finance functional consultantfinance and consultingEvery business that's been through a financial systems implementation has a version of the same story: the project took longer than planned, cost more than budgeted, and the finance team spent months after go-live working around a system that never quite matched how they actually operated. In most cases, the root cause traces back to a single hiring decision — treating work as something any competent IT or general consulting professional could handle, when it's actually a distinct specialty within the broader world of .

Two Skill Sets That Get Confused Constantly

The confusion starts with how these roles get described. A finance functional consultant and a general IT or systems consultant can sound nearly identical on paper — both work with financial software, both understand implementations, both speak the language of project timelines and technical configuration. In practice, they solve fundamentally different problems.

A general IT consultant approaches a financial system primarily as a technical product: how it's installed, configured, integrated with other tools, and maintained. Their expertise centers on the software itself.

A finance functional consultant approaches the same system through the lens of how finance actually operates: how revenue gets recognized, how cost allocations work, how reconciliations happen, how approval workflows should route based on real organizational structure. Their expertise centers on the financial processes the software is meant to support — the technical configuration is just the mechanism for encoding that understanding into the system.

Hiring a strong general IT consultant for a project that actually needs financial process expertise is one of the most common — and expensive — mismatches businesses make.

Where This Mismatch Actually Costs Businesses

Systems that technically work but don't reflect reality

A financial system configured without deep understanding of the business's actual accounting practices often runs correctly from a technical standpoint while producing reports that don't match how the finance team actually needs to think about the numbers.

Workarounds that undermine the entire investment

When a system doesn't fit real financial workflows, finance teams often revert to spreadsheets and manual processes alongside the new software — defeating the purpose of the implementation while still paying for the system and its maintenance.

Compliance and audit complications

Financial systems configured without proper attention to reporting hierarchies, audit trails, and regulatory requirements can create compliance gaps that surface unexpectedly during a review or audit, long after the implementation is considered "complete."

Extended timelines and budget overruns

Projects that start with the wrong expertise often require a second phase of correction once the mismatch becomes obvious — adding cost and delay that proper hiring at the outset would have avoided entirely.

What Genuine Finance Functional Consulting Actually Involves

Process mapping before configuration — understanding how the finance team currently operates before making any changes to the system
Chart of accounts and reporting structure design — building the system's financial architecture around how the business actually needs to analyze and report data
Workflow and approval logic — configuring systems to match real organizational decision-making, not a generic default template
Compliance-aware configuration — ensuring the system supports the specific regulatory and audit requirements relevant to the business
Change management and training — making sure the finance team actually understands and adopts the new system, not just that it's technically live

This is specialized work that sits at the genuine intersection of finance expertise and systems knowledge — which is exactly why treating it as interchangeable with general IT consulting tends to backfire.

Why This Specialty Is Becoming More Important, Not Less

As financial systems grow more sophisticated and businesses demand more real-time, decision-ready data from their finance functions, the margin for a poorly configured system keeps shrinking. A generic implementation that "mostly works" was tolerable when finance teams primarily needed historical reporting. It's far less tolerable now that leadership expects real-time visibility into cash flow, forecasting, and strategic decision support.

This shift is also why demand for genuine finance and consulting expertise — specifically the functional consultant specialty — continues to grow, even as general IT consulting talent remains widely available.

Questions to Ask Before Hiring for a Financial Systems Project

Have they worked specifically on financial process configuration, or primarily on general technical implementation?
Can they explain accounting concepts like revenue recognition or cost allocation in the context of the specific system being implemented?
Do they ask about existing financial workflows before proposing configuration changes?
Have they managed the change management and training side of an implementation, not just the technical build?
What's their approach when the "correct" technical configuration conflicts with how the finance team actually needs to work?

How Pillar Talent Consulting Approaches This

Pillar Talent ConsultingAt , finance functional consultant work is treated as the distinct specialty it actually is — not a subset of general IT consulting. That means connecting businesses with professionals who bring genuine financial process expertise alongside technical systems knowledge, so implementations are built around how a business really operates rather than a generic configuration applied regardless of context.

Because the value of finance and consulting support in this space isn't measured by whether the system goes live on schedule. It's measured by whether the finance team is still using it, as designed, six months later.

Final Thoughts

finance functional consultingFinancial systems projects fail more often from a hiring mismatch than from any inherent flaw in the software itself. Recognizing as a distinct specialty — one that requires genuine financial process understanding, not just technical configuration skill — is one of the clearest ways businesses can avoid the expensive cycle of implementation, workaround, and correction.

Finding that specific expertise, matched correctly from the start, is exactly the work Pillar Talent Consulting focuses on.
