TheHurrican Tech Desk — September 27, 2026

A month into its shelf life now, the Pixel 11 Pro has settled into that awkward post-launch phase where the initial hype's died down but it's still too new for real long-term verdicts. Google brought it out August 12 in New York, of all cities to pick for a comedian-hosted tech keynote — Trevor Noah ran the show this time, following Jimmy Fallon's turn the year before. Stephen Curry showed up. So did podcast host Alex Cooper and cricketer Shubman Gill. Wide retail availability followed eight days later, on the 20th.

The Family It Belongs To

Four phones dropped together that day, not just this one. A standard Pixel 11 sits below it, a larger Pro XL above it, and — this got people talking more than anything else on stage — a folding Pixel 11 Pro Fold rounded out the group. The Pro model, the one this piece is actually about, sits in the middle of that spread: not the cheapest, not the biggest, arguably the one Google spent the most marketing energy defending.

Under the Hood

Tensor G6 runs the show this generation — Google's first chip built on a 2-nanometer process, which on paper should mean better speed and better battery efficiency simultaneously, the two things chips usually trade off against each other. Alongside it sits a genuinely new modem, and this piece specifically matters more than a spec sheet entry usually would. Pixel phones have carried a reputation problem around connectivity for roughly six years running, tied to relying on Samsung-built modems that never quite matched what Qualcomm-powered rivals offered. A fresh modem doesn't automatically fix a six-year-old complaint. It's a real attempt at one, though — arguably the most direct swing Google's taken at the problem to date. Whether it actually lands won't be clear until enough people have lived with it daily for a stretch, not just a review period.

Screen brightness climbed too — 2,450 nits peak, up from 2,000 last generation. You'll notice that outdoors, midday sun, squinting at your phone kind of situations. Indoors, less so, honestly, since most screens are already bright enough for typical room lighting regardless. The rear camera array picked up a genuinely new 48MP periscope telephoto lens as its centerpiece, extending reach noticeably past what last year's Pro offered.

Where Google Cut Corners

Not every change went upward. Battery capacity actually dropped slightly this generation, landing at 4,850mAh — a small dip rather than the growth people generally expect year over year from a flagship refresh. Storage took a hit too, in a different sense: Google killed off the 128GB tier entirely, meaning anyone wanting the Pixel 11 Pro now starts at 256GB whether they wanted that much space or not.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro MaxPricing climbed as well, from $999 last year to $1,099 now. Google's leadership addressed the increase publicly ahead of launch rather than letting it go unexplained, pointing to memory costs climbing sharply across the entire chip industry over the past year — a shortage affecting essentially every phone maker simultaneously, not something unique to how Google sources parts. Buyers outside the US, in the UK and across the EU specifically, are seeing comparable increases on their end too. None of this happened in a vacuum, either: analysts at IDC are projecting smartphone prices broadly climbing somewhere between 3 and 5 percent globally this year, and Apple's launched pricier than last year's models for essentially the same underlying reason.

What It Looks Like

Every 2026 Pixel shares a redesigned camera bar this generation — edge-to-edge glass, stretched across the back, visually tying the whole lineup together more than past years managed. The Pro specifically picks up something the standard model doesn't get: a feature branded HiLight, an RGB LED array replacing what used to be a thermometer sensor sitting in that same spot. Comparisons to Nothing's Glyph lighting system started almost immediately after the reveal, and honestly, the resemblance is hard to argue with. Useful daily feature or a gimmick that fades within a month? Still an open question.

Infrared face unlock, something rumor sites had pegged as likely for this generation, simply isn't here. Not on the Pro, not on any 2026 Pixel model. Reports suggest the underlying tech wasn't mature enough to make this release window.

Color options land close to what shipped last year — Moonstone, Jade, Porcelain, Obsidian, give or take minor naming shifts. Storage tops out at 1TB, with 256GB and 512GB filling the middle, and there's no expansion slot, so the tier you pick at checkout is the one you're stuck with.

Software Side of Things

Seven years of major OS updates is the promise here, matching Google's now-standard long-support commitment across the Pixel line, backed by ongoing security patches and periodic Feature Drops. Pro buyers specifically get six months of Google AI Pro tossed in — broader Gemini access, 5TB of storage, Health Premium included — genuinely solid value assuming you remember to evaluate the subscription once that free window closes rather than getting auto-billed without noticing.

Set Against the Competition

Galaxy S26 UltraSamsung's plays a different game entirely — bigger screen, S Pen bundled in, generally scaled up across the board. The Pixel 11 Pro is chasing something else: staying compact without sacrificing the camera and performance people expect from a true flagship. Neither philosophy beats the other objectively. It's really a question of whether you want Samsung's go-bigger instinct or Google's stay-pocketable one.

iOS 27Pro designcolor lineupexact measurementsApple factors into this comparison too, particularly on software. , which arrived alongside the iPhone 18 Pro this same month, rebuilt Siri using a combination of Apple's own models and Google's Gemini technology working underneath. There's a strange irony there — Google's competing against Apple at retail while simultaneously powering part of what makes the newest iPhone's AI assistant function. Apple stuck with aluminum rather than titanium on this year's , and its plus are worth checking if you're genuinely torn between platforms rather than already decided.

Worth Buying?

Comes down to what's currently sitting in your pocket. Frustrated by connectivity on an older Pixel specifically? The new modem alone might justify jumping to the Pixel 11 Pro, assuming those early reliability improvements actually hold once thousands of people are using it under real-world conditions rather than review-unit conditions. Chasing a smaller flagship that doesn't compromise on camera quality? This stays one of the few phones actually built around that particular combination rather than treating "compact" and "capable" as opposing goals. The downsides — smaller battery, higher price tag, fixed storage — are genuine, but none rise to the level of undermining what's otherwise a solid, incremental step forward.

iPhone DuoFor anyone specifically eyeing the foldable side of Google's lineup instead, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold launched the same day and merits its own separate look. Apple's entry into that same category, the , arrives this October — meaning foldable shoppers get a genuine three-way comparison this cycle between Google, Apple, and Samsung.
