The Haircare Salon Market comprises professional businesses offering haircutting, hairstyling, hair coloring, conditioning, treatments, blow-drying, straightening, curling, scalp and other appearance-oriented hair services. Salons might also offer beauty services depending on the market, but hair remains the main service category.

What drives the demand for hair salons?

Haircare is a recurrent personal care service and not a one-off. People visit salons for haircuts, color retouches, styling, treatments, and other services based on their own routine. The recurrent nature of this type of service forms a different demand model compared to many other categories of consumer goods.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were around 576,800 payroll workers in hair, nail and skin care services in September 2026, including 407,300 workers in barber shops and beauty salons.

What do customers look for?

Search queries related to hair salons tend to be rather narrow. Customers may search for "near me haircut", "women's haircut", "men's haircut", "children's haircut", "hair coloring", "balayage", "highlights", "keratin treatment", "hair straightening", "curly hair salon", "scalp treatment", "hair spa", "bridal hairstyling", "professional hair treatment" and others.

Why are hair cuts at the root of salon demand?

The hair cut is among the most repetitive services since the hair keeps growing and the customer needs maintenance. The BLS states that basic haircare services are a constant factor of demand for barbers and hairdressers. BLS further expects the demand for hair coloring, hair straightening, and other advanced hair treatment to remain during the projection period of 2025 – 2035.

Why is hair coloring a growth opportunity?

The hair coloring can create a more specialized appointment than a basic hair cut as the client will need a consultation, choice of the color, preparation, application, processing, finishing, and maintenance.

These services may vary from full hair coloring, highlights, lowlights, balayage, gray coloring, corrective color, and fashion colors. The search behavior and knowledge of each service are different.

Why is the role of hair treatments important?

The hair treatments serve various purposes of clients such as conditioning, smoothing, manageability, repair, texturizing and enhancing the look. These services are especially important for the customers whose hair is frequently colored, heated, or chemically processed.
