Installing a Retrofit Emission Control Device (RECD) on an existing diesel generator set is not simply a matter of fitting equipment and putting the DG set back into operation. A successful retrofit project should also include a structured trial installation and evaluation process. This helps determine whether the system has been installed correctly, performs as expected and is suitable for continued operation.

For industrial and commercial users, the period between trial installation and final acceptance is particularly important. It provides an opportunity to verify installation quality, operating conditions, emission performance, safety considerations and documentation before the retrofit is formally accepted.

Why Trial Installation Matters

A trial installation provides a practical opportunity to evaluate how an RECD interacts with the existing DG set. Every generator installation can have different operating conditions, exhaust arrangements, space limitations and maintenance requirements. Therefore, the installation process should be evaluated rather than treated as a one-size-fits-all activity.

During the trial stage, the installation team can check whether the RECD has been fitted according to the manufacturer's instructions and whether the equipment is compatible with the intended DG set application.

Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) official CPCB RECD procedureThe provides an official RECD procedure that includes requirements for installation and operation instructions. The procedure states that RECD manufacturers, importers or retrofitters should provide appropriate instructions for installers and operators, including information about the approved application range and fitting requirements. Users can refer to the for the applicable technical details.

Establishing a Clear Baseline

Before evaluating the results of a retrofit, it is useful to establish a baseline for the original DG set. Baseline information can include engine operating conditions, load, exhaust measurements and other relevant parameters.

Without a reliable baseline, it can be difficult to determine whether changes observed after installation are actually related to the RECD. Recording the condition of the DG set before retrofit therefore creates a useful reference for later comparison.

The baseline should ideally be documented under defined and repeatable operating conditions. Load, engine temperature, fuel condition and other factors that may influence emission performance should be considered when planning the evaluation.

Checking the Physical Installation

One of the first acceptance checks should focus on the physical installation. The team should verify that the RECD is securely installed, properly connected and positioned according to the applicable installation instructions.

Important areas may include exhaust connections, mounting arrangements, access for maintenance, electrical or control connections where applicable and overall equipment condition.

The installation should also be reviewed from a safety perspective. The CPCB procedure specifically requires installation instructions to address identified safety hazards and to help maintain the safety level of the DG set after retrofitting.

Evaluating Emission Performance

Emission performance is generally one of the most important aspects of RECD acceptance. Depending on the applicable testing procedure, relevant parameters may be measured before and after installation.

Particulate matter and smoke-related measurements can provide useful information about the effectiveness of the emission-control system. Comparing post-installation results with the baseline allows the project team to assess whether the expected reduction has been achieved under the defined test conditions.

The objective should not simply be to obtain a lower reading. The test conditions, measurement method and operating state should also be properly documented so that the results can be interpreted correctly.

Checking Backpressure and Operating Conditions

An RECD becomes part of the DG set's exhaust system, so operating characteristics should be checked after installation. Backpressure is one parameter that may require attention because changes in the exhaust system can influence engine operation.

Genset Certification informationARAI's official genset certification information identifies temperature and backpressure measurements among the measurements carried out in relevant generator-set testing. Its official also provides access to CPCB-related system and procedure documents, emission limits, test-cycle information and requirements for diesel genset engines.

Checking these parameters during or after trial installation can help identify potential issues before final acceptance.

Reviewing Documentation

Technical documentation is another important part of the acceptance process. The project team should maintain records of the installed RECD, DG set details, installation information, test conditions, measured results and relevant inspection observations.

Clear documentation makes it easier to track the system later during maintenance, troubleshooting or additional performance evaluations.

Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Know Your Standard portalWhere applicable, teams should also review the relevant standards and technical requirements rather than relying only on supplier-provided information. The provides an official, where standards can be searched using an Indian Standard number or keyword.

Defining Acceptance Criteria

Acceptance criteria should ideally be established before the trial installation begins. This prevents disagreements later about whether the equipment has successfully met the project's requirements.

Criteria may cover installation quality, emission measurements, operating parameters, safety, documentation and equipment condition. The exact criteria will depend on the application, applicable regulations, project specifications and testing procedure.

A clear acceptance framework also helps different stakeholders understand their responsibilities. The DG set owner, RECD supplier, installer and testing team can work from the same documented expectations.

What Happens After Trial Acceptance?

Once the trial installation has been evaluated and the required checks have been completed, the project can move toward final acceptance. Any observations identified during the trial should ideally be addressed before the installation is considered complete.

This may include correcting installation issues, repeating measurements, improving documentation or resolving operating concerns. A structured approach helps prevent small issues from becoming larger maintenance or performance problems later.

Conclusion

The journey from RECD trial installation to final acceptance should involve more than simply checking whether the equipment is physically installed. A reliable evaluation considers installation quality, baseline conditions, emission performance, operating parameters, safety and documentation.

Using official technical information from organizations such as CPCB, ARAI and BIS can also help project teams make better-informed decisions. By defining acceptance criteria in advance and documenting the results carefully, DG set owners can create a more transparent and practical process for evaluating retrofit emission-control installations.
