The 'twice a year' rule doesn't fit every Brooklyn block

Most general home maintenance advice tells you to clean your gutters in spring and fall and call it done. That works reasonably well in a suburb with a lawn and a few scattered trees. It works a lot less well on a block in Bed-Stuy or Prospect Heights lined with mature London planetrees, or on a row house in Cypress Hills shaded by a neighbor's overgrown maple. The honest answer to how often you should clean your gutters is: it depends on what's hanging over your roof and what kind of roof you have.

Street trees change everything

Brooklyn's older, tree-lined streets are one of the borough's nicer features and one of the more annoying ones if you own the roof underneath. Sycamores, oaks, and gingkoes drop leaves over an extended window from late September through December, and many sheds seeds, pods, or catkins earlier in the year too. A house tucked under heavy canopy can see gutters fill up two or three times between October and the first hard freeze, not once.

If your gutters are visibly shaded by tree limbs for more than a few hours a day, plan on checking them monthly from September through December, even if you only need a full cleaning every six to eight weeks. A quick visual check from the ground, or a look from a second-story window, tells you whether leaves and grit have built up enough to block flow at the downspout opening.

Flat roofs need a different rhythm

A lot of Brooklyn's rowhouses and small multifamily buildings have flat or low-slope roofs with scuppers or internal drains instead of (or in addition to) perimeter gutters. These systems clog differently. Granules from the roofing membrane, windblown debris, and standing dirt collect right at the drain opening, and a clog there doesn't just overflow a gutter, it can pond water directly on the roof deck. Flat-roof drainage should get inspected at least twice a year regardless of tree cover, with an extra check after any storm that dumps a lot of debris at once.

Signs you're overdue, regardless of the calendar

Rather than relying purely on a schedule, watch for these indicators: water sheeting over the gutter edge during moderate rain instead of running through the downspout, visible plant growth or dark staining in the trough, sagging sections where water is pooling instead of draining, or staining on the fascia board below the gutter line. Any of these means debris has already built up enough to interfere with flow, and the cleaning is overdue rather than upcoming.

A realistic schedule for most Brooklyn properties

For a typical attached or semi-attached house with some nearby street trees, two cleanings a year, late spring and late fall, covers most situations. Add a mid-season check in late summer if last year's hurricane season dropped a lot of leaf litter early. For heavily shaded properties, add a third cleaning in early winter after leaf drop finishes but before the first freeze, since wet leaves left in a gutter over winter contribute directly to ice dam formation along the roof edge.

Landlords and owners of multi-unit buildings should treat this as a line item on a recurring maintenance calendar rather than something to remember on their own, since a missed cleaning on a building with several roof drainage points creates more risk, not less, than on a single-family home.

Why timing before winter matters most

Gutter Cleaning in BrooklynOf all the cleanings on the calendar, the one that matters most for a Brooklyn winter is the late-fall pass that comes after most leaves have dropped but before sustained freezing weather arrives. Scheduling during that window clears the troughs and downspouts right before the season when clogs turn into ice dams and overflow freezes against the fascia. Waiting until after the first freeze to deal with a clogged gutter often means the blockage is frozen solid and harder to clear without damaging the gutter itself.

When to stop guessing

If you've gone more than a year without checking your gutters, or you're not sure what condition they're in, a quick inspection is worth more than guessing at a schedule. Grit buildup, sagging hangers, and small leaks are often invisible from the ground but easy to spot up close, and catching them early is far cheaper than dealing with water damage to fascia, soffit, or the foundation later.
