Everest Base Camp TrekAcclimatisation days are a crucial element of the , as they enable your body to acclimatise as you trek further up the mountains. They should neither be spent relaxing completely or turned into another arduous trekking period. The acid test is to take a short walk, sleeping, eating, drinking, and preparing for the next trek. Namche Bazaar and Dingboche are the two main bases in which most trekkers tend to spend these essential adjustment days.

Start With a Gentle Morning Hike

A light morning walk is one of the best acclimatization days available. Walk to a higher elevation for a few hours, then walk back to your sleeping village. This comes in handy since you go to a higher elevation but return sleeping in a lower elevation village. Take it easy, with no need to go faster than your legs are comfortable, particularly if you are already feeling weary. There is no competition with other trekkers! Maintain your energy for subsequent trekking days.

Explore the Surrounding Village

Once you‘ve done your morning hike you can enjoy a little time wandering around the village you are staying in. Namche Bazaar has shops, coffee and bakery places as well as the old mountain town streets whereas Dingboche offers a remote and quieter alpine environment. Walking through villages can be far less tiring than long distance trekking. Make sure you take your time and really enjoy it. This is a big part of the Himalayan experience, taking the time to see the villages as more than a ‘waypoint’ along your trek.

Enjoy the Mountain Views

The acclimatization days are a good time to appreciate the mountains around you without the pressure of heading for a specific destination. With good conditions, you could be treated to breathtaking views of Himalayan mountains looming above the valleys. Then relax outside with your camera, watch the clouds come and go around the peaks, or just sit and admire the scene. The weather can change rapidly, so remain vigilant with your cameras and don’t dash from one viewpoint to the next without allowing yourself sufficient time to indulge in the landscape.

Rest Your Legs After Hiking

After your short trek is complete, allow some time for your legs to rest and recuperate. Your body is already stressed with the additional altitude; any additional strenuous activity will only exhaust you for the next day on the trail. Rest with a healthy meal at the teahouse, drink plenty of fluid and rest. Reading, socializing with other trekkers, packing for the road and relaxing are all highly encouraged. The day spent at altitude can be just as important as the trek itself if it is used for rest and restoration.

Eat Enough Food

Food takes on additional significance during the Everest Base Camp trek, as the elevations climb higher. Your body burns a great deal of energy traveling uphill, and the cold temperatures and high altitude put extra stress on it. Take advantage of rest days when your appetite should begin to return. Eat plenty of wholesome foods in the proper time intervals. Stick to simple warm foods such as soups, rice, potatoes, eggs, noodles or whatever food is available. This is not the time to carefully monitor your protein consumption, just eat a lot and stay warm. The last thing you want is to be exhausted before setting out the following morning.

Keep Drinking Fluids

An essential element of an acclimatisation day is staying well hydrated. It is tempting to drink less than you would if you were working when you are resting in your tent or at rest during the daytime but your body still needs plenty of liquids. To facilitate such a gradual approach, it is advisable to drink fairly frequently during the day rather than drinking to excess only when you get thirsty. Food and drink such as tea, soup and similar can be counted into the total volume of water consumed. It is also wise to avoid becoming accustomed to large intakes of caffeinated or alcoholic drinks.

Check Your Trekking Equipment

An acclimatization day is a perfect opportunity to check your gear before getting higher and colder terrain. Verify if your trekking shoes, socks, gloves, jacket, sleeping bag, the straps of your backpack, and so on are all in their appropriate place. Make sure you have all you need at hand. If something is uncomfortable, fix it now before heading higher. Small irritations tend to grow after hours of walking. Use this slower day to pack your backpack.

Prepare Mentally for Higher Elevation

The mental side of the walk develops more and more as you approach EBC. Higher altitude can make what has been easy for you seem suddenly very hard, and everyone's progress may slow down and not be as quick as you imagined. Use the acclimatization day to take this into perspective and not race the other trekkers. I made the mistake of benchmarking my speed against the other trekkers, focusing on your own breathing, your pacing and your fitness. A calm approach will find the harder sections easier to deal with. Remember this is a walk that takes a number of days, not a race.

Avoid Overexertion

Overdoing the acclimatization days is an easy mistake. Trekkers may take a leisurely walk for 2 hours in the hope of seeing more, and finish the day pushing a very long walk and be so exhausted that they are short of breath going to bed. Keep the activity manageable, what is beneficial should also be sustainable. If the weather turns sour, or you are not feeling right, it is fine to turn around early. There is no shame in doing more resting time, the aim is to build up your body to higher altitudes, not to maximize viewpoints in a day.

Listen to Your Body

Be aware of your body during the day. Symptoms such as headache, abnormal fatigue, dizziness, nausea or any other symptoms of concern should not be ignored just because you have a hike planned for the day. Report symptoms to your guide or trek friends. An acclimatization day may be just what you need to evaluate yourself before heading higher. It is prudent to be flexible when attempting to reach a high point rather than push through. Carrying capacity over the long term.

Use the Evening for Preparation

The night before a departure from the acclimatization village can be an effective time to get ready for an early start. Tackle your daypack and double check that your water bottles are topped up. Review what layers your clothing and keep useful items easily accessible. Have an early dinner and be sure to give yourself a bit of “downtime” before crawling into your sleeping bag. Don‘t waste time staying awake too late; sound sleep is more and more important at higher elevations. Preparing for an easy morning makes the next step in the journey a little less daunting, especially if it‘s a longer trek and the weather is cold.

Conclusion

Being prepared on acclimatisation days can help the Everest Base Camp Trek go smoothly and comfortably. Look around your local area, go for a walk, admire the sights, cram in some food and drink, rest and recuperate, and get ready for the journey onwards. Use the time to run through your kit, and mentally prepare for the higher altitude. Remember to listen to your body and don‘t push yourself. Don‘t think of the acclimatisation day as wasted time, it is an essential part of arriving at Everest Base Camp in tip-top condition!
