Telecom infrastructure depends heavily on reliable backup power. From remote tower sites to large switching centres and network hubs, diesel generator sets continue to provide essential power when the grid is unavailable. However, managing emissions becomes more challenging when these generators operate at remote or unattended locations.

Unlike a conventional industrial facility, a telecom site may have limited technician visits and little day-to-day supervision. This makes remote monitoring, suitable operating conditions, maintenance planning and reliable emission-control equipment particularly important. A Retrofit Emission Control Device (RECD) can be considered as part of a broader strategy for managing emissions from applicable DG sets.

Why Telecom Sites Have Different Emission Challenges

Telecom DG sets do not always operate in the same way as generators used in factories or commercial buildings. Some sets may run only during extended power interruptions, while others operate periodically for battery charging or scheduled testing.

Remote sites can also have limited physical space, difficult access and longer intervals between maintenance visits. As a result, an emission-control solution needs to be considered alongside the actual DG operating pattern.

Before selecting an RECD, telecom operators should examine the generator's rated capacity, average load, typical runtime, exhaust arrangement and maintenance history.

Understand the DG Set Operating Pattern

One of the most important steps is understanding how the generator actually operates.

A DG set that frequently operates at a reasonable load may provide different exhaust conditions from an oversized generator that spends most of its operating hours at very light load. Load, exhaust temperature and operating duration can influence the behaviour of exhaust after-treatment equipment.

For this reason, telecom operators should review available monitoring data before finalising an RECD project. Useful information includes:

Average DG load
Number of starts per month
Typical operating duration
Frequency of power failures
Scheduled exercise runs
Fuel consumption
Exhaust temperature, where available
Existing engine alarms and service records

This information gives the supplier a more realistic picture of the application.

Remote Monitoring Is Especially Important

At an attended industrial facility, an operator may notice an unusual alarm or abnormal generator behaviour during a routine inspection. At an unattended telecom site, that same warning may remain unnoticed for days.

This makes remote alarm communication an important consideration.

An RECD installation can be evaluated not only on the physical device but also on how its operational information reaches the responsible team. Depending on the system, relevant parameters and alarms may be made available through remote monitoring arrangements.

A practical setup should establish:

Which parameters are monitored?
Where are alarms displayed?
Who receives critical alerts?
What action should follow each alarm?
When should a technician be dispatched?

The objective is simple: an alarm generated at a remote tower should eventually reach a person who can take appropriate action.

Plan Maintenance Around Existing Site Visits

Remote telecom sites often use scheduled preventive-maintenance visits. Instead of creating an entirely separate maintenance routine, RECD inspection requirements can be incorporated into the existing field-service checklist.

Technicians can be trained to check items such as mounting condition, connections, visible leakage or soot, sensor condition and displayed operating parameters, according to the equipment manufacturer's instructions.

Maintaining proper service records is equally important. Digital records can help operators identify trends across multiple sites and determine whether a particular DG set requires further investigation.

Check the Existing Exhaust Arrangement

Space can be a significant challenge at telecom installations. Small shelters, rooftop locations and compact DG enclosures may leave limited room for additional exhaust equipment.

Before installation, the project team should review:

Exhaust pipe diameter
Available installation space
Exhaust routing
Structural support
Back-pressure limitations
Access for maintenance
Hot-surface clearances
Exhaust outlet location

A site survey can help identify these issues before equipment is ordered. This can reduce installation modifications and unexpected downtime.

Consider Applicable Regulatory Requirements

Emission-control requirements for DG sets can depend on factors such as generator capacity, location, applicable regulations and current directions issued by relevant authorities.

CPCB RECD emission compliance procedure Central Pollution Control BoardThe provides the official framework for emission-compliance testing of retrofit emission control devices for diesel power-generating set engines up to 800 kW.

Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) CAQMFor telecom infrastructure located in Delhi-NCR, operators should also review the latest information from the, because DG-set-related requirements and air-quality measures can change over time. CAQM's current portal publishes its latest directions, orders and GRAP-related updates.

Therefore, operators should verify the applicable requirements for each site instead of applying one compliance assumption across an entire telecom portfolio.

Security and Unattended Operation Matter

Remote sites may face additional risks involving unauthorised access, tampering or equipment damage. An RECD installation should therefore be considered as part of the site's overall security arrangement.

Physical protection, suitable enclosures, asset identification and alarm integration can help operators detect unusual activity. Any unexplained loss of communication with an important device should also be investigated promptly.

Develop a Site-by-Site RECD Strategy

Telecom companies may manage hundreds or thousands of DG sets, but not every site necessarily has identical requirements.

A practical rollout can begin by categorising sites according to DG capacity, operating pattern, location, accessibility and regulatory requirements. Operators can then conduct pilot installations at representative sites before standardising the solution across a larger fleet.

Conclusion

Improving DG set emission management at telecom sites requires more than simply installing an emission-control device. The success of an RECD project depends on selecting suitable DG sets, understanding their operating conditions, maintaining proper exhaust arrangements and ensuring that important alarms and operating information can be monitored remotely.

For unattended locations, maintenance planning and site security are equally important. By combining appropriate RECD technology with reliable monitoring, structured maintenance and current regulatory information, telecom operators can build a more practical approach to managing emissions across distributed DG-set networks.
