Poultry Production Supports Feed Demand

13 million tonnesEurope has an established poultry production base, creating consistent requirements for nutritionally balanced feed. The European Commission describes the EU as one of the world's largest poultry-meat producers, with annual poultry-meat production exceeding .

2.2% in January 2026Recent production trends also indicate continued demand for poultry products. The European Commission reported that EU poultry-meat production increased by compared with the corresponding previous period, although growth varied between individual countries.

This creates a direct need for reliable supplies of feed ingredients, compound feed, nutritional additives, and specialized formulations.

Broiler Feed Remains Important

Broiler production requires feed formulations designed to support efficient growth, feed conversion, muscle development, and overall bird health.

Feed manufacturers are increasingly focusing on precise nutrient balancing to help producers achieve consistent results. Energy levels, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, enzymes, and other components can be adjusted according to bird age, genetics, production systems, and performance objectives.

Layer Feed Supports Egg Production

Layer feed represents another important segment because nutritional requirements change throughout the egg-laying cycle.

Balanced formulations can help support egg production, shell quality, bird health, and longevity. Producers can use different feed formulations during pullet development, peak laying, and later production stages to better match nutritional requirements.

Protein Supply Remains a Strategic Issue

Protein ingredients are particularly important in poultry nutrition, but Europe remains dependent on imports for high-protein feed materials.

European Commission's latest analysis of EU protein supply74% of high-protein feed used in the EU is importedThe states that , with soya meal among the key imported protein sources.

This dependence encourages greater attention to domestic protein crops, alternative ingredients, sourcing diversification, and improved feed efficiency.

Feed Efficiency Becomes More Important

Feed represents a major operating consideration for poultry producers, making efficient conversion of feed into meat or eggs essential.

Advanced nutrition strategies can help reduce nutrient losses and improve feed utilization. Precision formulation, enzyme supplementation, amino-acid balancing, and phase feeding can allow producers to provide nutrients more closely aligned with birds' requirements.

The MarkNtel Advisors assessment identifies feed efficiency and nutritional optimization as important areas of development across European poultry production.

Feed Additives Support Nutritional Performance

Feed additives are increasingly used to perform nutritional, technological, sensory, and zootechnical functions.

FEFAC's guidance on feed additivesAccording to, additives can support functions such as nutrient balancing, feed preservation, pellet quality, digestion, and animal health. Some zootechnical additives can also support digestion and potentially contribute to reducing environmental impacts.

This creates opportunities for manufacturers developing enzymes, probiotics, amino acids, antioxidants, minerals, and other specialized nutritional solutions.

Sustainability Influences Feed Formulation

Environmental considerations are becoming increasingly important across Europe's livestock and feed industries. Feed production contributes significantly to the environmental footprint of animal products, making ingredient sourcing and formulation important areas for improvement.

This type of standardized assessment can help feed manufacturers identify opportunities to reduce environmental impacts and improve transparency across supply chains.

Circular Feed Creates New Opportunities

Circular feed strategies are attracting greater attention as Europe explores ways to use resources more efficiently. Certain safe and suitable by-products and co-products can potentially be incorporated into animal-feed systems, reducing resource waste and improving circularity.

FEFAC has highlighted circular feed as an important element of the European feed industry's sustainability strategy, while also calling for regulatory developments that can facilitate responsible use of alternative feed resources.

For poultry-feed manufacturers, this can encourage research into alternative ingredients while maintaining nutritional quality and safety.

Additive Supply Chains Require Greater Resilience

Europe's dependence on imported nutritional additives is another strategic consideration. FEFAC reported in 2025 that the EU is highly dependent on third countries for vitamins and amino acids used in animal nutrition, with China holding a particularly dominant position for some products.

This dependency can encourage manufacturers to diversify suppliers, strengthen inventories, explore alternative sourcing, and develop more resilient procurement strategies.

Cereal Ingredients Remain Essential

Cereals provide important energy components in poultry feed. Wheat, maize, barley, and other grains can be incorporated into formulations according to nutritional requirements, availability, and price conditions.

Changes in grain production, weather patterns, transportation costs, and international trade can therefore affect feed formulation decisions.

Manufacturers increasingly need flexible formulation capabilities to respond to changing ingredient availability while maintaining nutritional consistency.

Precision Nutrition Improves Resource Use

Precision nutrition allows feed manufacturers and poultry producers to tailor diets more closely to animal requirements.

Instead of providing excess nutrients, formulations can be adjusted according to age, production stage, genetics, health status, and environmental conditions. This can improve feed efficiency while potentially reducing nutrient excretion.

Such strategies align with broader European objectives around resource efficiency and sustainable livestock production.

Poultry Feed Demand Benefits from Consumer Preferences

Consumer demand for poultry meat and eggs influences the broader feed ecosystem. Poultry is widely consumed across Europe and remains an important source of animal protein.

The European Commission's agricultural outlook indicates that poultry feed demand could benefit from continued consumer demand for poultry products, including interest in slow-growing chicken production.

This can create additional requirements for specialized feeding strategies suited to different production systems.

Animal Health and Biosecurity Remain Priorities

Feed quality is closely connected with poultry health. Producers require feed that is nutritionally balanced, microbiologically safe, and suitable for specific production environments.

Disease risks such as highly pathogenic avian influenza also influence poultry operations across Europe. The USDA's latest European Union poultry assessment notes that biosecurity and disease surveillance remain important considerations for poultry producers.

Feed manufacturers can support producers through quality assurance, appropriate ingredient handling, and nutritional strategies designed to support bird health.

Technology Improves Feed Manufacturing

Modern feed mills are increasingly using automation, digital monitoring, precision dosing, laboratory testing, and data analytics to improve consistency.

Automated systems can improve ingredient measurement and batch accuracy, while quality-control technologies can help identify variations in raw materials. Digital systems can also support traceability from ingredient sourcing through final feed production.

Competitive Landscape

The European poultry-feed environment includes major feed manufacturers, agricultural cooperatives, nutrition companies, ingredient suppliers, premix producers, and vertically integrated poultry businesses.

Competition is shaped by feed quality, formulation expertise, ingredient sourcing, production efficiency, technical support, sustainability performance, and supply-chain reliability.

Companies capable of combining nutritional science with flexible sourcing and sustainable production practices can strengthen their position across Europe's poultry value chain.

Conclusion

Europe's poultry-feed industry is being shaped by continued poultry production, feed-efficiency requirements, protein-import dependence, sustainability objectives, feed-additive innovation, and increasing attention to supply-chain resilience.

The European Commission's latest data indicate continued poultry production activity, while FEFAC and European policymakers are placing greater emphasis on sustainable feeding strategies, domestic protein resources, circular feed, and resilient ingredient sourcing.

Feed manufacturers that combine precise nutrition, reliable ingredient sourcing, innovative additives, improved resource efficiency, and measurable sustainability practices can support the long-term competitiveness and resilience of Europe's poultry sector.
