Diesel generators are essential for maintaining power continuity at industrial plants, offices, hospitals, commercial buildings, telecom facilities and other critical sites. However, the exhaust produced by a diesel engine contains pollutants that need to be controlled before they are released into the atmosphere.

Retrofit Emission Control Device (RECD)This is where a becomes relevant.

An RECD is an exhaust after-treatment system designed to be installed on an existing diesel generator. Instead of replacing the complete engine or generator, the emission-control equipment is integrated into the existing exhaust path.

But how does an RECD actually work?

The answer becomes easier to understand when the exhaust journey is followed from the engine to the chimney.

What Happens to Diesel Exhaust?

During diesel combustion, the engine produces exhaust containing pollutants such as particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).

The exact composition depends on factors such as engine design, fuel quality, operating load, combustion condition and maintenance.

An emission-control system works after combustion has already taken place. It treats the exhaust before it leaves the generator's exhaust stack.

What Is an RECD and How Does It Work? For a detailed introduction to the technology, readers can also refer to Aceget's guide on, which explains the exhaust-treatment process in greater technical detail.

Step 1: Exhaust Leaves the Diesel Engine

The process begins when combustion gases leave the engine cylinders.

At this point, the exhaust still contains the pollutants produced during combustion. The gases move through the exhaust manifold and continue toward the exhaust-treatment system.

An RECD is installed downstream of the engine, meaning it does not normally require opening or rebuilding the engine itself.

This is one of the main advantages of retrofit technology: an existing generator can potentially be upgraded without replacing the complete power-generation equipment, subject to the applicable regulatory and technical requirements.

Step 2: Exhaust Enters the RECD Housing

The exhaust is directed into a specially designed RECD housing.

The housing is not simply a standard box that can be attached to every generator. Its dimensions and internal components need to correspond with the generator's exhaust flow, engine capacity, operating conditions and physical installation arrangement.

For example, a small commercial DG set and a large industrial generator will have substantially different exhaust-flow requirements.

DG set RECD deviceThis is why proper sizing is an important part of selecting a .

An incorrectly sized unit can create excessive exhaust restriction or fail to provide the expected emission-control performance.

Step 3: Catalytic Treatment

Depending on the RECD design, the exhaust can pass through a catalyst that assists oxidation reactions.

A Diesel Oxidation Catalyst, or DOC, can help convert carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons into less harmful compounds.

The catalyst does not work like a conventional filter that simply collects particles. Instead, it promotes chemical reactions on its coated surface.

This means that temperature is an important consideration. Exhaust conditions need to remain suitable for the catalyst to function effectively.

Step 4: Particulate Matter Is Captured

Particulate matter is one of the major concerns associated with diesel exhaust.

A particulate filtration stage can physically capture soot and other solid particles from the exhaust stream.

As the exhaust passes through the filter structure, gases continue through while particulate material is retained within the filtration media.

Over time, accumulated material has to be managed.

Depending on the RECD technology, regeneration or another cleaning process may be used to prevent excessive accumulation.

This is why an RECD should not be viewed as a completely passive component that can simply be installed and forgotten.

Step 5: Sensors Can Monitor System Condition

Modern RECD systems may incorporate sensors and a controller to monitor operating conditions.

Depending on the system design, sensors can monitor parameters such as:

Exhaust temperature
Differential pressure
Filter condition
Backpressure
Regeneration requirements
System alarms

These measurements help operators identify abnormal conditions.

For example, increasing differential pressure across a particulate filter can indicate that the filter is becoming heavily loaded.

Early detection gives the maintenance team an opportunity to investigate the condition before excessive exhaust restriction develops.

Why Exhaust Backpressure Matters

One of the most important technical considerations during RECD installation is exhaust backpressure.

Every diesel engine has an acceptable exhaust-backpressure range. Adding an emission-control device introduces additional resistance into the exhaust system.

A correctly engineered RECD should therefore be selected and installed so that the resulting backpressure remains within the engine manufacturer's permissible limits.

This is also why exhaust-pipe diameter, bends, silencer arrangement and overall routing should be considered during installation.

A device that performs well in a laboratory but is poorly integrated into the actual DG set exhaust system may create operational problems.

Does an RECD Modify the Engine?

Generally, an RECD is installed on the exhaust side rather than modifying the engine's internal components.

The engine continues to perform the combustion process as before, while the exhaust-treatment equipment processes the gases after they leave the engine.

This makes retrofit emission control particularly relevant for businesses that have existing generators with useful remaining service life.

However, retrofit suitability should always be confirmed through technical assessment. Generator capacity, engine condition, exhaust configuration, operating load and applicable regulatory requirements all need to be considered.

RECD Installation Requires More Than Mounting the Device

A successful installation involves more than placing an emission-control unit on the exhaust pipe.

The installation team may need to evaluate:

Available installation space
Exhaust pipe dimensions
Existing silencer arrangement
Exhaust routing
Structural support
Service access
Generator load pattern
Electrical requirements for the controller, where applicable
Sensor installation
Backpressure measurement
Safe operating temperature

For enclosed or soundproof DG sets, available space can be an additional consideration because the emission-control equipment needs to be integrated with the existing enclosure and exhaust arrangement.

What Happens During Low-Load Operation?

Generator load can have a significant influence on exhaust conditions.

A DG set operating continuously at a very light load may not produce the same exhaust temperatures as one operating at a higher and more stable load.

This matters particularly for systems where regeneration depends partly on exhaust temperature.

If particulate accumulation increases faster than it can be cleared, filter loading and backpressure may eventually become concerns.

RECD Maintenance Is Part of the System

Installing an RECD does not eliminate the need for maintenance.

The emission-control equipment should be inspected according to the manufacturer's recommended schedule.

Depending on the technology, maintenance may include checking:

Filter condition
Catalyst condition
Sensors
Exhaust connections
Differential pressure
Temperature readings
Regeneration performance
Physical damage
Backpressure

How Should Buyers Evaluate an RECD?

A buyer should avoid selecting an emission-control system based solely on its advertised emission-reduction percentage.

A more complete technical evaluation should include:

Generator compatibility:

Does the system match the engine model and generator capacity?

Exhaust compatibility:

Can the device be integrated with the existing exhaust system without exceeding permissible backpressure?

Certification:

Does the supplier provide appropriate testing and approval documentation?

Installation:

Who will handle fabrication, mounting, sensors, electrical connections and commissioning?

Maintenance:

What servicing or filter-cleaning requirements apply?

Documentation:

Will the supplier provide the necessary technical and testing records?

After-sales support:

Who will respond if backpressure, sensor or regeneration problems occur?

Verify Regulatory Information From Official Sources

RECD selection should always be considered alongside the regulatory requirements applicable to the particular generator and location.

Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)The provides official environmental information and regulatory material relevant to generator sets and emission control.

Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC)The is another important official source for environmental notifications, policies and regulatory updates.

Businesses should use official documentation to verify requirements rather than relying entirely on informal descriptions such as “CPCB approved” or “CPCB compliant” appearing in a commercial quotation.

RECD vs Generator Replacement

For an older generator, there are generally several possible approaches when emission requirements become a concern.

One option may be replacing the complete generator with a newer compliant unit.

Another may be evaluating an appropriate retrofit emission-control system for the existing equipment, where permitted and technically suitable.

The better choice depends on generator condition, remaining service life, operating hours, regulatory requirements, capital budget and expected future usage.

For a generator that remains mechanically sound, retrofit can be worth evaluating because it addresses the exhaust side without requiring complete replacement of the power-generation system.

Final Thoughts

An RECD works by treating diesel exhaust after it leaves the engine and before it reaches the atmosphere. Depending on the technology, the system can combine catalytic treatment, particulate filtration, sensors, monitoring and regeneration mechanisms.

However, good emission-control performance depends on more than the device itself.

Correct sizing, suitable installation, acceptable exhaust backpressure, appropriate operating conditions, regular maintenance and reliable documentation all contribute to the overall result.
