Every December, a familiar scene plays out. A loving Mama, Bua-ji or family friend decides that this year's gift for the youngest member of the family will be a smartwatch. It is modern, it is useful, and the child will love it.

Then the gift is opened, and the parents quietly realise the watch needs a SIM they do not want to buy, has an app that asks for strange permissions, or lets anyone call the child. The watch goes back in the drawer.

Kids' smartwatches can be wonderful gifts, but they are different from toys. If you are planning to gift one this Christmas or New Year, this checklist will help you choose well.

Step 1: Talk to the parents first

This is the most important step and the one most often skipped. A smartwatch involves a SIM card, a parent app and ongoing decisions about who can contact the child. Ask the parents:

Are they comfortable with their child having a watch phone?
Do they want calling and location features, or just a simple digital watch?
Which mobile network works best at their home and the child's school?
Do they already use a particular brand or app for another child?

A two-minute call can turn a risky gift into a perfect one.

Step 2: Separate fitness bands from kids' watch phones

Many "kids' smartwatches" sold online are simply fitness bands or Bluetooth watches that need a phone nearby. They can count steps but cannot make calls or share location independently.

A true kids' watch phone has its own SIM slot, supports calling, and is managed through a parent app. Decide which kind the parents actually want.

Step 3: The safety checklist

Whatever the price, the best smart watches for kids share these basics:

Parent-approved contacts only, with unknown calls blocked.
No open internet browser, app store or social media.
Accurate location tracking using multiple satellite systems.
Class Mode or School Mode so it does not disturb lessons.
Encrypted data between the watch, cloud and parent app.
A free official parent app, with no subscription required.

Step 4: Think about the child's age and personality

Ages 5 to 7: Simplicity matters. Big buttons, durable build and straightforward calling.
Ages 8 to 10: Video calls, step challenges and a camera become exciting.
Ages 11 and above: Design matters more. Children this age want something that looks grown-up, not babyish.

And do not forget personality. A child who loves swimming needs proper water resistance. A child who loves sport will enjoy activity modes. A child who loves a particular cartoon world may treasure a themed edition for years.

Step 5: Check after-sales support

Gifts sometimes need help. Choose a brand with an Indian website, local customer support, a clear warranty and a return policy. A long warranty matters more for children's devices, because they are used hard.

Step 6: Make the unboxing easy

Little things that make a gift land well:

Include a note telling parents the watch takes a Nano SIM and needs a parent app.
Charge it before wrapping, so the child can switch it on immediately.
Keep the invoice in an envelope for warranty registration.

Gift ideas by type of child

The explorer: a watch with strong location tracking and good water resistance.

The chatterbox: a watch with clear video calling and family group chat.

The athlete: a watch with sports modes and step rankings.

The fan: a themed or limited edition that feels special to own.

A gift that feels special

Specialist children's brands increasingly offer designs that delight kids while keeping parents' safety requirements intact. imoo is one such brand, known for watch phones built around approved-contact calling, location tracking and no open internet. For a festive gift that feels truly special, its My Little Pony limited edition smartwatch is based on the imoo Z7, with a themed watch face, exclusive animations and a custom gift box, along with the Z7's dual cameras, five-system location tracking, health and sports features and 20-metre water resistance.

The bottom line

The best smartwatch gift is the one the parents approve of and the child cannot stop showing off. Talk to the parents, focus on safety basics, match the watch to the child, and choose a brand that will support the family long after the wrapping paper is gone.
