RECD for your DG Set Choosing the correct requires careful technical evaluation. Many buyers make the mistake of selecting an emission-control device only according to the generator's kVA rating. However, several other factors can influence whether an RECD is suitable.

The engine family, power range, exhaust configuration, operating load, installation conditions, and applicable CPCB requirements should all be considered.

Why Is Correct RECD Selection Important?

An RECD is not a universal accessory that can simply be attached to any diesel generator.

CPCB's published RECD procedure describes type approval and applicability in relation to specific engine families and technical characteristics.

Therefore, correct selection is important for technical performance and regulatory suitability.

Start With the DG-Set Details

Before contacting an RECD supplier, collect the generator's technical information.

This may include:

DG-set capacity in kVA
Engine power in kW
Engine manufacturer
Engine model
Engine family
Manufacturing year
Fuel type
Rated speed
Exhaust-pipe size
Typical operating load

Having this information makes technical evaluation easier.

Why Does Engine Model Matter?

Two DG sets with similar electrical capacity may use different engines.

Their combustion characteristics, exhaust flow, temperature, and emission characteristics can therefore be different.

CPCB's RECD framework recognizes engine-family applicability, which means the device should be selected based on the relevant engine characteristics rather than only the generator's brand or kVA rating.

Why Should Power Range Be Checked?

RECD devices are associated with particular power ranges.

CPCB's published list of certified RECD manufacturers includes different applicability ranges for different devices and engine categories.

Therefore, buyers should compare the generator's actual engine power with the device's stated applicable range.

What About Exhaust Configuration?

The RECD becomes part of the exhaust system.

The existing exhaust pipe, mounting arrangement, available space, exhaust flow, and temperature should therefore be evaluated before installation.

The system should also remain within the engine manufacturer's acceptable exhaust back-pressure limits.

Why Is Operating Load Important?

DG sets do not always operate at their rated load.

A backup generator may operate for short periods and at varying loads. An industrial generator may have a different operating profile.

Load affects combustion and exhaust conditions, which can influence emission-control performance.

Therefore, the supplier should understand how the DG set is actually used.

What Should You Ask an RECD Supplier?

Before purchasing, ask for:

Technical specifications
Applicable engine range
Certification information
Installation requirements
Maintenance requirements
Warranty details
Installation support
After-sales technical support

A supplier should be able to explain why the proposed RECD is appropriate for the specific DG set.

Why Should Buyers Verify CPCB Information?

CPCB publishes official information about certified RECD manufacturers and their applicability. The published list shows that certified devices can have different power ranges and applicability categories.

Therefore, buyers should verify the current official information before purchasing.

Should Price Be the Main Factor?

Price is one consideration, but it should not be the only one.

An inexpensive device may not be suitable for a particular engine.

A buyer should compare:

Compatibility
Certification
Technical specifications
Installation requirements
Maintenance
Warranty
Support

The overall lifecycle of the equipment is more important than the initial purchase price alone.

What About Installation?

Installation should be carried out according to the device manufacturer's requirements.

The installation team should verify:

Exhaust connection
Mounting
Exhaust flow
Back pressure
Temperature
Accessibility
Safety

After installation, the generator should be checked during operation.

What About Existing Engine Problems?

Before installing an RECD, the DG set should be in proper operating condition.

If the generator has excessive black smoke, unusual exhaust, poor fuel combustion, injector problems, or other mechanical issues, these should be investigated.

An RECD should complement proper engine maintenance rather than replace it.

How Can Maintenance Improve Overall Performance?

Regular maintenance helps keep the generator operating correctly.

Important checks include:

Air filters
Fuel filters
Injectors
Engine oil
Cooling system
Turbocharger
Exhaust system
Battery

The RECD should also be maintained according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is generator kVA enough to select an RECD?

No. Engine model, engine family, power range, exhaust characteristics, and applicable requirements should also be checked.

Can the same RECD be used on different DG models?

Only where the device's certified applicability and technical characteristics support those applications.

Should I ask for certification documents?

Yes. Relevant certification and technical documentation should be reviewed.

Does a cheaper RECD provide the same result?

Price alone does not establish technical suitability or performance.

Conclusion

Choosing the right RECD requires a technical approach. DG-set capacity is only one factor. Engine family, power range, exhaust characteristics, operating conditions, certification applicability, installation, maintenance, and CPCB requirements all deserve attention.

A careful evaluation before purchase can help organizations select an emission-control solution that is technically appropriate for their generator.
