Weddings, receptions, exhibitions, corporate functions and outdoor celebrations often depend on diesel generators for reliable temporary power. From stage lighting and sound systems to air conditioning, catering equipment and decorative installations, a modern event can have a surprisingly demanding electrical load.

RECD for DG SetChoosing a generator for such occasions is therefore more than simply hiring a machine with a particular kVA rating. Capacity, fuel consumption, noise, placement, operating duration, backup arrangements and environmental requirements all need to be considered. Where diesel generators are subject to additional local requirements, considerations may also become relevant.

Start With the Complete Event Load

The first step is to prepare a realistic list of all electrical equipment that will operate during the event.

A wedding may include:

Stage and decorative lighting
DJ and professional sound equipment
Air conditioners and coolers
Refrigerators and catering equipment
LED screens and projectors
Photography and livestreaming equipment
Fans and temporary lighting
Charging stations and other small electrical loads

The total running load should be calculated, but starting loads also deserve attention. Equipment containing motors or compressors can briefly demand significantly more power when switched on.

The generator should therefore be selected with sufficient capacity rather than being operated continuously at its absolute limit.

generator rental guide for weddings and eventsFor a practical event-specific approach, Aceget's provides useful considerations for planning temporary generator requirements.

Consider Noise Before the Event Begins

Noise can be particularly disruptive at weddings and formal events. A generator positioned too close to guests can interfere with speeches, music, ceremonies and conversations even when it provides perfectly stable electricity.

An acoustic enclosure can help reduce generator noise, but location is equally important. Whenever possible, the machine should be positioned away from guest areas while maintaining safe ventilation and convenient access for the operator.

CPCB's published requirements specifically address diesel-generator noise. For applicable DG sets, acoustic enclosures and suitable exhaust mufflers are among the measures used to control noise.

CPCB generator-set noise requirementsEvent planners can also review the when discussing equipment specifications with a rental provider.

Plan Fuel for the Entire Rental Period

Fuel planning should cover more than the advertised event duration.

Suppose a wedding begins at 7 PM. The generator may need to operate considerably earlier for sound checks, lighting tests, air-conditioning setup and vendor preparation. It may also remain operational after the programme while equipment is dismantled.

Before signing the rental agreement, confirm:

Fuel-tank capacity
Expected fuel consumption at the planned load
Who supplies the fuel
Refuelling responsibility
Additional fuel charges
Emergency refuelling arrangements

A generator with adequate fuel capacity and a clearly defined refuelling plan can reduce the risk of an interruption during the function.

Generator Placement Requires Careful Planning

Temporary generators should be installed on a stable surface with sufficient clearance around the equipment. Exhaust gases must be directed safely away from occupied areas, entrances and enclosed spaces.

Temporary power cables should also be routed carefully. At an event, guests, decorators, caterers and equipment operators may all be moving around the venue, so exposed or poorly positioned cables can create unnecessary hazards.

Outdoor venues require additional planning because rain and changing weather conditions can affect both the generator and electrical distribution equipment. Weather protection should be provided without blocking the ventilation required for safe generator operation.

Compliance Should Be Checked Before Booking

A rental generator is still subject to applicable environmental requirements even when it is being used temporarily.

CPCB's generator-set framework covers emissions and noise requirements for different categories of generator sets. Event organisers should therefore ask the rental company about the generator's applicable compliance status rather than assuming that every available rental machine can be used at every location.

This is particularly important in regions where authorities impose additional restrictions on DG-set operation.

Where RECD Can Become Relevant

RECD for DG SetFor an older diesel generator, may be an important part of the compliance discussion where applicable regulations require an emission-control arrangement.

This is especially relevant in the NCR. CAQM has issued directions regulating DG-set operation across different sectors and capacities. Its published direction includes restrictions on diesel-only DG sets that are not equipped with required emission-control devices or operating arrangements.

CAQM's official directions archive also provides access to its DG-set regulations and related directions.

the venue's location mattersFor event organisers, the practical lesson is straightforward: . A generator that is suitable for one event location may require different compliance consideration at another location.

Before confirming the rental, discuss the venue and expected operating conditions with the rental provider.

Ask the Rental Company the Right Questions

A professional rental arrangement should clearly establish what is being provided.

Ask the supplier:

What is the generator's rated kVA capacity?
What load can it continuously support?
What is its expected fuel consumption?
Is it acoustically enclosed?
Who will operate and monitor the machine?
Is a technician available during the event?
What happens if the generator fails?
Is replacement equipment available?
Are transportation and installation included?
Does the generator meet the applicable requirements for the venue?

These questions can prevent misunderstandings once the event is underway.

Consider Backup for Critical Events

A single properly sized generator may be sufficient for a small function, but larger weddings and high-production events may benefit from redundancy.

A backup generator can be particularly valuable when the event includes expensive lighting, large LED displays, professional sound systems or equipment that cannot tolerate prolonged interruption.

However, backup capacity increases rental costs and requires proper electrical planning. The decision should therefore be based on the importance of the connected loads and the consequences of a power failure.

Final Takeaway

Generator rental for weddings and events should be planned well before the guests arrive. Correct capacity, fuel availability, low-noise operation, safe placement, cable management and technical support all contribute to dependable temporary power.

RECD for DG SetEnvironmental compliance deserves the same attention. Where diesel-generator regulations apply, understanding requirements can help event organisers and rental companies select equipment that is appropriate for the specific venue.

The ideal generator is not simply the cheapest machine with enough kVA. It is one that can deliver stable power throughout the event while meeting the practical, safety and environmental requirements of the location.
