Dust is an industry-wide problem in mining, construction, manufacturing and material handling. It generally causes poor air quality, low visibility, and settles on equipment and is inhaled by laborers; it is a source of toxic airborne particulate. Dust suppression prevents dust at the source, meaning a cleaner workplace much more conducive to safe and efficient industrial work.

What is a dust suppression system?

Dust suppression systems apply dust control efforts prior to dust emission by spraying fine mists of water, fogging, foam, or proprietary binding agents. When designed properly, the droplets produced by mist systems are much smaller than in conventional water spraying, and merge with dust particles in the air to help their descent.

It can be deployed around crushers and conveyor belts, loading bays, demolition zones and other dust-creating sources. The design will vary according to the availability of site conditions, dust, character of materials, and available water.

Key Benefits of a Dust Suppression System

Some benefits of an industrial dust suppression system are:

Dust control: Promotes a cleaner work environment and cleaner air.
Resulting in better worker health: Less exposure to dust particulate matter that causes respiratory irritation or other health conditions.
Water Efficiency: Does not soak large areas unnecessarily; treats only where there is dust.
Cleaner equipment: Less dust on equipment, vehicles and stored materials.
Greater visibility: Aiding workers to be safe in areas affected by dust.
Less human intervention: It can automatically be turned on with sensors or timers when dust-producing processes begin.
Environmental support: Support to enterprises in dust emission control and achieving necessary Environmental standards.

Industrial Applications of Dust Suppression Systems

The industrial processes that create dust are different. The issues are taken up early on if the system has been put in place properly.

Mining and quarrying: Controls dust at crushers, conveyor belts, stockpiles, and haul roads.
Construction and Demolition: Limits airborne dust when excavating, cutting concrete, handling debris and demolishing buildings.
Manufacturing plants: Dust from grinding, cutting, crushing, and bulk handling of materials.
Warehouses and loading bays: Less dust during loading and unloading, and movement of bulk materials, aids the worker and goods stored.
Cement and aggregate facilities: Dust control at transfer points where material is switched, at screening units and processing areas.

Types of Industrial Dust Suppression Solutions

The right technology will also depend on the type of application and dust created.

High Pressure Misting Systems: Produce droplets of extremely fine size and capture airborne dust at the source.
Foggers: An industrial means of spraying water droplets to cause airborne particles to drop out of the air.
Water spray: Apply water to surfaces and materials to prevent dust.
Foam systems: A foam product that can be more effective than water for controlling dust in certain conditions.
Chemical dust suppressants: Application of dust-binding agents to unpaved roads, stockpiles, etc.

How to Choose the Right Dust Suppression System

Consider your dust sources, where your site lies, your production and moisture sensitivity when choosing a system. Maintenance, automation, water use, pump capacity and installation of nozzles. For larger facilities, a tailored design can cover several dust-generating sources while not wasting water.

Routine checks of the pumps as well as nozzle cleaning ensure optimum performance.
