Laser power is the biggest cost decision when buying a fiber laser cutting machine. A source that is too small slows production and limits the materials and thicknesses you can take on. A source that is too high costs more to buy, more to run, and sits underused most of the day.

This guide explains what laser power changes, what different wattages can cut, and how to match power to your work so you don't overspend or under-buy.

What Laser Power Actually Changes

More power does not simply mean a "better" machine. It affects three specific things.

Maximum cutting thickness. Higher power lets the beam pierce and cut through thicker plate. This is the most obvious benefit, and the reason most buyers focus on wattage.

Cutting speed. On medium and thick material, higher power cuts much faster. On thin sheet, the gain is smaller, because the machine's motion system (acceleration, axis speed, and dynamics) becomes the limiting factor rather than the laser.

Edge quality on thick material. With the right gas and settings, more power gives cleaner, smoother edges on thick stainless steel and aluminum, with less dross and a narrower heat-affected zone.

Laser power does not improve positioning accuracy. Accuracy and repeatability come from the machine frame, guide rails, drive system, and controller.

Typical Cutting Capacity by Laser Power

The figures below are approximate. Real results depend on the machine design, cutting head, optics, assist gas, and material quality, so always confirm with sample cuts.

Laser power	Mild steel (oxygen)	Stainless steel (nitrogen)	Aluminum (nitrogen)
1.5 kW	up to 12 mm	up to 5 mm	up to 4 mm
3 kW	up to 16 mm	up to 10 mm	up to 8 mm
6 kW	up to 22 mm	up to 20 mm	up to 16 mm
12 kW	up to 30 mm	up to 35 mm	up to 30 mm
20 kW and above	40 mm+	50 mm+	40 mm+

Maximum Thickness vs. Production Thickness

Suppliers usually advertise the maximum thickness a laser can cut. That number is a limit, not an everyday working range. At maximum thickness, cutting is slow, piercing takes longer, edge quality often drops, and the process becomes sensitive to material condition and gas purity.

production thicknessA better way to compare machines is : the range where the laser cuts quickly, reliably, and with good edge quality. As a rough guide, production thickness is about 60 to 70 percent of the stated maximum for most materials.

If you regularly cut 16 mm stainless steel, a machine that can technically cut 20 mm will struggle. A machine with comfortable headroom above 16 mm will do the job faster and more consistently.

Which Power Level Suits Which Shop?

1.5 kW to 3 kW: Thin Sheet and General Fabrication

This range suits shops that mainly cut sheet up to 6 to 8 mm: enclosures, brackets, signage, kitchenware, ventilation parts, and light structural components. Purchase price, electricity use, and gas consumption are all lower. It's a good entry point for a new laser cutting operation or a shop replacing plasma or punching for thin work.

4 kW to 6 kW: The All-Round Choice

A 4 to 6 kW machine cuts thin sheet quickly and handles medium plate up to about 20 mm in mild steel. Most contract fabricators and job shops find this range offers the best balance of flexibility and cost. It covers a wide mix of jobs without the running costs of a high-power system.

8 kW to 12 kW: Speed and Thick Material

This range is best for shops that regularly cut stainless steel or aluminum between 10 and 25 mm, or that need high throughput on medium plate. Nitrogen cutting of thicker stainless is significantly faster at this level, and the edges come out cleaner. It's a strong choice for shops with steady, high-volume orders and enough work to keep the machine busy.

15 kW and Above: Heavy Plate and High Volume

Very high power makes sense for structural steel, shipbuilding, heavy equipment, and large-volume production where the machine runs close to capacity. Below that level of demand, the higher purchase price, gas bills, and infrastructure requirements are hard to justify.

Operating Costs That Rise With Power

The purchase price is only part of the cost. Higher-power machines cost more to run.

Assist gas: Thick cutting consumes far more nitrogen or oxygen. For many shops, gas is the largest ongoing consumable cost.
Electricity: A stronger laser source and a larger chiller draw more power.
Consumables: Nozzles, ceramics, lenses, and protective windows wear faster under heavier loads.
Cooling and installation: Higher-power systems need stronger chillers, a stable three-phase power supply, and sometimes a larger gas supply setup.

If most of your work is under 6 mm, extra power adds cost without adding much speed.

Matching Laser Power to Your Material

Mild Steel

Oxygen cutting needs less power than nitrogen cutting. A 6 kW machine handles most mild steel work up to about 20 mm comfortably. Oxygen also works well on thick plate, though it leaves a thin oxide layer on the edge.

Stainless Steel

Clean, oxide-free edges require high-pressure nitrogen, which demands more laser power and more gas for the same thickness. If stainless steel is a large part of your work, size the laser for nitrogen cutting rather than oxygen.

Aluminum, Copper, and Brass

These metals reflect more laser energy and conduct heat away quickly. Modern fiber lasers with back-reflection protection cut them well, but you should plan for more power than you would need for mild steel of the same thickness.

How to Decide: A Simple Five-Step Process

List your jobs. Record material type, thickness, and monthly volume for the past 12 months.
Find your typical range. Identify the thickness range that covers about 80 percent of your work.
Size for that range, with headroom. Choose power that cuts your typical thickness at good speed, then consider one step up if thicker work is likely to grow.
Compare total cost of ownership. Include gas, electricity, and consumables, not just the machine price.
Test with your own material. Ask suppliers for sample cuts on your sheet and compare cutting time, edge quality, and dross.

Other Specifications That Matter as Much as Power

Wattage is one line on a spec sheet. These factors often affect daily productivity more.

Laser source brand and warranty: Check the source manufacturer, expected service life, and warranty terms.
Cutting head: Auto-focus, collision protection, and cooling quality affect consistency and consumable life.
Machine frame and drive system: A rigid, stress-relieved frame with a high-quality gantry allows faster acceleration without losing accuracy.
Bed size and loading options: Exchange tables, automatic loading, and sorting systems can raise output more than extra kilowatts.
Controller and software: Nesting quality, piercing routines, and cutting databases save time and material.

A well-built 6 kW machine often outperforms a poorly built 12 kW machine in real production.

Common Mistakes When Choosing Laser Power

Buying for the maximum thickness you might cut once a year. It's usually cheaper to outsource rare heavy jobs than to pay for power you rarely use.

Ignoring gas cost. A high-power machine cutting thick stainless with nitrogen can consume enough gas to change your profit margin on a job.

Comparing power without comparing machines. Two machines with the same wattage can perform very differently depending on the frame, cutting head, and controller.

Skipping sample cuts. Spec sheets show best-case results. Testing on your own material shows what you will actually get.

Final Thoughts

The right laser power is the one that matches your real workload, not the biggest number on a spec sheet. Start with your typical material and thickness, leave room for realistic growth, and calculate the full running cost before deciding. For most fabrication shops, that points somewhere between 3 kW and 12 kW, paired with a rigid machine, a quality cutting head, and a controller suited to your work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much laser power do I need to cut 10 mm stainless steel?

A 3 kW machine can cut 10 mm stainless steel with nitrogen, but slowly and near its limit. For steady production, 6 kW or more gives better speed and edge quality.

Is a 12 kW fiber laser too much for a small workshop?

Usually yes, unless the shop regularly cuts thick stainless steel or aluminum. For mostly thin sheet, the extra power adds gas, electricity, and purchase costs without a matching gain in speed.

Does higher laser power cut thin sheet faster?

Only to a point. On thin sheet, machine acceleration and axis speed become the limiting factor, so doubling the power does not double the speed.

Can a fiber laser cut copper, brass, and aluminum?

Yes. Modern fiber lasers cut reflective metals well, provided the machine has back-reflection protection and enough power for the thickness.

What is the difference between oxygen and nitrogen cutting?

Oxygen cutting uses the reaction with the metal to help cut mild steel, so it needs less power but leaves an oxidized edge. Nitrogen cutting gives a clean, oxide-free edge on stainless steel and aluminum, but needs more laser power and more gas.

How long does a fiber laser source last?

Fiber laser sources commonly last for many years, often rated for tens of thousands of operating hours. Actual life depends on the brand, operating conditions, cooling, and maintenance.

Should I choose a higher-power machine so I can grow later?

A modest step up is sensible if your orders are trending toward thicker material. Buying far beyond your foreseeable needs usually costs more than it returns.
