RECD for DG Set is a technology designed to reduce harmful particulate emissions from diesel generator sets. Diesel generators are commonly used as backup or continuous power sources, but their exhaust can contain particulate matter and other pollutants. An RECD system works by treating the exhaust gases before they are released into the atmosphere. Understanding how an RECD works can help DG set owners understand its purpose, operation, and maintenance requirements.

What Is an RECD System?

RECD stands for Retrofit Emission Control Device. It is an emission-control system that can be installed on an existing diesel generator set. Unlike replacing an entire DG set, a retrofit system is designed to work with an existing engine and exhaust arrangement.

The main purpose of an RECD is to reduce particulate matter and other harmful components present in diesel exhaust.

How Does an RECD Work?

An RECD is generally installed in the exhaust line of the DG set. When the engine operates, exhaust gases travel through the exhaust system and reach the emission-control device.

Inside the device, specially designed filtration or treatment components capture or reduce pollutants before the exhaust is discharged.

The basic process can be understood in these steps:

1. Combustion Produces Exhaust

Diesel fuel burns inside the engine to generate power. This combustion process produces exhaust gases containing different pollutants, including particulate matter.

2. Exhaust Travels Through the System

The exhaust gases move from the engine through the exhaust piping toward the RECD.

3. Pollutants Are Captured or Reduced

The RECD uses its internal emission-control mechanism to reduce particulate emissions. Depending on the technology used, the system may capture particulate matter and/or support further treatment of exhaust gases.

4. Treated Exhaust Leaves the DG Set

After passing through the RECD, the treated exhaust is released through the outlet of the system.

What Are the Main Benefits of RECD?

One of the major benefits of an RECD is emission control. By reducing particulate emissions from diesel exhaust, it can help improve the environmental performance of an existing DG set.

Other potential benefits include:

Reduced particulate emissions
Better control of visible smoke
Support for cleaner operation
Ability to retrofit an existing DG set
Potential compliance support where applicable
Reduced environmental impact

Actual emission performance depends on the RECD model, DG set specifications, operating conditions, and installation quality.

Does RECD Affect DG Set Performance?

A properly selected and installed RECD is designed to operate with the DG set's exhaust system. However, the exhaust system introduces additional resistance, so installation and maintenance are important.

If the system becomes blocked or is not maintained properly, excessive back pressure can potentially affect engine operation.

For this reason, operators should follow the manufacturer's installation and maintenance recommendations.

What Should Be Checked During Installation?

Before installing an RECD, several factors should be considered:

DG set capacity
Engine make and model
Exhaust pipe size
Exhaust gas temperature
Expected operating load
Available installation space
Back-pressure limits
Applicable emission requirements
Manufacturer recommendations

Professional installation can help ensure that the system works correctly without creating unnecessary problems in the exhaust line.

How Can an RECD Be Maintained?

Regular inspection is important for maintaining an emission-control system. Operators should monitor the system according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Important checks may include:

Inspecting the exhaust connections
Checking for leakage
Monitoring back pressure
Checking the condition of filtration components
Looking for abnormal smoke or exhaust behavior
Following recommended cleaning or replacement intervals

The maintenance schedule may vary depending on the technology and operating conditions.

Conclusion

An RECD works by treating the exhaust of a diesel generator before it is released into the atmosphere. It is installed in the exhaust system and uses emission-control technology to reduce particulate emissions. For effective operation, the RECD should be properly selected, installed, monitored, and maintained according to the manufacturer's recommendations.
