When walking through historic British towns or viewing countryside estates from above, one of the most defining architectural elements is the roofline. Roofs do far more than shield a building from the elements; their shapes, shadows, and profiles dictate a property's character and heritage.

Pan tilesAmong the vast array of regional and international designs, certain historic profiles have stood the test of time. Chief among these are French-inspired interlocking tiles like the Diamond Courtrai, alongside traditional .

1. The Heritage of Classic Pan Tiles

Pan tilesDistinctive for their bold "S" shape, create dramatic light and shadow effects across a roof face. Originating in Flanders and introduced to the eastern coast of England in the 17th century, these wave-like clay tiles quickly became a staple across East Anglia, Yorkshire, and beyond.

Architectural Impact: The deep fluid wave of a traditional pan tile gives roofs a sense of movement and texture that flat tiles cannot emulate.
Functional Elegance: The overlapping curve naturally channels heavy rainfall away from seams, offering excellent weather defense on low-to-medium pitch roofs.

Because traditional handmade clay pan tiles vary in subtle shades—ranging from terracotta reds to deep weathered greys—sourcing reclaimed options is essential when extending or repairing period homes to keep that rich visual patina intact.

2. The Distinction of Courtrai Tiles

For those restoring French-style architecture or specialized European heritage builds, the Courtrai tile (often recognized in its iconic Diamond profile) represents a pinnacle of early industrial clay tile craft.

Unique Geometry: Unlike standard rectangular options, Diamond Courtrai tiles feature a central raised diamond crest, giving the roof a geometric, diamond-pattern lattice texture.
Precision & Durability: Engineered to interlock seamlessly, vintage Courtrai tiles offer exceptional resistance to high winds while delivering an unmistakable continentally inspired aesthetic.

Finding original Courtrai replacements can be notoriously difficult due to discontinued manufacturing lines, making established reclamation yards with deep historical inventory an indispensable resource.

3. Modern Evolution: The Legacy of Double-Panted Designs

As roofing technology evolved in the 20th century, manufacturers sought to recreate the beloved double-curve appearance of classic pan tiles in more versatile materials and efficient formats.

Redland grovebury roof tilesThis evolution gave birth to widely popular modern tiles such as . Designed with a double-pantile profile, the Grovebury offers the soft, rolling aesthetic of traditional clay pan tiles combined with the robust, cost-effective performance of concrete.

Whether repairing a mid-century home featuring Redland Groveburys or adding an extension that requires matching discontinued colourways, using reclaimed concrete options allows builders to maintain roofline consistency without compromising on profile dynamics.

4. Sourcing Unique Profiles for Restoration and Extensions

Pan tilesThe biggest hurdle when working with distinct shapes—be it Courtrai, hand-made , or double-pantile profiles—is sourcing exact matches. A mismatched profile can cause structural gaps, leading to water ingress, while visual mismatches ruin a building's curb appeal.
