When we need access to money saved in a workplace retirement plan, understanding the rules before taking a distribution can help us avoid unnecessary taxes, penalties, and retirement setbacks. A Fidelity 401(k) withdrawal is governed primarily by the rules of the specific employer-sponsored plan, while Fidelity generally provides the platform and administrative services for eligible workplace accounts. Because each employer's plan can have different withdrawal and loan provisions, we should review the plan documents and available options before requesting money.

Withdraw 401k Fidelity: When Can We Take Money Out?

The ability to withdraw 401k Fidelity funds depends on the terms of the employer's plan and whether a qualifying distribution event has occurred. Depending on the plan, access may become available after retirement, separation from employment, reaching a specified age, or experiencing an eligible financial hardship.

A 401(k) plan does not automatically allow every type of withdrawal. The plan document determines which distribution options are available. Fidelity also explains that employer plans can have different rules concerning 401(k) withdrawals and loans, so participants should check their individual plan before beginning a transaction.

Fidelity 401(k) Withdrawal Terms and Conditions

The Fidelity 401k withdrawal terms and conditions depend on the particular workplace plan. Important factors can include employment status, age, vested balance, contribution source, plan provisions, and the reason for requesting the distribution.

Before requesting a withdrawal, we should review:

Whether the plan permits withdrawals while we are still employed

Whether a separation from employment is required

Whether hardship distributions are available

Whether a 401(k) loan is available

Which portions of the account are eligible for distribution

Federal and applicable state tax consequences

Whether an early-distribution tax may apply

Whether the plan imposes administrative requirements or fees

The IRS confirms that the plan document and summary plan description should identify when distributions, hardship withdrawals, or loans are permitted.

Fidelity Investments 401(k) Withdrawal and Cash Out

A Fidelity Investments 401k withdrawal generally means taking an eligible distribution from a workplace retirement account. A Fidelity 401k cash out is a more complete withdrawal in which a participant takes some or all of the available balance rather than leaving the money invested for retirement.

For a traditional 401(k), taxable amounts distributed to us generally count as income. If we are younger than 59½, an additional 10% federal tax may apply unless an exception applies.

Because withdrawing retirement savings can permanently reduce the amount available for future retirement, we should consider whether other sources of funds, a rollover, or a plan loan may better fit our circumstances.

Fidelity 401(k) Early Withdrawal Rules

A Fidelity 401k early withdrawal generally refers to a taxable retirement-plan distribution taken before age 59½. The IRS states that distributions from qualified retirement plans before age 59½ can generally be subject to a 10% additional tax, unless a specific exception applies.

Some exceptions can apply depending on the circumstances. Examples include certain distributions following separation from service after reaching age 55, qualifying disability distributions, certain substantially equal periodic payments, specific medical expenses, qualified domestic relations orders, and other situations recognized by tax law.

We should not assume that every early withdrawal qualifies for an exception. The exact facts and the type of distribution matter.

How to Withdraw From a Fidelity 401(k)

For those asking Fidelity how to withdraw from 401k, the practical process usually begins by reviewing the workplace account and determining which distribution options the employer plan permits.

A typical process may include:

Sign in to the workplace retirement account.

Review the available withdrawal or distribution options.

Check whether the request is eligible under the plan.

Select the appropriate distribution type.

Enter the amount or percentage to be distributed.

Review tax withholding and delivery information.

Confirm the request and retain the transaction records.

The exact online steps can vary because Fidelity administers many different employer plans with different provisions. If an online withdrawal option is not available, the plan may require additional documentation or assistance from a representative.

Fidelity 401(k) Loans and Withdrawals

A Fidelity 401k loan is different from a withdrawal. With a plan loan, eligible participants borrow from their retirement account and repay the loan according to the plan's repayment requirements. A withdrawal generally does not have to be repaid to the retirement account.

The IRS explains that a retirement-plan loan must be repaid to the participant's retirement account under the plan's rules. If the loan meets applicable requirements and repayments are made as required, the loan generally is not treated like a taxable distribution.

Not every 401(k) plan offers loans. Fidelity also notes that loans are generally available only when the particular employer plan permits them, and they are often primarily an option for active employees.

Fidelity 401(k) Hardship Withdrawal

A Fidelity 401k hardship withdrawal may be available when the employer's plan permits hardship distributions and we have an immediate and heavy financial need that satisfies the applicable requirements.

The IRS identifies examples of expenses that may qualify under applicable hardship rules, including certain medical expenses, costs associated with purchasing a principal residence, qualifying education expenses, preventing eviction or foreclosure, funeral expenses, and certain repairs to a principal residence.

However, the availability of a hardship distribution does not mean every financial difficulty automatically qualifies. The employer's plan must permit the distribution, and the distribution must satisfy the applicable requirements.

Fidelity Withdrawal Hardship: Important Tax Considerations

A fidelity withdrawal hardship distribution can have significant tax consequences. Generally, taxable amounts from a hardship distribution are included in income, and an additional 10% tax may apply if we are under age 59½ and no exception applies.

A hardship distribution also cannot simply be returned to the 401(k) as a loan repayment, and hardship distributions generally cannot be rolled over to another retirement plan or IRA.

For this reason, we should calculate the potential tax impact before deciding how much money to request.

Early Withdrawal From Fidelity 401(k) After Leaving a Job

Leaving an employer can change the distribution options available under a 401(k) plan. Depending on the plan, separation from employment may make some or all of the vested balance available for distribution or rollover.

An important exception to the 10% additional tax may apply when a participant separates from service during or after the calendar year in which they reach age 55. This rule has specific requirements and generally applies to the employer plan from which the separation occurred.

Because this rule is fact-specific, we should verify eligibility before requesting an early distribution.

Fidelity 401(k) Contribution Limit in 2026

The Fidelity 401k contribution limit is ultimately determined by federal limits and the individual employer plan. For 2026, the IRS states that the basic employee elective-deferral limit for traditional and safe-harbor 401(k) plans is $24,500.

Participants age 50 or older may generally be eligible for an additional $8,000 catch-up contribution in 2026. For participants who attain ages 60, 61, 62, or 63 during 2026, the higher catch-up limit is $11,250, if the plan permits it.

These contribution limits are separate from withdrawal rules. Contributing up to the annual limit does not automatically determine how or when the money can later be withdrawn.

Fidelity 401(k) Withdrawal Phone Number

For questions about a Fidelity workplace account such as a 401(k), 403(b), 457 plan, or other workplace benefit plan, Fidelity lists 800-835-5095 as the NetBenefits representative number. Fidelity lists the workplace-account service hours as Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. ET.

We should have our account information available when contacting Fidelity so the representative can identify the applicable workplace plan and explain the distribution options available under that plan.

Fidelity Investments Terms of Withdrawal 401(k): What We Should Check

Before submitting a withdrawal request, we should confirm:

Eligibility: Does the plan permit the requested distribution?

Employment status: Are we still working for the employer?

Age: Could an early-distribution tax apply?

Vesting: How much of the account balance belongs to us?

Taxes: What portion may be taxable?

Withholding: How much may be withheld from the payment?

Hardship requirements: If applicable, does the expense qualify?

Loan availability: Could a plan loan be available instead?

Rollover options: Would keeping the money in a retirement account better suit our circumstances?

Long-term impact: How much retirement growth could be lost by removing the funds?

Fidelity Withdrawal: Withdrawal vs. Loan vs. Rollover

The three options should not be treated as interchangeable.

A withdrawal permanently removes money from the retirement account and may create taxable income and an additional tax.

A 401(k) loan, when available, generally requires repayment to the retirement account under the plan's terms. Failure to meet repayment requirements can create tax consequences.

A rollover moves eligible retirement money to another qualifying retirement account rather than taking the money as cash. A properly completed rollover can generally preserve the tax-deferred retirement status of eligible funds.

The appropriate option depends on the plan provisions, personal circumstances, tax situation, and long-term retirement objectives.

Final Checklist

Before we take money from a workplace retirement account, we should verify the plan's exact rules rather than relying on general 401(k) information. Fidelity itself emphasizes that employer plans have different rules for loans and withdrawals.

We should confirm our eligibility, estimate taxes, check whether an early-distribution exception applies, compare a withdrawal with a potential loan or rollover, and understand how removing money could affect future retirement savings.
