Silicon Oasis, Mirdif, Al Warqa, International City, and Academic City will have better connections to the wider Dubai Metro network.

Second, the Blue Line will make interchange between the Red and Green Lines easier. This will create a more integrated metro network and give passengers additional route options.

Third, the project is expected to help reduce traffic congestion along the corridors it serves. RTA has stated that the Blue Line is expected to contribute to a 20% reduction in traffic congestion along relevant corridors.

Blue Line and Dubai's Future

The project is closely connected to Dubai's long-term urban development plans. It supports the objectives of the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan and the Dubai Economic Agenda D33.

The Blue Line is intended to encourage sustainable transportation and support the development of communities where essential services and facilities can be reached more easily through public transport.

It will also support areas such as Dubai Silicon Oasis, which is an important centre for technology, innovation, and knowledge-based businesses.

Will the Blue Line Replace the Red or Green Line?

No. The Blue Line will not replace the existing Red or Green Lines.

Instead, it will expand the Dubai Metro network and connect with both existing lines. Passengers will be able to transfer between the Blue Line and the Red and Green Lines at designated interchange stations.

This means the Blue Line will effectively add new travel possibilities rather than operating as a separate system.

Dubai Metro Blue Line Map

The Dubai Metro Blue Line map will be useful for understanding the new route, stations, and interchange points once the line becomes operational. It will show how the Blue Line connects with Creek on the Green Line and Centrepoint on the Red Line, as well as the major communities along the new route.

For current metro journeys, passengers should continue using the official RTA metro map and journey planner, since the Blue Line is still under construction. RTA provides an online journey planner for checking routes, stations, timetables, and transport options.

Conclusion

The Dubai Metro Blue Line is set to become an important part of Dubai's future transportation network. With a planned length of 30 km, 14 stations, connections to the Red and Green Lines, and service to major communities such as Dubai Creek Harbour, International City, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Mirdif, Al Warqa, and Academic City, the project will significantly improve connectivity.

With its planned opening on 9 September 2029, the Blue Line is expected to provide faster and more convenient public transportation while supporting Dubai's long-term urban development goals. Its iconic stations, extensive underground sections, and strong connections with the existing metro network make it one of Dubai's most significant upcoming infrastructure projects.
