Diesel generator sets are widely used for backup and continuous power in industries, offices, hospitals, commercial buildings, construction sites, and other facilities. However, diesel combustion produces exhaust gases containing pollutants that need to be properly managed.

A Retrofit Emission Control Device (RECD) is designed to help control targeted pollutants from an existing diesel generator. By integrating suitable emission-control technology into the exhaust system, an RECD can support better management of generator emissions without necessarily replacing the complete DG set.

What Is an RECD for DG Set?

RECD stands for Retrofit Emission Control Device. It is an emission-control system designed to be fitted to an existing diesel generator's exhaust system, provided the equipment is technically compatible.

During generator operation, exhaust gases travel through the exhaust line and pass through the RECD. Depending on the technology used, the device can capture, filter, or otherwise treat specific pollutants before the exhaust is discharged.

The actual performance of an RECD depends on its technology, generator specifications, operating conditions, installation quality, and maintenance.

How Does RECD Help Control Emissions?

The basic purpose of an RECD is to treat targeted pollutants in diesel exhaust before they are released into the surrounding environment.

The process generally works as follows:

Fuel combustion: The diesel engine burns fuel to produce mechanical energy.
Exhaust generation: Combustion produces exhaust gases containing various pollutants.
Exhaust movement: These gases move through the DG set's exhaust piping.
Emission treatment: The exhaust passes through the RECD, where the selected technology acts on targeted pollutants.
Treated exhaust: The processed exhaust then exits through the exhaust outlet.

Different emission-control technologies work differently, so the exact treatment process depends on the RECD system selected for the generator.

How Does an RECD Device for Diesel Generator Work?

RECD device for diesel generatorAn is installed as part of the exhaust arrangement. Its design must be matched to important parameters such as engine capacity, exhaust gas flow, temperature, and allowable back pressure.

Depending on the system, emission control may involve filtration, catalytic treatment, or another technical mechanism designed for specific pollutants.

For this reason, an RECD should not be selected only by looking at the generator's kVA rating. A proper technical evaluation is important before installation.

Which Emissions Can RECD Control?

The pollutants controlled by an RECD depend on the specific technology used.

Some retrofit systems are primarily designed to control particulate matter, while other technologies may target additional pollutants. Therefore, users should check the manufacturer's technical specifications rather than assuming that every RECD controls all types of diesel emissions.

Emission-control performance can also vary according to engine condition, load, exhaust temperature, fuel characteristics, and maintenance.

Benefits of Using RECD for DG Sets

1. Helps Reduce Targeted Pollutants

The primary benefit of an RECD is its ability to help control specific pollutants from diesel generator exhaust.

2. Supports Environmental Management

Reducing targeted exhaust pollutants can support better environmental management at facilities where diesel generators operate frequently.

3. Can Be Considered for Existing DG Sets

Retrofit technology provides an option for suitable existing generators. Where technically and legally appropriate, an RECD may be considered instead of replacing the complete generator.

4. Supports Applicable Compliance Requirements

CPCB guidelines for RECDFollowing the and other applicable regulatory requirements can help users make informed decisions about emission-control systems.

Requirements can depend on the DG-set category, capacity, location, and other conditions. Users should always verify the latest requirements applicable to their specific installation.

Factors That Affect RECD Performance

Installing an RECD alone does not guarantee the same performance in every application. Several factors can influence its operation.

Engine Condition

A properly maintained engine generally provides more predictable exhaust conditions. Engine faults should be corrected rather than relying on the RECD to compensate for poor engine operation.

Generator Load

The operating load can influence exhaust temperature and gas flow, which may affect the performance of certain emission-control technologies.

Exhaust Temperature

Some technologies require specific temperature conditions to operate effectively.

Exhaust Gas Flow

The RECD should be appropriately sized for the generator's exhaust flow.

Back Pressure

The retrofit installation must remain within suitable exhaust back-pressure limits recommended for the engine.

Maintenance

Both the generator and RECD require appropriate inspection and maintenance. Neglecting maintenance can affect system performance.

RECD Installation Requirements

Before installing an RECD, a technical assessment should be carried out. Important considerations include:

DG-set capacity
Engine make and model
Exhaust pipe configuration
Exhaust gas flow
Exhaust temperature
Back-pressure limits
Available installation space
Operating load and duty cycle
Electrical or control requirements, where applicable
Manufacturer's installation instructions

Professional installation can help ensure that the system is integrated correctly with the existing exhaust arrangement.

Does RECD Replace Regular DG Maintenance?

No. RECD is an additional emission-control measure and does not replace regular generator servicing.

The engine should continue to receive routine maintenance, including checks of the fuel system, lubricating system, cooling system, filters, battery, exhaust system, and other important components.

The RECD should also be inspected and maintained according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Keeping the DG set in good operating condition is important because engine problems can increase abnormal emissions and affect the overall performance of an emission-control system.

CPCB Guidelines and RECD Compliance

When selecting an emission-control system, users should review the applicable regulatory requirements and technical conditions for their DG set.

CPCB guidelines for RECDThe should be considered along with the specific requirements applicable to the generator, installation, and operating environment.

Users should also review available technical documentation and any applicable certifications or approvals where required. It is important to verify current requirements instead of relying only on older information or generic claims.

FAQs About RECD for DG Set

1. Does RECD completely eliminate DG-set emissions?

No. RECD systems are designed to control specific pollutants. They do not mean that all emissions from a diesel generator are eliminated.

2. Can RECD be installed on an old diesel generator?

A retrofit system can be considered for an existing DG set if the system is technically compatible and meets applicable requirements.

3. What determines the performance of an RECD?

Performance can depend on the RECD technology, engine condition, exhaust temperature, exhaust flow, generator load, installation, and maintenance.

4. Is every RECD suitable for every DG set?

No. RECD selection should be based on the generator's technical specifications and the requirements of the particular application.

5. Does an RECD replace engine maintenance?

No. Regular DG-set maintenance remains necessary. An emission-control device cannot replace proper engine servicing.

6. What should I check before purchasing an RECD?

Check the DG-set capacity, engine make and model, exhaust conditions, back-pressure requirements, technical compatibility, documentation, maintenance requirements, and applicable regulatory provisions.

Conclusion

RECD for DG Set can help control targeted pollutants by treating diesel exhaust before it is released into the atmosphere. The system works as part of the generator's exhaust arrangement and can provide an emission-control option for suitable existing DG sets.
