A reliable backup power system is one of the most important infrastructure components in a hospital. Medical facilities depend on continuous electricity for intensive care units, operating theatres, emergency lighting, diagnostic equipment, ventilation, elevators, refrigeration and essential communication systems. Because of this, selecting a generator cannot be based only on the total connected electrical load.

RECD for DG SetProper generator sizing requires an understanding of critical loads, starting requirements, operating conditions and future expansion. For hospitals that operate diesel generators for backup power, environmental compliance and considerations may also become part of the overall planning process.

Identify the Hospital's Critical Loads First

The first step in generator sizing is to prepare a detailed electrical load schedule. Hospitals have many different types of equipment, but all of them may not require generator power during an outage.

Critical loads can include life-support equipment, emergency lighting, fire protection systems, medical monitoring equipment, essential ventilation and selected communication systems. Other non-essential loads may be temporarily disconnected to keep the available generator capacity focused on priority systems.

This classification prevents two common problems: selecting a generator that is unnecessarily large or selecting one that cannot handle essential hospital operations.

Calculate Running and Starting Loads

A generator must be capable of handling both continuous electrical demand and short-duration starting loads.

Motors used in pumps, elevators, HVAC systems and other hospital services can draw substantially higher current when they start. If these starting characteristics are ignored, a generator that appears sufficient on paper may experience voltage drops or frequency disturbances during operation.

Power factor should also be considered when converting between kW and kVA. Simply adding the nameplate ratings of every connected device may not provide an accurate picture of the actual demand.

The hospital's engineering team should therefore evaluate running loads, motor-starting requirements, diversity and expected simultaneous operation before finalizing generator capacity.

Consider Medical Electrical Installation Requirements

Hospitals have electrical requirements that differ from many ordinary commercial buildings because electrical reliability and safety can directly affect patient care.

BIS standard details for IS 17512:2021The can be consulted when reviewing applicable medical-location electrical requirements.

Plan for Generator Redundancy

Capacity is only one part of hospital backup planning. Reliability also depends on redundancy.

A facility that depends entirely on one generator may face a serious problem if that unit fails during an outage. Depending on the hospital's size and criticality, multiple-generator configurations can provide additional resilience.

For example, an N+1 arrangement can provide additional generating capacity so that essential loads can continue operating even when one generator is unavailable. Paralleling, synchronization, automatic transfer and protection systems should be considered during the design stage rather than added later.

National Building Code of India 2016 information from BISThe is another useful official reference when considering broader building-services and safety requirements.

Don't Ignore Fuel and Operating Conditions

Generator sizing should also account for how long the hospital may need to operate without utility power.

Fuel storage, refuelling arrangements and expected operating duration can influence the practical backup strategy. A generator intended for occasional emergency operation may have different requirements from a system expected to run for prolonged periods.

Hospitals should also consider ambient temperature, ventilation, altitude where applicable and the physical location of the generator. These factors can influence generator performance and installation requirements.

Power Quality Is Especially Important

Keeping equipment powered is not enough if the quality of electricity is unsuitable.

Voltage regulation, frequency stability and transient response are important when the generator supplies sensitive medical and electronic equipment. Large motors switching on and off can also affect the electrical system.

The transfer system should therefore be designed to restore essential power quickly while maintaining appropriate protection and electrical stability.

Include Emission Compliance in Diesel Generator Planning

Hospitals operating diesel generator sets also need to consider environmental requirements. Generator emissions can include particulate matter and gaseous pollutants, making emission control an important part of responsible DG-set operation.

CPCB Environmental Regulation on Engines for Generator Set Application and Generator SetsCPCB's official documentation covers environmental regulations for generator-set engines and generators, including emission and noise requirements. The provides an official reference for applicable requirements.

CPCB genset emission compliance documentFor newer generator-set engines up to 800 kW gross mechanical power, CPCB also publishes compliance information covering emission limits, certification procedures, testing and NOx/PM control measures. The can therefore be useful when reviewing emission-related requirements.

RECD for DG SetWhere an existing diesel generator requires emission-control measures, planning may become relevant alongside the electrical and operational assessment. The objective is to ensure that the generator remains suitable for its intended application while addressing applicable emission-control requirements.

Installation and Commissioning Matter Too

A correctly sized generator can still perform poorly if installation is inadequate. Exhaust routing, ventilation, cooling, fuel arrangements, acoustic treatment, access for maintenance and electrical protection should all be considered.

Commissioning should verify automatic transfer operation, voltage and frequency behaviour, load response and protection functions. Where appropriate, load testing can provide additional confidence that the generator performs under realistic demand.

A Practical Hospital Generator Sizing Approach

A reliable hospital backup system should therefore follow a structured process:

Identify critical and non-critical electrical loads.
Calculate actual running demand.
Evaluate motor-starting requirements.
Consider power factor and diversity.
Determine the appropriate redundancy level.
Check fuel storage and expected runtime.
Review medical-location electrical requirements.
Plan ventilation, exhaust and installation arrangements.
Evaluate applicable generator emission requirements.
Test and document the completed system.

The right generator is not necessarily the largest generator available. It is the one that can reliably support essential hospital services under realistic operating conditions while allowing appropriate safety, electrical and environmental requirements to be addressed.

RECD for DG SetFor facilities using existing diesel generator sets, electrical reliability and emissions planning should be considered together. A properly evaluated can form part of an emission-control strategy where applicable, while careful generator sizing ensures that critical hospital operations continue receiving dependable backup power when the main electricity supply is unavailable.
