1. The single population in Japan is changing its consumption logic

1.1 Past: Prioritizing the Convenience of Products

For a long time, the Japanese market has primarily focused on time-saving and labor-saving products. Single-serve instant meals and simple household appliances all share the core selling point of reducing household chores. For single individuals, "convenience" is the top priority when making purchases.

1.2 The Present: Convenience is the foundation, not the entirety

The declining birth rate and increasing number of single-person households persist. Today's single consumers won't simply buy something just because it works well. Convenience is merely the threshold; beyond that, products must also provide emotional value.

2. Two Core Priorities in Single Consumption: Ease of Use and Self-Satisfaction

2.1 Hassle-free usability, designed for single-person living

Designed for single-person living, it prioritizes ease of use over excessive features. Compact in size, simple to operate, and easy to clean, it avoids forcing users to adapt to complex functionalities. There's no need to pay for redundant designs meant for multi-user scenarios, perfectly aligning with the pace of solo living.

2.2 "Selfness," Self-Expression in Consumption

Single life lacks interpersonal constraints at the family level,大人のおもちゃ, making consumption a way to care for oneself. Choosing favorite scents, compact tea sets, and ambient lighting isn’t to impress others but to satisfy personal preferences. Consumption is no longer about sustaining life but about enjoying it.

3. The Social Context Behind the Shift in Consumer Mindset

3.1 No Longer Pursuing the "Standard Life"

Traditional Japanese society follows a fixed life template: marriage and family formation. An increasing number of people are deviating from this standard and no longer adhering to societal expectations when shopping. There's no need to purchase large household items suited for a family—personal feelings take precedence.

3.2 Reject excessive consumption and prioritize inner feelings

Compared to hoarding large quantities of items, modern single individuals prefer to spend money on small items that continuously bring them joy. They streamline their possessions, keeping only those that truly align with their lifestyle.

4. Summary: Consumption is a small way to please oneself

4.1 Convenience as the Foundation, Comfort as the Priority

Convenience remains important, but it alone is not enough to captivate consumers. Future products must balance practicality with emotional value.

4.2 Embrace Your Lifestyle

The essence of single consumption is the autonomous choice of lifestyle. Free from the influence of others' opinions, it involves selecting items that suit one's preferences to create a comfortable and effortless daily life.
