What Should You Check Before Car Insurance Renewal?

Start by checking your current policy instead of renewing it without a review. Read the policy details and check what your existing cover includes.

Focus on these points:

Policy type and coverage
Policy expiry date
Insured Declared Value
No Claim Bonus
Deductible amount
Add on covers
Claim history
Network garage options
Personal accident cover
Exclusions and limits

Should You Compare Different Car Insurance Plans at Renewal?

Yes, you should compare different plans before the renewal. The premium is only one part of the decision.

Two policies can have different coverage, deductibles, add ons, and claim conditions. You should compare the actual benefits instead of looking only at the final price.

Check these areas during comparison:

Coverage

See what the policy covers after an accident, theft, fire, natural event, or other covered loss. Third party insurance is legally required for cars in India. Own damage cover protects your car from covered risks.

IDV

IDV means Insured Declared Value. It represents the insured value of your car for certain total loss or theft claims.

Deductible

A deductible is the amount you pay from your own pocket during a covered claim. Check the compulsory deductible and any voluntary deductible before selecting a plan.

Add On Covers

Add ons can provide extra protection beyond the basic policy. Common options include zero depreciation cover, roadside assistance, engine protection, and return to invoice cover.

How Can You Choose Add On Covers for Your Car?

Choose it based on your car's age, use, location, and risk. The right ones can fill gaps in your standard policy.

Zero depreciation cover can be useful for owners who want lower depreciation deductions on eligible parts during claims.

Roadside assistance can help if your car breaks down or faces certain roadside problems. It can be useful for people who travel long distances.

Engine protection can cover certain engine related losses under specific policy conditions.

Return to invoice cover can provide extra protection in specific total loss or theft situations.

Does No Claim Bonus Matter During Renewal?

Yes, it can affect your renewal premium. NCB is generally linked to claim free policy periods and can provide a discount on the own damage premium under applicable terms.

Before renewal, check the NCB shown in your renewal quote. Make sure it matches your policy record.

Do not make a claim only because the policy allows it. For small repair costs, compare the likely claim benefit with the effect on your NCB.

If you switch insurers, check how your NCB will carry forward. Keep your previous policy details and renewal records available.

NCB belongs to the policyholder rather than the car. This distinction can matter when you sell a car or buy another one.

What Should You Check About Claims & Service?

A good policy needs clear claim support. Before renewal, check how the insurer handles claims and what process you must follow.

Look at these practical points:

Claim intimation process
Cashless garage availability
Required documents
Survey and inspection process
Repair approval process
Deductible rules
Claim exclusions
Customer support channels

Should You Choose the Cheapest Car Insurance at Renewal?

The cheapest plan may not be the right choice for every car owner. Price matters, but coverage should come first.

Suppose one plan costs less because it has a lower IDV or fewer add ons. Another plan costs more but gives cover that suits your needs better.

You should compare the premium with the protection you receive. Also check deductibles, exclusions, claim support, and add on terms.

Avoid paying for covers that you do not need. At the same time, do not remove useful protection just to reduce the premium.

Your car's age also matters. An older car may have different insurance needs from a new car.

What Mistakes Should You Avoid During Car Insurance Renewal?

Car owners often make simple mistakes during renewal. A careful review can prevent these problems.

Avoid these mistakes:

Renewing without checking the policy details
Choosing only by premium price
Ignoring the IDV
Forgetting to check NCB
Selecting unnecessary add ons
Choosing a high voluntary deductible without understanding it
Ignoring policy exclusions
Giving incorrect vehicle or personal details
Waiting until the last moment
Failing to check claim related conditions
