Students do not always respond to information in the same way. One learner may understand a concept more easily through numerical examples, while another benefits from diagrams, practical activities, discussion, or open-ended projects. Recognizing these differences can encourage educators to explore a broader range of teaching strategies.

The Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI) offers a framework for discussing thinking preferences that can inform conversations about learning and teaching. Although it is not a diagnostic tool for measuring academic ability, its underlying Whole Brain Thinking concepts can encourage educators to consider how different approaches to presenting information may support student engagement.

Understanding the Connection Between Thinking and Learning

Learning involves several activities, including understanding information, organizing knowledge, connecting ideas, and applying concepts to new situations.

The Herrmann framework uses four broad quadrants to describe different thinking preferences. These are commonly associated with analytical, practical, relational, and experimental approaches.

In an educational setting, the framework can help teachers reflect on whether their lessons offer students varied opportunities to engage with a topic.

For instance, a lesson based entirely on lectures and factual explanations may provide limited opportunities for discussion, experimentation, or practical application. Adding different activities can make the learning experience more varied and give students additional ways to engage with the subject.

Four Perspectives Educators Can Explore

1. Analytical Activities

Analytical activities emphasize evidence, reasoning, and careful examination. Students might compare data, interpret research findings, solve mathematical problems, or evaluate the strength of an argument.

These activities encourage learners to explain how they reached a conclusion rather than simply memorizing an answer.

2. Practical Activities

Practical activities focus on organization, clear procedures, and applying knowledge. Examples include following laboratory instructions, developing a project timeline, completing a structured exercise, or using a checklist to review an assignment.

Such activities can help students connect abstract concepts with specific tasks and outcomes.

3. Relational Activities

Relational activities emphasize communication, perspective-taking, and cooperation. Classroom discussions, peer feedback, collaborative projects, and case studies involving human experiences can help students consider how knowledge relates to people and communities.

These approaches can also create opportunities to practice respectful disagreement and constructive communication.

4. Experimental Activities

Experimental activities invite students to explore possibilities, make connections, and develop original ideas. Teachers might use design challenges, creative writing, open-ended research questions, or projects that allow several possible solutions.

These activities encourage curiosity and give learners opportunities to investigate ideas beyond a single predetermined answer.

Designing Lessons With Multiple Approaches

Teachers can use these perspectives to review their lesson plans without assigning every student a permanent learning category.

Imagine a science lesson about renewable energy. Students could begin by examining energy-production data and comparing efficiency figures. Next, they might organize a project explaining how a renewable energy system works. A group discussion could explore the effects of energy choices on communities, followed by a design activity in which students propose an innovative solution for a local energy challenge.

The same topic is approached through evidence, organization, human context, and creative exploration.

This structure can make lessons more varied while reinforcing the same learning objectives. It also gives educators several opportunities to observe student understanding across different activities.

Why Students Should Not Be Labeled

A key consideration is the difference between recognizing preferences and defining someone's abilities.

A student who enjoys practical exercises is not necessarily unable to learn through reading. Likewise, a learner who prefers analytical tasks can still benefit from creative projects and group discussions.

Teachers should not use HBDI results to restrict educational opportunities or determine that a student can learn only through one particular method. Assessment results should not replace direct evidence of student understanding, academic progress, or individual support needs.

Instead, educators can use the framework as a prompt to examine their teaching methods and consider whether students have opportunities to practice a variety of skills.

Supporting Independent Thinking

An additional benefit of exploring different thinking approaches is the opportunity to help students recognize their own habits.

Learners can reflect on whether they tend to gather information before acting, prefer detailed instructions, consider other people's perspectives, or enjoy generating possibilities. They can then practice approaches that feel less familiar.

For example, a student who quickly generates creative ideas might benefit from learning how to organize those ideas into a clear plan. Someone who carefully follows instructions might practice exploring alternative solutions before choosing a final answer.

The goal is to develop flexibility, not to encourage students to remain within a single category.

Conclusion

The Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument provides educators with a framework for discussing different thinking preferences and considering how these perspectives relate to classroom activities.

Its four-quadrant model can inspire lessons that combine evidence, practical application, interpersonal understanding, and creative exploration. However, the framework should complement established teaching practices rather than replace evidence-based educational methods.

By offering varied learning experiences and encouraging students to reflect on their approaches, educators can help learners develop a broader set of skills. Ultimately, effective education should expand what students are able to do, rather than limit them according to a preferred way of thinking.
