Food Authenticity Testing Service Market Trends, Technology & Growth Outlook 2026

What is the Food Authenticity Testing Service Market?

The Food Authenticity Testing Service Market encompasses laboratory and analytical services that determine whether a food product is consistent with its identified identity, composition, origin, species, ingredients and production. Food authenticity testing is directly linked to the problem of food fraud which includes such economically-motivated forms as substitution, dilution, undeclared ingredients, mislabeling and others. Economically motivated adulteration is defined by FDA as the intentional omission, removal or substitution of valuable component from food or addition of any other substance that will add value to the product.

Why is food authenticity testing important?

It allows producers, retailers, regulators and importers to determine whether food products comply with their declared specifications and labels. Besides, it helps to find evidence of any economically-motivated adulteration that can cause any economic losses, regulatory issues and even harm to the consumer. FDA employs sampling, laboratory testing, inspection and method development as part of food fraud monitoring activities.

What does food authenticity testing detect?

Food authenticity testing can determine if there was a substitution of a species or ingredient, presence of undeclared additives, dilution, any form of adulteration, incorrect statements on geographical origin.

What is DNA testing in food authenticity analysis?

This technique is based on the identification of biological organisms in a tested food sample and can determine if the declared species or plant is present in the food. FDA applies the DNA sequencing method to identify the species of fishes and uses DNA barcoding and botanical authentication in food fraud research.

How is DNA barcoding applied in food tests?

The DNA barcoding technique is useful in distinguishing species that may seem similar after processing. It is especially applicable to seafood, meat, botanical ingredients and other food products in which substitution of one species for another cannot be detected visually. According to the FDA, DNA libraries with barcode information can be helpful in detecting species substitution.

What is PCR test in food authenticity?

The Polymerase Chain Reaction, or PCR, test is a method of DNA sequencing aimed at determining certain DNA sequences. The Real-time PCR provides targeted species or ingredient identification, while the metabarcoding technique involves the investigation of many biological constituents in a sample. Real-time PCR and metabarcoding are mentioned in the list of genetic techniques by the European Commission's Food Fraud Laboratory.
