generator loadTesting a Retrofit Emission Control Device (RECD) on a diesel generator set is not simply about installing the equipment and measuring emissions. The operating condition of the generator during testing can have a significant influence on the results. Among the most important factors is .

A DG set behaves differently at different load levels. Exhaust temperature, fuel consumption, combustion characteristics, exhaust flow and particulate formation can all change as the generator moves from low load to higher load. Because an RECD works within the exhaust system, these operating changes can directly affect how its performance is measured.

For buyers, manufacturers and testing teams, understanding the relationship between generator loading and RECD performance can help ensure that comparison results are meaningful and technically consistent.

Why Generator Load Matters During RECD Testing

A diesel generator does not produce identical exhaust conditions at every operating point. When the electrical load increases, the engine generally burns more fuel and produces a different quantity and temperature of exhaust gas.

These changes can influence parameters such as particulate matter (PM), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC), nitrogen oxides (NOx), exhaust temperature and backpressure.

An RECD is designed to operate with the exhaust characteristics of a particular engine and application. Therefore, testing the same system at significantly different load conditions can produce different measurements.

This is why a proper comparison should maintain consistent operating conditions wherever the test procedure requires them.

Comparing the Generator Before and After RECD Installation

One of the most useful approaches to evaluating an RECD is comparing the DG set's emissions before and after the retrofit.

For such a comparison to be meaningful, the generator should operate under comparable conditions during both measurements. If the baseline test is performed at one load and the post-installation test is performed at another, changes in emissions may not be caused entirely by the RECD.

For example, a reduction in particulate emissions observed after installation should be interpreted carefully if the generator was operating at a substantially different load during the second measurement.

Keeping important operating parameters consistent helps make the comparison more reliable.

Load Can Influence Exhaust Temperature

Exhaust temperature is particularly important for emission-control systems. Generator loading can influence the temperature available at the exhaust inlet, which can affect the operating behaviour of particulate reduction systems.

This demonstrates why testing cannot be viewed independently from the operating condition of the engine.

Importance of Consistent Test Conditions

A good RECD comparison should document the major operating parameters associated with the test. Depending on the applicable procedure, this may include generator load, engine speed, exhaust temperature, fuel condition, operating duration and measured emissions.

When the baseline and retrofit measurements are conducted under comparable conditions, the resulting data becomes easier to evaluate.

For industries procuring an RECD, this is also important when reviewing supplier test reports. Buyers should ask whether the reported results were obtained under clearly defined and comparable operating conditions.

Low-Load Operation Requires Attention

Diesel generators may spend considerable operating time at relatively low loads in some applications. Low-load operation can produce exhaust conditions that differ considerably from those at higher loads.

For an RECD evaluation, this means the intended application of the DG set should be considered. A system that performs well under one operating condition should not automatically be assumed to deliver identical results under every possible operating condition.

Testing and technical evaluation should therefore reflect the expected operating profile of the generator wherever practical.

Load Matching Helps Make Supplier Comparisons Fairer

Suppose two RECD systems are being compared for the same DG set. If one system is tested under one load condition and the other under a different condition, directly comparing their emission reduction percentages can be misleading.

A fair comparison requires the relevant test parameters to be controlled as consistently as possible.

why generator load must be matched during RECD comparison testsThis becomes particularly important during procurement because technical teams may use test results to compare different RECD solutions. Understanding can help buyers ask better questions and evaluate supplier documentation more effectively.

What Buyers Should Ask RECD Suppliers

Before finalising an RECD supplier, buyers can ask for details about the conditions under which the performance data was generated. Useful questions include:

At what generator load was the RECD tested?
Were baseline and retrofit tests conducted at comparable loads?
What exhaust temperature was recorded?
Which emission parameters were measured?
Which test cycle or procedure was followed?
Was the generator operating under stable conditions?
Are the test results supported by an authorised testing or certification process?

These questions can provide greater clarity than simply comparing a headline emission-reduction percentage.

Documentation Is as Important as the Test Result

A reliable RECD evaluation should be supported by appropriate documentation. Test reports should clearly identify the equipment, operating conditions, measurement parameters and applicable test methodology.

Conclusion

Generator load is an important consideration when evaluating RECD performance because changes in load can influence engine operation, exhaust temperature, exhaust flow and emissions. For meaningful before-and-after comparisons, relevant operating conditions should be kept consistent and properly documented.

For DG set owners and procurement teams, understanding load conditions can make RECD evaluation more transparent and help avoid misleading comparisons. Instead of looking only at an emission-reduction figure, buyers should examine the complete testing conditions, methodology and supporting documentation.
