Food Processing Automation Market Trends, Technology & Growth 2026

What is food processing automation?

Food processing automation means the utilization of computerized control systems, sensors, robotics, industrial software, automation equipment, and digital technologies to control and perform food manufacturing and processing operations by eliminating or decreasing manual labor. Automation may apply to processing, material handling, inspection, packaging, palletizing, quality control, production monitoring, and data management. According to the FDA guidance on computerized systems in food processing, such computerized systems are capable of controlling, monitoring, or documenting the essential functions of manufacturing processes, like controlling temperature, pressure, viscosity, and other manufacturing parameters.

Why is food processing automation important?

Food processing automation allows manufacturers to increase process consistency, improve production efficiency, quality control, and operational monitoring while minimizing the reliance on repetitive manual labor. The FDA states that computerized control systems allow food manufacturers to provide safer, more consistent, and more reliable products in less time and at a lower price point.

What are the major technologies used in food processing automation?

The technological landscape includes programmable logic controllers, industrial control systems, sensors, machine vision, robotics, automated conveyors, variable speed drives, industrial software, manufacturing execution systems, SCADA, artificial intelligence, and industrial IoT technologies.

Where can you find the primary application of food processing automation?

Food processing automation can be utilized in raw material handling, sorting, processing, cooking, mixing, filling, weighing, inspection, packaging, labeling, palletizing, warehousing, and quality control. The extent to which automation is utilized differs based on facility and type of product. Previous FDA-industry survey research indicated that processing and packaging were among the most automated functions within surveyed food manufacturing plants, whereas raw material handling, inspection, and warehousing showed more room for automation.

How are robots applied in food processing?

Robots can carry out repetitive tasks and physically demanding actions such as picking products, placing products into packages, case packing, palletizing, sorting, and material handling. According to ABB, robotics solutions are utilized throughout the food and beverages industry and the company points to picking, packing, and palletizing as typical robotic applications.

What are the primary drivers of the Food Processing Automation Market in 2026?

There are a number of factors fueling the market including labor availability, manufacturing productivity, food safety, product consistency, production capacity, process efficiency, and flexibility in production.
