Diesel generator sets are an important source of backup power for offices, factories, hospitals, commercial buildings, data facilities, institutions, and other establishments. However, diesel combustion produces exhaust emissions, making emission management an important part of responsible DG-set operation.

Retrofit Emission Control Device (RECD)A can be used on suitable existing diesel generator engines as part of an emission-control strategy. Its relationship with CPCB requirements is important because DG-set owners need to understand both the technical function of the device and the regulatory requirements applicable to their particular equipment.

What Are CPCB Emission Requirements?

Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB)The is India's central environmental pollution-control authority. It develops standards, procedures, technical requirements, and other pollution-control measures in coordination with applicable laws and regulatory authorities.

DG-set requirements are not necessarily identical for every generator. Different factors can affect which requirements apply, including engine capacity, manufacturing period, engine specifications, and the relevant regulatory framework.

Therefore, DG-set owners should identify the requirements applicable to their own equipment rather than assuming that one rule or one retrofit solution applies to every generator.

What Is the Purpose of RECD?

RECD stands for Retrofit Emission Control Device. It is designed to be fitted to an existing DG engine to control emissions through the exhaust system.

Instead of replacing the complete generator, an appropriate retrofit system can be installed on an eligible existing engine.

This approach can be particularly relevant for organizations that already have functioning DG sets and need to evaluate emission-control options.

How Does RECD Help With Emission Control?

A diesel engine produces exhaust gases during combustion. These gases travel through the engine's exhaust system.

An RECD is installed in this exhaust pathway. The device uses its specific emission-control technology to treat targeted pollutants before the exhaust is released.

The effectiveness of the system depends on the device technology, engine characteristics, exhaust conditions, operating load, installation quality, and maintenance.

CPCB's published RECD procedure establishes certification and type-approval requirements around specific engine families and technical characteristics, rather than treating every DG engine as interchangeable.

Why Is Engine Compatibility Important?

Engine compatibility is one of the most important considerations when selecting an RECD.

For example, two generators may have similar kVA ratings but different engines, exhaust characteristics, or operating conditions. A device suitable for one application may not automatically be suitable for another.

CPCB's RECD procedure specifically discusses RECD families and their applicability to particular certified engine families.

Therefore, buyers should provide the supplier with accurate DG-set information before selecting equipment.

Can RECD Alone Guarantee CPCB Compliance?

It is better to avoid viewing compliance as simply “installing an RECD.”

Compliance involves the complete regulatory and technical situation. The applicable requirement should first be identified. Then the DG set and proposed emission-control equipment should be evaluated against that requirement.

The engine should also be maintained properly.

An emission-control device cannot compensate for every mechanical problem. Poor combustion, damaged injectors, blocked air filters, poor fuel quality, excessive oil consumption, or other faults can affect emissions.

What Information Should DG Owners Collect?

Before selecting an RECD, organizations should collect:

Generator capacity
Engine manufacturer
Engine model
Engine family information
Manufacturing details
Fuel details
Exhaust-pipe information
Typical operating load
Existing emission-control equipment
Generator maintenance history

This information helps suppliers and technical teams evaluate the correct retrofit option.

What Does the CPCB RECD List Show?

CPCB publishes a list of manufacturers certified for RECDs applicable to diesel genset engines up to 800 kW, with different applicability ranges for different engine categories. The published list also identifies certification agencies associated with listed RECD applications.

This is useful for organizations researching retrofit solutions because it demonstrates why the specific engine range and certification applicability should be checked rather than selecting an RECD solely on price.

Why Is Installation Important?

An RECD becomes part of the generator's exhaust system. Installation therefore needs to account for exhaust flow, temperature, back pressure, mounting, physical space, and maintenance access.

Incorrect installation can create operational problems and may affect the performance of the emission-control system.

A qualified technical team should evaluate the installation before the generator is returned to normal operation.

What About DG-Set Maintenance?

Maintenance remains essential after RECD installation.

A typical maintenance program can include:

Air-filter cleaning or replacement
Fuel-filter inspection
Injector inspection
Engine-oil checks
Cooling-system inspection
Battery checks
Exhaust-system inspection
RECD inspection
Generator performance monitoring

The exact maintenance schedule should follow the generator and RECD manufacturer's recommendations.

What Should Businesses Do to Support Compliance?

Businesses operating DG sets should maintain proper technical documentation and records.

Depending on applicable requirements, useful records may include:

DG-set details
Engine information
RECD specifications
Installation records
Maintenance records
Testing or inspection records
Relevant certification documents

Keeping organized records can make it easier to demonstrate how the equipment is being managed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does RECD automatically make every DG set CPCB compliant?

No. Applicability depends on the specific engine, device, regulatory requirements, and installation.

Why does engine model matter?

RECD certification and applicability can be linked to specific engine families and technical characteristics.

Can an old DG set use RECD?

A suitable existing DG engine may be eligible for retrofit, subject to technical and regulatory applicability.

Is maintenance required after installation?

Yes. Both the generator and emission-control system require appropriate maintenance.

Conclusion

RECD can support emission management for suitable diesel generators, but it should be considered as part of a complete technical and regulatory approach. DG-set owners should identify applicable CPCB requirements, verify RECD compatibility, review certification information, ensure proper installation, and maintain the generator correctly.

CPCB's published documentation and certified-device information should be checked for the latest applicable requirements before making a compliance decision.
